NFL rumors: Why Roger Goodell made smart call on 2020 NFL Draft - SILive.com

Yes, I’m serious. And no, it’s not just the sports writer and talk show host in me that’s happy for content.

Goodell made the right call going forth with free agency despite the coronavirus pandemic. He’s now making the right call to go ahead with the 2020 NFL Draft on April 23 in the safest (no in-person visits, pro days or live NFL Draft extravaganza in Las Vegas) way possible.

Here’s why this is smart.

If not now, when? This is critical when thinking about postponing offseason events. Unlike the NBA, NHL or MLB, the NFL doesn’t yet have to worry about canceled games or practices. We’re not at that point of the calendar in football. If, say, general managers around the sport wanted to wait a month for the draft, who is to say the landscape of things with the coronavirus will be any better or any closer to normal then? We don’t know, so there’s little reason to hope on a postponement

Sports fans need this, and will be glued to televisions and devices: The NFL knows how to take center stage like no other entity. When free agency took place, it was a much-needed distraction as we all could pretend life was normal if even for just a few minutes or hours per day as we watched star players (like Tom Brady) change teams and sign new deals. The same thing will happen when the draft arrives.

Perfection is the enemy of progress: Will the draft process be altered without the ability for teams to see a player in person and for scouts to go across the country? Sure. But let’s not pretend this is necessary to identify good players. Game tape is available for any executive to view in the comfort of their home. Visits and interviews with players could be achieved through technology. FaceTime or Zoom isn’t just for regular people.
