- Comedian Sebastian Maniscalco is hosting the MTV VMAs.
- Twitter is pissed about him making fun of safe spaces and trigger warnings.
If you're watching the MTV VMAs, then you're probably wondering 1) Who the eff is Sebastian Maniscalco? (Don't worry, we got you covered with a Sebastian 101 lesson.) And 2) Why the hell does he think it's funny to make jokes about safe spaces and trigger warnings?
Sebastian, who apparently has a comedy special on Netflix, chose to make his foray into the public's lexicon by making fun of the need for marginalized people to feel safe in this day and age. He basically reduced that need and compared it to people just being overly sensitive. In short: It was rude, ignorant, and uncalled for.
Safe to say, Twitter was not here for it. After viewers got past the fact that they've never heard of this guy before, they reacted with the equivalent of that cringey Chrissy Teigen meme.
One user also asked why MTV would green-light something like that especially after Taylor Swift's inclusive performance. They wrote, "...really?? After Taylor just kicked ass and did that super inclusive prideful performance, this asshat nobody’s ever heard of, Sebastian Maniscalco had to come out and bash safe spaces?? what a loser."
Plus, can someone please explain why he was making millennial jokes to a room full of youths? Like, read the room next time?
Of course, there were some people who thought he was actually really funny and enjoyed the safe spaces jokes, but the majority of Twitter feedback was begging for MTV to do better next time and get Sebastian off the stage.
If you want to watch the hot mess that was his opening set, look no further:
