Jay Jackson, Jay Schroeder, and Jay Robertson: the Jay Blue Jays - Bluebird Banter

The Blue Jays conducted a pretty neat piece of business yesterday, re-signing reliever Jay Jackson to a major league contract after releasing him form his minor league deal earlier in the week.

Jackson, a 35-year-old veteran journeyman, twirled nine scoreless innings during spring training, fanning 13. Spring stats caveats notwithstanding it was impressive to see him throw 96 mph heaters and racking up whiffs. Jackson won’t be with Toronto to start the season but he will be anchoring the Buffalo Bisons bullpen instead, ready to step in when needed.

Minor Leaguer

When he gets called up, he will become the first “Jay” to ever play for the Toronto Blue Jays. There was Jayson Werth, Jayson Nix, and of course J.A. Happ, but Jackson will be the first guy to officially go by “Jay” to suit up for the big league club despite the many years of rumours about acquiring Jay Bruce.

Having signed a major league contract, Jackson is now on the 40-man roster on an optional assignment to triple-A. Although there hasn’t been any other “Jay”s to play for the major league Jays, two other “Jay”s have found their way onto the 40-man roster in the franchise’s 47 seasons.

RHP Jay Robertson

  • Added to 40-man roster: October 1979
  • Released: April 1982

Robertson, now 65, was the Blue Jays’ third round pick in the 1977 January Draft. In spring training 1978 he had a brief appearance in major league camp, facing Willie Stargell as his first batter (Stargell singled). He was added to the 40-man roster along with future major leaguers Paul Hodgson and Jesse Barfield after the 1979 season.

In 1980, the Toronto Star’s Alison Gordon wrote about his “off-the-wall disposition”, including how he wore a conehead around all spring training, “in the club house, out to dinner, shopping [and] for standing on the side of the road and waving at passing cars.”

“I went [to the store] with [the conehead] on, about 7:30 at night, to get some bread. WHen I got there, they were calling for security guards and everything,” Robertson told Gordon. “I bought my stuff and went back out. Then I found out the store had been robbed at 7:30 that morning.”

Back in the days where the major league Jays would play an in-season exhibition game against the triple-A Syracuse Chiefs, a pitch slipped off of Robertson’s hand and nailed Toronto’s Bob Bailor in the wrist on a 3-1 pitch, landing Bailor on the disabled list for several weeks in the middle of season.

Robertson spent five seasons in the minor league system between 1977 and 1981, making it up as far as Syracuse before a final professional season with double-A Knoxville. He is now a special assistant to Mike Rizzo, the general manager of the Washington Nationals. Last year, Robertson was awarded the Phil Rizzo Scout of the Year Award by the Nats.

OF/C Jay Schroeder

PHILADELPHIA, PA - NOVEMBER 8: Quarterback Jay Schroeder of the Washington football team looks on from the sideline during a game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Veterans Stadium on November 8, 1987 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

  • Added to 40-man roster: October 1981
  • Designated for assignment: June 1983

Football fans would know Jay Schroeder, now 61, as a quarterback who won Super Bowl XXII with the Washington NFL team, later QBing for the Los Angeles Raiders, Cincinnati Bengals, and the Arizona Cardinals. But Schroeder started his professional athletic career as a Blue Jays minor leaguer, selected third overall in the 1979 draft and given a $135,000 signing bonus. Schroeder had committed to play football for UCLA and reportedly declined a six-year three-year major league contract from the Blue Jays in order to be permitted to play for UCLA.

He struggled to hit in this four minor league seasons in the Jays system between 1980 and 1983, playing for the single-A Kinston Blue Jays. He was given his release in February 1984 when the Jays wanted him to convert to pitching. He quipped, “I want to be an athlete, not a pitcher.”

A year and a half later, the former Toronto Blue Jays prospect Schroeder would get his big break in the NFL when former Toronto Argonaut Joe Theismann had suffered a horrific career-ending big break of his right leg on a sack.

As a blond catcher, I wonder if Schroeder also played the piano.

Other “Jay”s who have played in the Blue Jays organization

These “Jay”s have played in the Blue Jays minor league system but never made it on to the 40-man roster:

  • Jay Loviglio, signed as a minor league free agent in 1984, retired after spring training
  • Jay Maldonado, signed as a non-drafted free agent in 1992
  • Jay Veniard, drafted 1995
  • Jay Gibbons, drafted 1998, selected by the Orioles in the 2000 Rule 5 Draft
  • Jay Yennaco, acquired in the 1998 Mike Stanley trade

Many thanks to Matt W for his help on this research.

Gary Bettman Ottawa: NHL commissioner discusses new arena, Senators sale | CTV News - CTV News Ottawa

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman says it will be up to the new owners of the Senators to decide whether to build a new arena at LeBreton Flats or at another location in Ottawa.

And the commissioner says he did not ask for any public dollars to help build a new arena during a meeting with Mayor Mark Sutcliffe.

"Nobody is looking for a handout," Bettman said.

Bettman held meetings with Sutcliffe, officials with the National Capital Commission and Senators staff during his visit to Ottawa on Monday, and attended the Senators game against Florida at Canadian Tire Centre. The visit comes as the process to sell the Senators enters the next phase, winnowing down the prospective buyers in the running for the club to approximately six.

During his day-long visit to Ottawa, the commissioner said it could be early to mid summer before a new owner is in place for the Senators.

"This isn't a race. This about getting it right," Bettman said.

"We're not on the clock; the goal is to get it right. If it takes a little longer, it takes a little longer," Bettman said, adding the remaining groups aiming to buy the Senators will visit Ottawa during the second phase of the sale process

In an exclusive interview with CTV News Ottawa, Bettman was asked about the possibility of building a new arena at LeBreton Flats, or at another location in Ottawa.

"Ultimately, it's going to be up to a new owner," Bettman said Monday afternoon. "LeBreton may be great, but there may or not be issues and there may be alternatives. We're not putting any building preconditions on a prospective new owner, that will be something that whoever the ultimate victor is in the process will have an opportunity to decide."

The Senators reached a memorandum of understanding with the NCC last year aimed at putting an arena at LeBreton Flats, just west of downtown Ottawa.

"Maybe it's LeBreton, which has a lot going for it, and maybe there will be other sites they'll want to look at. But that's something that will come after there's new ownership and they'll have a chance to really dig in and move forward on what they think makes sense," Bettman said, adding the NHL has not discussed the process to build a new arena with prospective owners.

Bettman also held a "social call" with Mayor Sutcliffe at city hall shortly after his arrival in Ottawa. Last week, Sutcliffe did not rule out public funding for a new Senators arena, but said he is "not a fan of putting city money into an arena."

The NHL commissioner told CTV News Ottawa he didn't "make any demands" during the meeting, and the NHL isn't asking for "any public dollars" for a new arena.

"There are things that municipalities do in terms of infrastructure … but whether it's using tax money that wouldn’t otherwise exist or whether or not it's infrastructure, those are things that will be talked about. But I don't expect the city to do anything that doesn't make sense for the city and for the people of Ottawa," Bettman said. "Again, I don't think that anybody expects that the city is going to write a cheque to the team."

The NCC says CEO Tobi Nussbaum and other officials met with Bettman to "exchange updates" on the sale of the Senators and advancing the memorandum of understanding between the NCC and Capital Sports Development for a major events centre at LeBreton Flats.

"The meeting was very positive, with both parties recognizing the value and opportunity for the Ottawa Senators and the National Hockey League to build a downtown arena at LeBreton Flats," the NCC said in a statement to CTV News Ottawa.

The NCC says the discussions also looked at "provisions which offer flexibility" for land west of downtown Ottawa.

Bettman told reporters the 6.9 acres set aside for a new arena at LeBreton Flats seems "a little small" for an arena, parking and other amenities around the area.

"Two to three months" of work remain for new ownership, commissioner says

Bettman says he's "pleased" with the significant interest in buying the Ottawa Senators.

Sports business news publication Sportico reported earlier this month that nine different groups submitted bids to buy the franchise, with some valuing the team north of $900 million U.S.

"We're talking about a very meaningful level of interest and I think that's great for the future of this franchise and it's great for the future of Ottawa," Bettman said.

"Whether it's this building or one downtown, there's somebody who's going to make a very meaningful commitment to this community, to this team, and that bodes very, very well."

Bettman tells CTV News Ottawa there's been a "first cut in terms of bidding interest", and six or more groups are still in the running to purchase the club.

"We, meaning the league, doesn't make the decision in the first instance. There's an investment banker who's running the process, we're being frequently consulted as to what's going on, occasionally weighing in, but ultimately it's up to the estate to decide what level of interest will satisfy them," Bettman said, adding the NHL Board of Governors will have to approve the purchase.

Bettman says the second phase of the sale process is more "in-person due diligence", with bidders visiting Ottawa to tour Canadian Tire Centre and meet with Senators management.

There have been several media reports about the interested groups bidding to purchase the Ottawa Senators, including celebrities.  The prospective owners include Montreal Canadiens minority owner Michael Andlauer and a consortium including actor Ryan Reynolds and Toronto-based real estate company The Remington Group, Sportico reported.

"I think it would be wisest for people to sit back, take a deep breath and let the process play out without all the speculation," Bettman said.

"The most important thing is there will be new ownership; there will be solid, strong ownership committed to Ottawa. As I've said previously, if this team moves anywhere its downtown – it's not leaving Ottawa."

Bettman told TSN 1200 there's about "two or three months" of work remaining in finalize a new owner for the Senators.

Speaking with reporters, Bettman said it could be early summer, at the earliest, before a new owner is in place.

"We believe that this phase of the process, which is being run by an investment banker (Galatioto Sports Partners), should take another six weeks," Bettman said at Canadian Tire Centre about the winnowing down of the bids.

"Hopefully, once the lawyers get their hands on doing what has to be done with whoever the successful bidder is and then we go through the league's formal approval process – I think we're some time early/mid summer to complete the process."

Sutcliffe meets with Bettman

Sutcliffe and Bettman met at the mayor's office early Monday afternoon. The two held a brief photo-op ahead of the meeting.

"I have one main request of you, which is no matter what happens, just please don't give the Stanley Cup to the Toronto Maple Leafs," Sutcliffe joked during the photo op.

"As much as I like and respect you, that doesn't work," Bettman responded. "Whoever earns it gets it."

Bettman, Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly and Sutcliffe sat together at the Senators game Monday night.

Maple Leafs, Rangers could clinch playoff spots while off Monday - TSN

The Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers could both clinch their postseason berths Monday despite having the day off.

The Maple Leafs will reach the playoffs for a seventh straight season if the Florida Panthers lose in any fashion to the Ottawa Senators Monday night.

Toronto improved their record to 44-20-9 with a 3-2 win over the Nashville Predators on Sunday. The Maple Leafs currently sit second in the Atlantic Division and are on track to have home-ice advantage in the first round against the Tampa Bay Lightning for the second straight year.

The Rangers will also be watching the Panthers closely Monday, needing a Florida loss in regulation and a loss in any fashion by the Buffalo Sabres against the Montreal Canadiens to clinch their playoff berth.

New York reached the Eastern Conference Final last season after finishing second in the Metropolitan Division. The Rangers are currently third in the Metropolitan, on track to face the New Jersey Devils in the first round.

The Boston Bruins, Carolina Hurricanes and Devils have already clinched playoffs spots, with the Bruins also having locked up the Atlantic Division.

Sam Burns routs Cam Young to win final WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play - Golf Channel

AUSTIN, Texas — The final hours of the last WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play turned into a dud for everyone but Sam Burns.

Burns went on a tear Sunday afternoon in the championship match with eight birdies on his final 10 holes and enough help from Cameron Young for a 6-and-5 victory. It was the second-largest margin in an 18-hole match in this tournament.

Burns won for the fifth time on the PGA Tour. Young, who had a late rally with clutch birdies to eliminate Rory McIlroy in the semifinals, had to settle for his sixth runner-up finish in the last 18 months.

“What a week,” Burns said. “I’m so tired.”

Burns made it to the championship match Sunday afternoon only when defending champion Scottie Scheffler missed a 4-foot birdie putt on the 20th hole of their semifinal match. Given new life, Burns made birdie from a fairway bunker with a 15-foot putt to advance.

