Canadiens' Carey Price reveals he was treated for substance use - Montreal Gazette

“I am working through years of neglecting my own mental health which will take some time to repair; all I can do is take it day by day. With that comes some uncertainty with when I will return to play.

“I appreciate all of the overwhelming support and well wishes. I please ask that the media and our hockey community continue to respect our privacy at this time. Your support and respect of this so far has been a critical piece to my recovery.”

Price missed all of training camp while recovering from off-season knee surgery after leading the Canadiens to the Stanley Cup final and entered the player assistance program on Oct. 7.

“He’s doing good,” Canadiens head coach Dominique Ducharme said after speaking with Price Tuesday morning. “Carey was in (the Bell Sports Complex), he’s still in. It was good for me to see him and see how he’s doing and for the guys, too, to see their teammate back. We have a good group of guys and they care about each other. So having him back I think just on the personal side the guys feel pretty good about seeing him and seeing that he’s doing good.”

It remains uncertain when Price will get back on the ice. Ducharme said there will be a four-step process. The first will be getting back in shape in the gym, which should take four to five days, after which Price will go on the ice with a member of the training staff to check on his conditioning and his knee. After that, Price will work with goalie coach Éric Raymond and then he will start practising with his teammates. Ducharme said last week that Price could also play a couple of games with the AHL’s Laval Rocket before playing with the Canadiens.

“It’s not about the hockey player, it’s about the human being,” Ducharme said Monday. “To see that he’s coming back is a positive sign because he’s doing better. So that’s the most important thing. Our guys care about each other and to see a guy like him doing better, that’s positive.”

After Tuesday night’s game, which the Canadiens lost 3-2 in overtime to the Kings, defenceman Ben Chiarot was asked about Price’s statement.

“He’s the leader on our team but, to be honest, the hockey part you don’t really even care about,” Chiarot said. “You care about your friend and his family and just the well being of him and his family. Definitely a brave man to kind of come out and face his fears kind of the way he did. That’s not easy for guys to do and he did it. I’m proud to call him a friend.”

When asked if Price’s statement caught him by surprise, Chiarot said: “You know what, I’ll keep the details to Carey and what he wants to share. It’s not my story to share. So I’ll let him to be the one to answer those questions.”

Forward Tyler Toffoli said after the game that Price did speak with his teammates Tuesday morning before the statement came out.

“I haven’t read the statement yet,” Toffoli said after the game. “But talking with Pricer he knows that he has our support and what he did and the calibre of a player and a person he is for him to have the courage and step up and not only go away to seek the help but come back and talk to everybody and release a statement like that it’s extremely powerful and there’s a reason why he attracts good people and everybody wants to be around him because he’s a great human being. We all love him and support him deeply.”

Price, 34, is in the fourth season of an eight-year, US$84-million contract with an annual salary-cap hit of $10.5 million.
