While the injury cast some doubt on his football future, it is not expected to hinder Tagovailoa’s playing ability early in his career. However, it has impacted his stock going into the draft. Once considered a clear rival to Burrow in the race to go first overall, Tagovailoa now sports +150 odds to be selected fifth overall, a pick currently held by the Miami Dolphins.
A 22-year-old who is set to enter the NFL Draft after spending four years under center with the Oregon Ducks, Herbert sits behind Tagovailoa as a +110 wager at online sports betting sites to be the second quarterback selected on Thursday night.
Herbert showed steady progress over his four years at Oregon. In addition to garnering All-American honours on two occasions, Herbert led the Ducks to their first Pac-12 conference title in five years last season, and capped his collegiate career by taking home Offensive MVP honours after powering the squad to a 28-27 win over Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl.
In addition to trailing Tagovailoa on the odds to be the second quarterback drafted, Herbert is listed as a -250 wager on the NFL odds to fall out of the top five overall picks. However, he is not expected to wait long to finally hear his name called on Thursday night, with both the Los Angeles Chargers and Jacksonville Jaguars shopping for pivots and owning picks in the top ten.
Further down the odds to be the second passer picked, Jordan Love lags at a distant +2800, while a bet on the field sports +3300 odds. Where Love will go in the draft has been a source of considerable debate. The Utah State Aggies pivot has been projected to be picked anywhere between the middle of the first and second rounds, while Tagovailoa’s Alabama teammate Jalen Hurts sports -125 odds of being selected in the second round.
