This in from the research team of BetOnLine, a map showing that when it comes to these Stanley Cup playoffs, the Edmonton Oilers are indeed Canada’s team in the Stanley Cup Finals.
TheBetOnLine survey found that 22 American states and 10 Canadian provinces favour for the Oilers to win over the Panthers, while not one province and 28 States are rooting for the Panthers.

I have to say this result surprised me somewhat, given how much anti-Oilers sentiment I read on social media, in particular out of Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto. But, it seems, a handful of anti-Edmonton trolls may get a lot of attention on social media, but they’re not representative of the general sentiment of Canadian hockey fans.
BetOnLine’s methodology? Essentially, the betting site is using pro-Oilers and pro-Panthers social media hashtags as a proxy for support for the two teams: “The map is based on geotagged X (Twitter) data from Sunday evening to now (when the matchup was set) tracking official fan hashtags in every state and the 10 Canadian provinces. For example #LetsGoOilers (Oilers) and #TimeToHunt (Panthers). Over 110,000 tweets were tracked. As you can see from the map, it almost seems to be a ‘North’ vs. ‘South’ type of setup with all of Canada and much of the upper US rooting for the Oilers, while the southern US is rooting for the Panthers,” says Stuff media president Jimmy Shapiro, who released the graphic.

State and province breakdown
Oilers: 22 states, 10 provinces (Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming)
Panthers; 28 states, 0 provinces (Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia)
Of course, if you’re determined to hate on the Oilers you can quibble with the methodology here, and suggest that using those hashtags is not the same as supporting the Oilers or the Panthers. As I see it, though, it tends to be enthusiastic boosters of the team that use such pro-team messages as #LetsGoOilers and #TimeToHunt hashtags. I mean, what kind of troll is going to say something nasty about Connor McDavid, and then add that #LetsGoOilers battle cry to his or her post?

P.S. I heard NHL insider Frank Seravalli on Oilers Now mention that he felt when it comes to the Oilers, Leon Draisaitl was the media’s pick for team MVP so far in the playoffs. That’s not how I see it, and I was wondering if other fans felt the same way.
My own vote in the poll was for Evan Bouchard, brilliant on the attack, best defense he’s ever played and timely scoring.
How do you see it? Here’s the Twitter X poll:
