Give up Laval Rocket forward Brandon Baddock in exchange for former Ottawa Senators goalie who earned nickname The Hamburglar.

Hammond entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Senators in 2013 and made his first career NHL start against the Canadiens on Feb. 18, 2015. He earned the nickname The Hamburglar while at Bowling Green State University and became a star with the Senators during the 2014-15 season. After getting called up from the AHL’s Binghamton Senators, Hammond lost his first game against the Canadiens and then went 14-0-1 in his next 15 starts, including a nine-game winning streak. He finished that season with a 20-1-2 record, a 1.79 GAA and a .941 save percentage.

Hammond hasn’t played in the NHL since the 2017-18 season when he had one game with the Avalanche. He has a one-year, two-way contract that pays him US$750,000 in the NHL and US$200,000 in the AHL.

The Canadiens are desperate for goaltending help with Carey Price sidelined since the start of the season following off-season knee surgery and a 30-day stay in the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program for substance use and Jake Allen sidelined since suffering a lower-body injury on Jan. 12. Allen is expected to be out for another four weeks.

Without Price and Allen, Cayden Primeau has a 1-7-1 record with a 4.88 GAA and a .866 save percentage this season, while Samuel Montembeault has a 2-8-4 record with a 3.96 GAA and a .892 save percentage.

It’s a smart move by new Canadiens GM Kent Hughes because it should allow the 22-year-old Primeau to go back to the Rocket to continue his development in the AHL, while Hammond will be thrilled to get another chance to play in the NHL, not to mention a larger paycheque.

“It was very important for us,” Hughes said about acquiring another goalie during a first-intermission interview with Sportsnet Saturday afternoon when the Canadiens played the Columbus Blue Jackets at the Bell Centre. “Cayden was put in a tough situation as a young goalie on a last-place team and he did a great job trying to hold fort for us until we could bring some support in.”

Montembeault started Saturday’s game with Primeau as his backup.

In his last two starts, Primeau allowed 11 goals on 48 shots for a .771 save percentage. He was pulled just over five minutes into the second period of Thursday night’s 5-2 loss to the Washington Capitals after allowing four goals on 14 shots. In 16 games with the Rocket this season, Primeau had a 2.77 GAA with two shutouts and a .912 save percentage.

Baddock, 26, played 33 games with the Rocket this season, posting 3-4-7 totals and 77 penalty minutes. He also played one game with the Canadiens, his first in the NHL.

The New Jersey Devils selected Baddock in the sixth round (161st overall) of the 2014 NHL Draft and he signed with the Canadiens as a free agent on Oct. 9, 2020.
