Ex-GM Mike Tannenbaum confirms rumor that Jets scout lobbied for Tom Brady in 2000 NFL Draft - SNY.tv

As everyone prepares for the 2020 NFL Draft next Thursday, SportsCenter flashed back 20 years ago to take a very specific look at the 2000 NFL Draft. And by specific, I'm talking about the sixth round with pick No. 199.

It's a pick that would haunt the Jets for two decades.

Tom Brady was selected by the Patriots out of Michigan with that pick, and we all know how that turned out. There were many chances for the other teams in the league to nab Brady before he was a late-round pick, but he was continuously passed on.

And ESPN's Rich Cimini confirmed that the Jets had quality info to believe Brady could have been worth it before New England decided to take a shot on him.

Cimini spoke to ex-Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum, who affirmed a years-long rumor. Jets scout Jesse Kaye was in love with Brady when analyzing his play, enough so that he lobbied for then-GM Dick Haley to take him in "probably 5th round."

Tannenbaum said Kaye believed Brady was "treated unfairly" during his time at Michigan. By his projections, Kaye thought Brady was going to be a "great player."

Little did he know he'd arguably turn into the greatest quarterback of all time -- and one that tormented the Jets in the AFC East for years.

Six Super Bowl rings later, Brady finally moved on from the Patriots this offseason, joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But what could've been has even more clarity 20 years later.
