ELMONT, N.Y. -- The New York Islanders clinched the final Stanley Cup Playoff berth in the Eastern Conference with a 4-2 win against the Montreal Canadiens at UBS Arena on Wednesday.

Brock Nelson scored twice for the Islanders (42-31-9). Ilya Sorokin made 17 saves.

Sam Montembeault made 31 saves, and Rem Pitlick and Nick Suzuki scored for the Canadiens (31-44-6).

Nelson gave New York a 1-0 lead 10:27 into the game with his 35th of the season. He finished a give-and-go with Kyle Palmieri with a shot from the right circle that beat Montembeault to the glove side.

Pitlick tied the game 1-1 with 2:22 left in the first. Noah Dobson committed a turnover in the defensive zone, and Jake Evans jumped on the loose puck and found Pitlick, who scored from a sharp angle.

Hudson Fasching gave New York a 2-1 lead 1:19 later by jamming a rebound under Montembeault.

Nelson's second goal of the game extended the lead to 3-1 at 10:20 of the second period. The center tipped Dobson's point shot past Montembeault.

Suzuki's unassisted shorthanded goal with 3:22 left in the second cut New York's lead to 3-2. Montreal's top-line center deflected the puck away from Ryan Pulock in the defensive zone and outraced Samuel Bolduc before one-handing a shot over Sorokin's glove while falling to the ice.

Anders Lee's power play goal with 4:00 extended the lead to 4-2. New York's captain tipped Sebastian Aho's shot-pass.