Young had an early lead. Burns squared the match on the fifth hole and took the lead with a chip-and-putt birdie on the par-5 sixth. And then on the next hole, Young missed a 6-foot par putt to fall 2 down. It was his first bogey since the seventh hole on Thursday.

All the momentum Young had built up over the week seemed to vanish. And the silky putting stroke of Burns was never better.

He holed a 20-foot birdie putt at No. 8. He made a 12-footer on No. 10 to go 4 up. He birdied the 11th hole from 25 feet — Young made his from 20 to halve the hole — and then it ended so abruptly.

Young pulled his shot from rough into the water on the par-5 12th, and then he came up short of the green and into the water on the reachable par-4 13th.

Burns chipped to just inside 3 feet, and Young removed his cap without making him putt.

“It’s easy to think you’re so close,” Young said. “There’s one guy standing between you and winning the tournament. And that one guy is Sam Burns playing really well.”

Burns digs deep for WGC-Dell Match Play win

Burns digs deep for WGC-Dell Match Play win

The highlight was his semifinal win over McIlroy, who was in full flight for so much of the week. McIlroy was 2 up with three holes to play when Young won the 16th with a birdie and then hit a nifty pitch-and-run up the slope and his purest putt of the week.

On the first extra hole at the par-5 12th, Young was in such a bad spot in the bunker next to the lip that he could only blast out to 169 yards with McIlroy just over 200 yards for his second. Young hammered pitching wedge to 9 feet and made birdie. McIlroy played short and right of the green, chipped to just inside 9 feet and missed.

That was the kind of theater that graced Austin Country Club all week, particularly Sunday morning. Scheffler was trying to join Tiger Woods as the only back-to-back winners, and he had a 2-up lead over Burns through 10 holes.

Burns rallied back against his best friend on tour, and Scheffler had to get up-and-down from short of the 18th green for birdie to force overtime. He had it won on the second extra hole at No. 13 — except he missed the putt — and Burns escaped.

Matches and scoring from the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play Championship

Burns in the championship match was close to unbeatable.

McIlroy and Scheffler wound up in the consolation match, which McIlroy won, 2 and 1. That gave the thin crowd something to watch when Burns ended the title match early. Scheffler played four years for the Longhorns. McIlroy is popular everywhere.

And while that was going on the, the Longhorns were on TV trying to get to the Final Four.

It was a flat ending to what has been 23 dynamic events of Match Play since the World Golf Championships began in 1999. Match Play was the first one, a 38-hole final won by Jeff Maggert at La Costa. That was a nail-biter. This was a rout.

Match Play will not be on the schedule in 2024 as the PGA Tour moves toward elevated events for the top 70 or so players, a response to the threat of Saudi-funded LIV Golf.

Burns, who made 40 birdies for the week, moved to No. 10 in the world and collected $3.5 million from the $20 million purse. Young got $2.2 million for finishing second, though a trophy after so many close calls would seem to be invaluable.

Nick Suzuki poised to set a new career-high in points, despite adversity - Habs Eyes on the Prize

The Montreal Canadiens beating the Columbus Blue Jackets 8-2 on Saturday night did little to assist in their tank effort. On the contrary, it essentially guaranteed that they won’t be finishing with better odds in the Connor Bedard lottery than their opponents. But since that pursuit was a mathematical unlikelihood well before they put up eight goals, it is best not to cry over spilled milk, and look instead for positives in that stellar game for the Habs.

For instance, Nick Suzuki tied his career high in points, and stands poised to set a new personal best with nine games remaining.

That toe-drag release gave him four points on the night, assuring that his next point of any kind will officially set a new season high. A point-per-game pace over the remaining contests would see him hit 70 for the first time in his career, which may not seem like something to celebrate, until you consider the circumstances under which he’s had to operate.

It is his first year as the team’s captain, he and his teammates had started the year suggesting that they’d be better than many pundits expected. For a while that was the case, but the organization wasn’t finished rebuilding, certainly not to the extent they’d need to be in order to overcome the mountain of injuries they’d encounter.

