Jets’ Scheifele suffered Achilles injury, Laine a hand injury vs. Flames - Sportsnet.ca

In the wake of the Winnipeg Jets‘ Qualifying Series loss to the Calgary Flames, head coach Paul Maurice offered some insight into the injuries that derailed his team’s bid for a run at the Stanley Cup.

Mark Scheifele, who left the Jets’ 4-1 Game 1 loss to the Flames early in the first period after a collision against the boards with Matthew Tkachuk, suffered an Achilles injury. Scheifele had not played since sustaining the injury.

Maurice was careful in his description of the Scheifele’s situation, framing it as a “crushing” injury, as opposed to the cut or tear which is more traditionally associated with Achilles damage.

Patrik Laine, also sidelined since Game 1 after a collision with Flames captain Mark Giordano and winger Sam Bennett, suffered a sprained left hand.

Both saw specialists after Game 1 to further evaluate their injuries, and it was ultimately decided they were not fit to play in Games 2, 3, or 4 of the series.

Mason Appleton, the final Jets forward to have missed the majority of the series, had no apparent instigating incident for his injury. He logged 10:17 of ice time in a third-line role for the Jets in Game 1, and did not play another shift in the series due to what Maurice revealed to be a shoulder injury.

For both Laine and Appleton, their injuries would have sidelined them for two-to-three weeks, Maurice said, while additional tests would follow for Scheifele — though Maurice does not believe the damage to be long-term at this time.
