NHL postpones Edmonton hub city announcement - Edmonton Journal

The Edmonton Oilers, City of Edmonton, Government of Alberta and NHL all had representatives lined up Saturday afternoon to discuss the return of hockey to Rogers Place when the plug was abruptly pulled on the joint media availability.

A video media conference with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, NHL chief content officer and hub city lead Steve Mayer, Oilers chairman Bob Nicholson, senior vice president of communication Tim Shipton, Alberta premier Jason Kenney and Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson was postponed at the request of the league an hour before it was scheduled to take place.

Edmonton, along with Toronto, were officially named hub cities for the NHL’s return to play plan Friday evening. Toronto also postponed a scheduled media conference Saturday at the behest of the league.

“While we believe we’re buttoned down at the provincial level in Ontario and Alberta, there are still a couple of details that we are just finalizing with the federal government at the federal level,” Bettman said in an earlier video conference Saturday. “We thought, collectively, it would be better to postpone the media avails that both hub cities and clubs were planning until those details were finalized.”