Suzuki’s best production of the season came with Cole Caufield and Kirby Dach on his wings. Caufield, the player with whom Suzuki has incredible offensive chemistry, was of course ruled out for the season back in mid-January. Dach has also missed significant time, but on top of that, he’s been required back at centre thanks to the sheer lack of bodies that the team has experienced. Suzuki has had to operate without the luxury of an optimal lineup for the bulk of the season, and yet is on the cusp of a career-best mark.

He has 10 points in his last five games alone, mostly playing with Mike Hoffman and Rafael Harvey-Pinard as his wingers. The latter is a surprising call-up from the Laval Rocket, while the Former wasn’t expected to sniff the top line this season barring disaster. Disaster came, and while it wasn’t always smooth sailing, Suzuki found a way to produce.

As difficult as this season has been, Suzuki’s perseverance in the face of adversity has been a huge silver lining.

For Brendan Shanahan, every loss hurts - The Globe and Mail

Toronto Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan is a throwback to a more cordial, more deeply considered time.Illustration by Photo illustration The Globe and Mail. Source photo: Chris Young/The Canadian Press

Of all the staffing coups enjoyed by the Toronto Maple Leafs in recent years, the original blockbuster was the homecoming of Brendan Shanahan. Raised in Mimico – a part of Toronto that is as much a two-fisted state of mind as it is a place – Shanahan is one of the great players this city has produced. He was also magically untainted by 50 years of despair. He was a winner and a Torontonian, two things that don’t belong together in the hockey context.

Since becoming club president nine years ago, Shanahan, 54, has developed a signature style. Rule No. 1 – don’t say much. Shanahan will pop up two, maybe three times a year to speak on behalf of the club. Otherwise, he lets his frontline employees do the talking.

If you can get him going about the glory days in Detroit, what he keeps coming back to are the player dinners. Everyone likes a long meal in a softly lit spot where all the waiters know what you like, but few enjoy it like Shanahan.

Private rooms in upscale steakhouses across Canada and the United States – that’s not the exact place where the Red Wings dynasty was built, but Shanahan would probably tell you it was one of them.

This interview was conducted in his favourite local spot. It’s the sort of place where a harried host lights up like a billboard when you say the name, ‘Shanahan’, and where the waiter doesn’t bother to ask what you’re ordering because you always get the same thing.

Like the man himself, it’s a throwback to a more cordial, more deeply considered time.

What’s your idea of perfect happiness?

Two ways. I like long friendships, long relationships and long dinners. My other addiction is to winning. Winning at anything. If I don’t have anyone to play against, I’ll play against a machine. iPad chess. Whatever.

What’s your greatest fear?

I get scared at lots of things, but I don’t get paralyzed by fear. I guess the ultimate is death, but what’s the point? Would it help?

What’s the trait you most dislike in yourself?

In spite of the fact that I was early today for this, I can at times be tardy.

What’s the trait you most dislike in others?

People who aren’t authentic.

What’s your greatest extravagance?

I grew up in a house of six. Five men and my mom. We had one toilet with no lock on the door and a bathtub. So every day that I get to go into my own personal bathroom at home, with my own personal shower, I feel like I am the ultimate snob.

On what occasion might you lie?

To preserve someone’s dignity.

Who or what is the great love of your life?

I would say my father [Donal Shanahan] because he is the great mystery and driving force of my life. I had that brilliant experience a son has with his dad where nothing he says is stupid, everything he does is amazing. He lost his faculties before I got to my teenage pushback years. So he’s become mythological to me.

I didn’t recognize it while I was a player, but looking back now, I see that I was such putty in the hands of every coach who tapped into making me want to get their approval.

What would you change about yourself?

One of the pearls of aging is realizing that if there’s something I want to change, I can do that. I try to change things constantly. If someone in my family or at work asked me to change something – maybe that’s the thing. If they asked, I would consider it.

What’s your greatest achievement?

That my children seem to respect me and like me. I mean, love is automatic. But when your children start to drift into adulthood, they have the option of respecting you or not respecting you. I can feel that respect. That’s my greatest achievement.

If you were to die and come back as a person or thing, who or what would it be?

Anything with a consciousness. I would love to come back as anything – a young boy, whatever – but with the consciousness I have now, and just sort of try it all over again.

What’s the lowest depth of misery?

Every loss.

Every one? Are we talking regular season, too?

