Comic-Con kicked off last week, but things got juicy when Marvel Studios grabbed hold of the event and Hulk-smashed its way through Hall H in San Diego, making epic announcement after epic announcement.
While the program description for Marvel’s presentation was fairly vague, teasing that studio president and producer Kevin Feige and “surprise panelists” would “provide an inside look at the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe,” no one expected the entire slate for Phase 4 to come out one after another. First, Feige announced that “the Infinity Saga is complete,” which anyone who has seen Avengers: Endgame already knows. But then he went on to outline what fans can expect in the next couple of years — then proceeded to trot out everyone from old favourites to familiar faces and newcomers of the MCU. It’s safe to say, no one does it better than Marvel.
The lineup included the Avengers we already know and love — Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Renner, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Elisabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tessa Thompson and Natalie Portman (OK, the last isn’t technically an Avenger but she’s got history) — but it’s the newbies who might blow your freaking minds. Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, Richard Madden, Salma Hayek, Bryan Tyree Henry, David Harbour, Rachel Weisz, Florence Pugh, O-T Fagbenle, Simu Liu, Jeffrey Wright, Teyonah Parris, Mahershala Ali. And so many more. The cherry on top of Marvel’s sweet, sweet cake is knowing that as they announced Phase 4, Avengers: Endgame overtook Avatar this past weekend to become the highest grossing film of all time, taking in an estimated $2.79 billion U.S. in worldwide grosses in just 13 weeks. Finding out that news on a weekend while at Comic-Con? Well, they certainly knew how to celebrate: by surprising fans with the Winter Soldier himself.
Kicking what’s coming to the big screen, there’s the standalone movie fans have been waiting for. Black Widow, is set to hit theatres on May 1, 2020.
The Eternals is scheduled for a November 6, 2020, release, and if you’ve missed the mom of six in fighting form, you won’t have to wait too long. “We are all going to be working really hard,” Jolie assured fans. “We know what you want. I am in training.”
For the fourth Thor movie, we’ll see the return of Portman, this time as a female version of the Goddess of Thunder. Thompson also revealed that her character Valkyrie, who was deemed the new ruler of Asgard in Endgame, would be looking to find her queen. “That will be the first order of business,” she told fans.
All it took was some sweet intervention from the Twitter gods for Kim’s Convenience star Simu Liu to land the lead role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, slated to hit theatres on February 21, 2021. Awkwafina and Tony Leung will co-star.
We’ll also see the sequel to the Cumberbatch actioner, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Ali takes over for Wesley Snipes in an update of Blade.
As for the streaming service, the original series that are in the works are Loki, which will star Hiddleston; WandaVision, starring Olsen as Scarlet Witch and Bettany as Vision; Mackie and Stan will headline The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which will also see the return of Daniel Brühl’s bad guy, Baron Zemo, from Captain America: Cvil War; and finally, Hawkeye, starring Renner and will introduce the infamous Kate Bishop, who has yet to be cast.
Last time Marvel Studios attended San Diego Comic-Con, Feige teased the introduction of the Skrulls into the MCU, the green aliens in Captain Marvel and, if you stuck around to watch it, the final post-credits scene in Spider-Man: Far From Home. This year was just a bit bigger. Add in the sequels to Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Guardians of the Galaxy and Fantastic Four and Marvel’s pretty much got the box office in the bag for the next several years.
