Canadiens offence lets Price down as Flyers score shutout win in Game 3 - Montreal Gazette

“We generated chances,” Price said after the game. “We worked hard to get those. Their goaltender played well. You got to tip your hat to him. A hot goaltender. I thought we did all the right things to win a hockey game tonight.”

But you can’t win if you don’t score.

The Canadiens’s penalty-killers were outstanding in the first period, killing off a double-minor for high-sticking against Jesperi Kotkaniemi and an interference penalty against Jeff Petry. Kotkaniemi also rang a shot off the post at the 8:07 mark and teammate Brett Kulak blasted one off the crossbar eight seconds later.

The Canadiens’ power play got its chance in the second period when the Flyers were given three straight penalties, but there were no goals.

Kotkaniemi hit his second post of the night 35 seconds into the third period and Nick Suzuki also hit a post, but the Canadiens couldn’t put one past Hart. The Canadiens pulled Price for an extra attacker with 1:31 left, but still couldn’t put the puck in the Flyers net.

“The effort was there,” Canadiens coach Kirk Muller said. “That was a playoff game tonight. An NHL playoff game. Two real good goalies playing really well. Both teams didn’t give up much.”

The Canadiens’ Brendan Gallagher, who scored 22 goals during the regular season to tie for the team lead with Tomas Tatar, is still looking for his first goal after seven postseason games.

“It’s the style of game we expected coming in,” Gallagher said. “Obviously, they find a way to put one in our net and we were unable to beat their goaltender. They came out hard in the first period, they had a push, which we expected. After that there were chances both ways. We just didn’t do a good enough job of, I guess, outworking their goaltender and helping ours out.

“You give up one goal, you should be able to win a hockey game,” Gallagher added. “We just got to find a way to produce at the other end of the ice.”

Game 4 will be Tuesday afternoon at Scotiabank Arena (3 p.m., CBC, SN, TVA Sports, TSN 690 Radio).