All of them. Let’s say I’m watching a game at home and it’s winding down and we’re losing. My family will just, like, drift away from the room that I’m in. All of a sudden, I look up and I’m alone. Yeah, it’s the one thing I have to work really hard to manage. You learn how to do it as a professional – how to come out of it. But I still have to remind myself every time.

What’s your most marked characteristic?

Hmm. I think some people would think I’m introverted and others would call me outgoing. My brother once told me that I’m curious. I thought that was right. One of the things driving me out of that one-bathtub house in Mimico is curiosity about all sorts of things. I also think I’m relentless. It doesn’t always make me great company, but if there’s one thing I could pass on to my kids, it would be the ability to get back up from anything.

Do believe that’s become an undervalued skill?

I think it’s becoming harder for kids to develop grit. I don’t want to be one of those guys who’s like, ‘Well, when we were kids …’ I hate sentences that start like that. But I think their world is different now, more difficult.

Last one. What’s your motto?

My motto?

Yeah. Your motto.

I don’t have a motto and I don’t like people who do. [Bursts into laughter] What sort of pretentious asshole has a motto?

Eric, Marc Staal refuse to wear Panthers' Pride Night warmup jerseys - TSN

Florida Panthers forward Eric Staal and defenceman Marc Staal did not wear the team’s Pride Night warmup jerseys prior to Thursday’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, citing their religious beliefs.

The Staals released a statement on their decision through the Panthers PR:

“After many thoughts, prayers and discussions we have chosen not to wear a pride jersey tonight.

We carry no judgement on how people choose to live their lives, and believe that all people should be welcome in all aspects of the game of hockey.

Having said that, we feel that by us wearing a pride jersey it goes against our Christian beliefs.

We hope you can respect this statement, we will not be speaking any further on this matter and would like to continue to focus on the game and helping the Florida Panthers win the Stanley Cup.

Eric and Marc Staal”

The Panthers will be auctioning the Pride Night jerseys off in support of the You Can Play Team and the Florida Panthers Foundation will match dollar-for-dollar all funds raised and will donate that match back to LGBTQ+ nonprofits in the South Florida community.

The Staal’s join San Jose Sharks goaltender James Reimer, who refused to participate in wearing a Pride Night warmup jersey last week and Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Ivan Provorov who did the same in January.

CFL’s player composition changing before our eyes - TSN

For most of its existence, the Canadian Football League has laid claim to the best players in the world competing outside of the National Football League.

The league’s Canadian players, like the prospects who are gathered in Edmonton this week for the annual CFL Combine, come through a different stream.

But when it comes to Americans, the CFL benefited from being the next-best option to the NFL, and often the only thing standing between players and retirement. That’s why a lot of talented football players have made their way north over the years – even stars of the some of the biggest college programs in America.

With players unable to earn money as college athletes and there only being so many roster spots in the NFL, the market of high-quality American talent has been traditionally robust for CFL teams.

But the sands have shifted quickly under the CFL’s feet in recent years when it comes to the recruiting landscape, in ways subtle and not so subtle.

Let’s start with the obvious – the addition of two new professional spring leagues in the U.S. in the XFL, which re-launched in February, and the USFL, which will begin its second season in April.

Both of those leagues have rookie salaries competitive with the amount American players are offered to come to Canada, despite playing roughly half the number of games. But the spring leagues play 10-week regular seasons while CFL teams play 18 games over 21 weeks, and players in those spring leagues can step straight into an NFL camp the same season.

For former college players who want one more shot at the NFL, it’s a no-brainer to stay in the U.S.

Where the spring leagues eventually settle economically will have to wait until they can prove they are sustainable. But for now, they have bumped the CFL to fourth on the professional football pecking order, especially among those early in their careers, if for no other reason than they play American football in America in the spring.

That’s resulted in CFL scouts being told “no” more often, forcing them to look further down the college football hierarchy, away from the NFL factories and more towards players from smaller schools and conferences. It’s happening already.

A couple more subtle forces are helping that trend along.

One is the recent expansion of NFL practice rosters, in terms of numbers of players, salaries, and makeup.

NFL practice rosters have doubled in size from eight to 16 players per team over the past 10 years, taking 256 players off the market. Practice rosters used to be restricted to entry-level players with fewer than three seasons of NFL experience, but now every team can use up to six spots for veterans with no restrictions on accrued time.

