A familiar play of sportsmanship in most levels of hockey in Newfoundland and Labrador is coming to an end.
Citing altercations involving players and coaches, Hockey NL is banning the post-game handshake in the new year. Hockey NL says players and coaches have been suspended because of incidents which occur after the final buzzer.
Instead, prior to the opening face-off, the home team will go to the bench and the visiting team will skate by the bench and do a glove/tap handshake wishing the home team a good game.
After the game, both teams will be directed to their dressing rooms by the officials.
The change takes effect for all games following the Christmas break.
