Theodore’s long bomb found Nicolas Roy in the high slot and his back pass found an open Alex Tuch, who wired home his sixth goal of the playoffs on Jacob Markstrom to narrow the count to 2-1. It was followed by a phantom delay-of-game call on Boeser for flipping a puck that hit the top of the glass.
The Golden Knights didn’t score on the power play, but gained momentum and forced Markstrom to make a series of saves as they held a 21-7 shot advantage in the second period.
“We needed to play better and it was huge to get Toff back and score early, and it’s great for our confidence,” said Markstrom, who had a 38-save night. “When we got the puck out of our zone, they come right back at you with skilled guys who like to play fast. Everybody believed in what we did today, but we know the next game is going to be tough and we have to come ready to play.”
Markstrom’s effort was just as impressive as sacrifices in front of him. The team set a playoff franchise record of 40 blocked shots, including six by Chris Tanev, five by Jay Beagle and four apiece by Brandon Sutter and Edler.
“That shows how unselfish we are as a team,” said Markstrom. “Everybody sticking together and doing the dirty work. It’s not fun, and you see the ice bags after the game with people who blocks shots. I appreciated that and they’ve been doing it all year and through the playoffs.”
Max Pacioretty would score late in the third period before Pearson added an empty-net goal.
