Maple Leafs sign Dell, shoring up hole in organization's goaltending depth - Toronto Sun

The Maple Leafs’ goaltending depth got a much-needed boost on Tuesday night.

The Leafs signed netminder Aaron Dell to a one-year, $800,000 US contract, a move that will give the club some breathing room should Frederik Andersen or Jack Campbell get injured.

In 107 career games in the National Hockey League, all with the San Jose Sharks, Dell has a record of 48-34-12 with a .908 save percentage and a 2.76 goals-against average. Last season, Dell, a native of Airdrie, Alta., was 12-15-3 in 33 games with a .907 save percentage.

Leafs assistant coach Dave Hakstol was Dell’s coach at the University of North Dakota from 2009-12.

There also has been speculation about Leafs interest in another recent Shark, unrestricted free agent centre Joe Thornton. After Auston Matthews and John Tavares at centre, the Leafs need a greater presence in the middle, as Alex Kerfoot struggled last season. A message left on Tuesday with Thornton’s agent, his brother John Thornton, was not returned.

Also on Tuesday, the Leafs learned that the arbitration case involving winger Ilya Mikheyev will be heard on Oct. 21.
