Athletics’ Chris Bassitt released from hospital after being hit by line drive - Sportsnet.ca

Oakland Athletics' ace Chris Bassitt has been released from hospital but will need to have surgery on a broken bone in his face after being hit by a line drive Tuesday.

The team announced an update to Bassitt's condition early Wednesday after he had to be carted off the field in the second inning of a loss to the White Sox in Chicago.

"Chris was released from Rush University Medical Center last night. He received stitches for two facial lacerations and was diagnosed with a displaced tripod fracture in his right cheek that will require surgery," the A's statement reads. "An exam of his right eye was normal for vision and no other damage is currently noted in the eye or the orbital bone. In addition, a head CT scan revealed no further injury."

Bassitt's agency, Meister Sports Management, also released a statement thanking everyone who had reached out to the right-hander after the incident.

"Wanted to thank everyone on behalf of #MeisterSports family member Chris Bassitt for the unbelievable outpouring of love and support shown to his wife Jess, parents, family and friends," the statement reads in part. "Horrific injuries like this remind us, despite our differences baseball is a family and that we all wish nothing but health and safety to everyone who plays the game and gives us so much joy in their achievements."

Bassitt was struck by a ball off the bat of Brian Goodwin after the pitcher delivered a 89.5 m.p.h cut fastball with two on and no outs in the bottom of the second. The 32-year-old immediately fell to the ground and grabbed his face before being swarmed by medical personnel from both teams. Eventually, he was able to stand under his own power while holding a towel to his face before being taken off the field on cart.

After the game, A's manager Bob Melvin gave a statement saying that Bassitt never lost consciousness during the ordeal and that the team was confident he had avoided significant eye damage. The manager and other players did not take questions from the media.

"Bass is conscious. He was the entire time," Melvin said. "We don't think the eye is a problem at this point. It felt like it was below it. He's got some cuts. They had to do some stitches. He's in a scan and we'll know more about potential fractures or whatever tomorrow, or later tonight."

Bassitt is in the midst of a breakout season and leads the American League with 12 wins this year. He has a 3.22 ERA with 154 strikeouts in 25 starts this season.
