John Mann, Spirit of the West Frontman, Mentor and Friend, Remembered by Alan Doyle - VOCM

As the music industry mourns the loss of John Mann, one local musician says the Spirit of The West frontman had a huge influence, not only on him, but on his former band.

Alan Doyle told the VOCM Morning Show he clearly remembers the first time he and other members of Great Big Sea met John Mann.

Doyle recalls “meeting him as a fan” back in 1992. He says His band mates from Great Big Sea made a pilgrimage to see the Spirit of the West show at the Arts and Culture Centre.

Doyle says that meeting was the first of many. Great Big Sea would go on to open for Spirit of the West and they all became friends.

“It was awesome because they were great guys and they were heroes of ours” Doyle said, recalling that tour with the band.

What impressed Doyle the most was the fact that John Mann was a “massive fan” of Newfoundland music. He says “they were amazed by how the music from our ancestors still lived so strongly here.”

“It was just a great friendship and mentorship under him” Doyle said.

John Mann died yesterday after a battle with early Alzheimer’s. He was 57.

Doyle says he was also proud to be part of a benefit for Mann held two years ago in Vancouver. Fifty musicians calling themselves Spirit of Canada gathered to record “Home For A Rest.”
