Lakers Rumors: Dwight Howard is reportedly ‘excited about the prospect’ of teaming up with LeBron James, Anth… - Silver Screen and Roll

Over the course of his 15-year career, Dwight Howard has had the privilege of playing with some of the best players to ever lace up a pair of sneakers, including Vince Carter, Kobe Bryant and, most recently, James Harden. This season, he’s hoping to add two more names to that list by signing with the Los Angeles Lakers—the team that currently employs LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Howard likes the idea of helping James and Davis lead the Lakers to a championship next season and is willing to do whatever it takes to help them achieve that goal:

“By all accounts, Dwight Howard is motivated right now and he wants to be a part of a potential Lakers team and I’m told he’s excited about the prospect of joining LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and really doing whatever is asked of him: rebounding, blocking shots, defending—whatever it takes for him to be a part of a championship contender and essentially capping off his career with a title and redeeming himself from that one season he spent in L.A.”

In theory, Howard is an above-average backup center that could be valuable to the Lakers in the right role. However, there are serious doubts as to whether or not the same will be true in practice, mostly because it hasn’t been over the past few years.

Similar to Carmelo Anthony, Howard has had a hard time coming to terms with the fact that he’s not an All-Star caliber player anymore. That attitude has forced him to suit up for four teams over the last four years.

Granted, Howard told Charania that he’s ready to put his ego aside in a recent interview, but he’s given people plenty of reasons to be skeptical over the years.

Howard might be the most talented center on the market, but there are players that are more self aware than he is (or has been in the past) and have less red flags. Unless those players are unavailable, Howard shouldn’t be the Lakers’ first choice.