The minimum salary is $207,000 for players within their first two years in the league, and $277,200 for players with more experience. Teams can and do often pay them more.

The kind of player who would have been starring in the CFL 10 years ago is now taking his chances on an NFL practice roster. And there are plenty of others willing to wait by the phone to join him rather than commit to a season in Canada for $75,000 (CDN).

When you add up the additional players on NFL practice rosters and the combined 16 teams in the XFL and USFL, it removes roughly 1,200 professional quality players from the open market for CFL teams.

As for access to NFL veterans, the soaring salaries in that league have made it less likely that those pushed out after earning millions will come to Canada for fractions of what they were previously earning.

The other below-the-radar factor is the introduction of NIL (Name Image and Likeness) deals for college athletes, many of whom at bigger programs earn six-figure college athlete salaries. The best players at the very top schools can earn into the millions.

College stars having to take a pay cut to continue playing professionally in the CFL is just another obstacle in the league’s way, at least from a player perception point of view. And more players leaving school with money in the bank means more players with options beyond football.

There will still be players who fall through the cracks to the CFL and use the three-down game to make their way back to the NFL, but those are likely to be fewer as well.

Add it all up and you’re looking at a very different recruiting world for CFL teams when it comes to American players.

Now, for the good news. And yes, there actually is some good news in this story and it has to do with one of the traditional criticisms directed at CFL teams – too much roster turnover with American players, whose careers in Canada could sometimes be counted in games or months, not years.

With a plentiful market of American players willing to come to Canada, CFL general managers could make changes with a single phone call, replacing anyone on their roster with someone who was cheaper, younger or, in their eyes, better.

The result was often head-spinning roster changes that impacted the ability of fans to identify with players, and made the CFL feel like a transient league.

Having a tighter U.S player market, with a premium on good American players who are willing to come to Canada, may improve this situation. Teams will fight harder to keep American players and extend their careers because replacing them is a lot harder than it used to be.

More roster stability, and more job security for American players, is good for the CFL.

The other good news, at least in some eyes, is that the league’s Canadian players will get more opportunities to shine as the talent gap shrinks between them and the league’s American players.

Combine the American trend with the overall level of Canadian talent improving and you’re seeing a shrinking gap between U.S. and Canadian talent that should be good for the game.

So, this isn’t a bad news story or a good news story. It’s both.

But the player composition of the CFL is changing before our eyes.

Canada's Einarson bounces back against South Korea after loss to Germany at curling worlds - CBC Sports

Canada's Kerri Einarson beat South Korea's Seungyoun Ha 8-6 to salvage a split of her games Wednesday at the women's world curling championship in Sandviken, Sweden.

South Korea was heavy with its final rock to give Canada three points in the 10th end.

The victory moved Canada (6-3) into a second-place tie with Italy's Stefania Constantini. Switzerland's Silvana Tirinzoni (8-0) was on top of the 13-team round-robin standings.

Einarson dropped an 8-3 decision to Germany's Daniela Jentsch earlier in the day at the Goransson Arena.

"It was huge for us, especially for our confidence level," Einarson said. "We came out with a pretty solid game. We really focused on our speeds.

"The speed this game was much better than the previous. Mentally it's been really tough because it's changing every single game. We're giving it our all out there and we're trying to figure it out, but it's been really challenging."

Kerri Einarson and her Canadian rink defeated Korea 8-6 Wednesday at the world women's curling championship in Sandviken, Sweden.

After giving up points in the first and second ends against South Korea, Einarson responded with a deuce in the third to tie the game.

Canada was in trouble without hammer in the fifth. Einarson, drawing against four on her first shot of the end, froze onto a stone in the top-four foot and South Korea was forced to take a single point.

"I thought we were dead in the fifth end and were giving up four," Einarson said. "But they let us off the hook there and I made my freeze when the girls swept it perfectly. That was a game-saver."

Against Germany, the Manitoba-based team of Einarson, Val Sweeting, Shannon Birchard and Briane Harris conceded after giving up four points in the eighth end.

Canada missed a long double-raise takeout on Einarson's last throw. Germany drew for another point to end the game.

"Unfortunately we missed a couple of shots early and in the mid-part of the end to set up a potential steal," said Canada coach Reid Carruthers. "But they made some great freezes that put the pressure on us and left Kerri with a difficult one."

Canada's Kerri Einarson falls to Germany's Daniela Jentsch 8-3 at the women's world curling championship. The German team improves to a 5-3 record while the Canadian squad drops into an identical 5-3 record.

Germany was tied with Sweden's Anna Hasselborg and Norway's Marianne Roervik at 5-3. South Korea was next at 4-4.

Einarson shot just 61 per cent against Germany and was 53 per cent on her takeouts. Her teammates all shot at least 80 per cent overall.

The Canadian skip picked up her numbers in the late game, finishing at 80 per cent.

Round-robin play continues through Friday. Six teams will qualify for the playoff round with the top two rinks receiving byes to the semifinals.

Medal games are scheduled for Sunday.

Canada plays Japan in its line game on Thursday.

Einarson won bronze at last year's world championship in Prince George, B.C. Switzerland beat South Korea in the final.

Need to Know: Bruins vs. Senators - NHL.com

BOSTON - The Bruins will be back on home ice on Tuesday night as they return from a lengthy five-game road trip to host the Ottawa Senators at TD Garden. Boston has bounced back to win three straight after a brief lull in its record-breaking season produced a stretch of three losses in four games.

"Hold ourselves accountable," Matt Grzelcyk said of how the Bruins have rebounded quickly from the downturn. "And I feel like that Winnipeg game, we got a huge goal second shift, I think that just kind of starts getting things going the right way - and having that more attacking mentality offensively, defensively, taking time and space away from them. And I think it was a good transition and that's when we could kind of overwhelm teams."

Here's everything else you need to know ahead of the 7 p.m. ET puck drop on NESN and 98.5 The Sports Hub:

On the Injury Front

Derek Forbort did not take part in the morning skate and is unlikely to play again before the postseason, per coach Jim Montgomery. The blue liner suffered a lower-body injury after blocking a shot on March 16 in Winnipeg.

"We do not expect him back before the end of the regular season," said Montgomery, who added that Forbort does not require surgery.

Taylor Hall and Nick Foligno, both of whom have been out for nearly a month with lower-body injuries of their own, have resumed skating. Foligno took the ice on his own ahead of Tuesday's morning skate, while Hall joined his teammates donning a maroon non-contact jersey.

"They're checking boxes and are progressing well, but there's no timeline for them yet," said Montgomery. "I still think they are a ways away. It's not at the point where I'm starting to think about lines and stuff."

When they do return, however, Montgomery is eager to have plenty of options up front.

"I don't think it's a problem. It's a great situation," he said. "You'll get to see when they get back who plays with who, and a deep lineup is going to get even deeper. So, it's a great problem to have."

After sitting out Sunday's game in Buffalo, David Krejci (soreness) and Dmitry Orlov (defense rotation) will be back in the lineup. A.J. Greer and Jakub Zboril will be the healthy scratches.

Opposing View

The Senators, on the second end of a back-to-back, snapped a five-game losing streak on Monday night with a 2-1 win over Pittsburgh. The recent downturn has pushed Ottawa (34-31-5, 73 points) six points behind Florida for the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.

After winning the first two games against the Bruins this season - both on home ice - the Senators fell to Boston, 3-1, on Feb. 20 at TD Garden.

"I think they won [on Monday night], so they're probably feeling pretty good about themselves," said Grzelcyk. "Every game probably feels pretty close to a playoff game and they haven't been there in a few years. They've got a lot to prove and they've got a lot of young talent…a good power play.

"We've got to stay disciplined, something we've lacked in a little bit recently. I've got to be mindful of that and I don't want to give them any easy opportunities. And they played last night, so get on them early and make them work for it."

Ottawa is paced by Tim Stutzle, who leads the club with 35 goals and 78 points in 66 games. Brady Tkachuk (30-42-72) has also hit the 30-goal, 70-point plateau, while Claude Giroux (28-30-68), Alex DeBrincat (21-35-56), and Drake Batherson (21-34-55) have reached the 20-goal mark.
