The Oilers dominated the game, with 26 Grade A shots compared to just nine for Vancouver overall ( running count ), but the result was in doubt until Darnell Nurse made perhaps the most thrilling rush of his career, setting up Connor McDavid for the winning goal.

Edmonton fought back from 0-2 to win this game, looking more like the Oilers that started the year as the NHL’s best team.

Connor McDavid, 9. He made major contributions to 14 Grade A shots. Brilliant winning goal on a hard-nosed, hard-driving play. The kind of goal a captain scores. He came out this game flying, rushing up ice, cutting inside and setting up Yamamoto on a slot one-timer. He made another great pass, a cross ice dart, to Yamo, who zinged it off the post in the second. His lost battle on the power play kicked off the Sequence of Pain on Vancouver’s short-handed goal, this coming a moment after J.T. Miller took away a goal from him with a great block. Then another mistake — McD’s turnover sent in Tyler Motte on the shortie breakaway, but Koskinen thwarted the attempt. In OT, he was in on a number of Grade A shots before he charged up ice beside Nurse and got his stick on the big d-man’s centering pass.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, 7. He made a great power play feed to McD on the power play late in the second, but Miller took away that goal. His cross crease dart set up Draisaitl’s tying goal. He cranked it up as game went along and got off a nasty slot shot in OT.  A moment later he sent in Duncan Keith on a breakaway. His check on J.T. Miller in OT kicked off the sequence leading to McD’s winning goal. He made major contributions to six Grade A shots.

Kailer Yamamoto, 7. He was dangerous all game, with five Grade A shots but failed to score. Brilliant tip off a Ceci shot early in the game, then got the early one-timer. He tipped two Grade A chances on net in the first, then tipped one off the crossbar in the second. He lost the handle on a late second period breakaway. Got one more great shot late in the third off a Bouchard rebound.

Leon Draisaitl, 8. His game just kept better, culminating in an overtime for the ages, where he made six major contributions to Grade A shots. In total, he contributed to 15 Grade A shots. Brilliant! He had a few iffy moments in the first on defence, deked in the slot on one play that ended in a Grade A Vancouver shot, then wandering and covering no one on Nils Hoglander’s dangerous slot tip. His matador defence was again on evidence when he flew by Brock Boeser in the slot in the second, allowing a wicked one-timer. He charged down the ice and got off a good shot late in the second, Edmonton’s last good moment before quickly going behind 2-zilch. He came alive on the power play half-way through the third, firing off two Grade A shots before unleashing his lashing and lethal one-timer, the Executioner’s Shot, just after the power play ended to tie the game at 2-2. That alone rates his game as a good one,  but then he made a spectacular end-to-end rush ending with a break in and shot off the post in OT. A moment later he set up RNH on a great rush and shot. A moment after that, McD set him up for a 5 alarm slot shot. A few seconds later McD made a clever Magic Johnson to Michael Cooper backhand and backdoor pass that Drai almost jammed into the Vancouver net.

Jesse Puljujarvi, 7. He played 21:53, showing how far he’s come on this team. He battled hard on the attack, gave up little on defence. Was in on the Virtuous Cycle leading to Drai’s game-tying goal, winning the puck behind the net.

Warren Foegele, 6. Battled hard and jammed a few near crease shots on net in the first. A few defensive lapses.

Ryan McLeod, 6. He played just 9:26. He got the Oilers back into it when his nothing much shot found a hole and went in. But he put it on net and scored, a huge moment for the Oilers. He won six out of eight faceoffs.

Zack Kassian, 5. He played just 11:38, most of them quiet minutes. But he set up McLeod for a dangerous slot opportunity in the first, then followed the blocked shot for a Grade A jam of his own.

Brendan Perlini, 4. He played just 9:31 uneventful minutes.

Derek Ryan, 5. He played just 8:34 uneventful minutes, but he did help on the late PK. He won all four of his faceoffs. Not one of the fourth line had a shot on net.

Colton Sceviour, 5. He played just 9:20 uneventful minutes, but also helped on the late PK.

Devin Shore, 5. He played just 9:20 uneventful minutes, and was also out for late PK.

Darnell Nurse, 8. Not a perfect night but he made up for a lot when he went full Edmonton Express, rushing the puck up ice like the second coming of Eddie Shore and setting up McD’s winning goal. He won a battle and stretched a pass to kick off a Grade A sequence in the second. He smoked Quinn Hughes with a hit in the third. He got badly beat on a backhand deke by Boeser in OT but that was his only major mistakes on a Grade A shot against at even strength.

Evan Bouchard, 7. He played 26:45 this game, the most ice time of any Oilers d-man (beating Darnell Nurse out by one second). He went from power play hero to power play goat in one game, getting beat on Vancouver’s short-handed breakaway goal. But he looked good orchestrating the power play that led to Edmonton’s second goal and got off a Bouch bomb late in the game, where Yamo almost sizzled in the rebound. At even strength he kept a clean sheet on defence, with not one major mistake on a Grade A shot against.

Duncan Keith, 6. His turnover kicked off the Sequence of Pain on Vancouver’s first goal, but was otherwise pretty solid on defence and moved the puck well. He almost scored in OT on strong rush on net.

Cody Ceci, 6. He allowed the outside shot on Vancouver’s first goal and screened Kosk on the play, but was otherwise solid and had eight shots directed at net.

Kris Russell, 5. He made a great shot block on a Chiasson slapper early in the second, but paid a price, taking it on the ankle. For every beer league d-man in Edmonton, let me say: OUCH!!! His turnover led to a five bells chance by Chiasson in the third, but he was otherwise solid.

Slater Koekkoek, 4. Just 10:15 minutes, with a few major mistakes on defence.

Mikko Koskinen, 8. Huge saves at the right moment. Came up big on a dangerous Nils Hoglander slot redirect in the first. He came up big again on a nasty Brock Boeser one-timer in the second. But he let in a hard outside shot by Elias Pettersson late in the second. Pettersson had no other options but to shoot on the play, and Kosk was screened by Ceci, but if he’s cut down the angle instead of staying deep in his crease, there’s no goal there. He made another huge stop early in the third on Chiasson in tight, the came up biggest of all stopping the Tyler Motte breakway with Edmonton still down a goal. If that wasn’t his save of the night it was stopping Boeser’s break-in in OT.
