Friday is the fourth day of the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship, which is being held at Rogers Place in Edmonton.
Day 4 games
Sweden 6, Austria 0 -- Emil Andrae, a Philadelphia Flyers defenseman prospect, scored two goals in 55 seconds in the second period as Sweden stayed undefeated in Group B.
Isak Rosen (Buffalo Sabres) and Fabian Lysell (Boston Bruins) each had a goal and an assist and Oskar Olausson (Colorado Avalanche) had three assists for Sweden (2-0-0-0). Calle Clang (Anaheim Ducks) made 14 saves.
"I think it was a lot better than our first and we wanted to move on from that (3-2 win against Switzerland on Wednesday)," Sweden coach Tomas Monten said. "... We didn't force things, we were smart, we had smart decisions with the puck and I think that's really important for this team going forward."
Sebastian Wraneschitz made 35 saves for Austria (0-0-0-2).
Simon Edvinsson (Detroit Red Wings) made it 1-0 at 12:57 of the first period, taking a cross-ice pass from Olausson and scoring on a slap shot from above the right face-off circle.
Rosen scored a power-play goal at 59 seconds into the second period to make it 2-0. He then forced an Austria turnover deep in the offensive zone and passed across to a pinching Andrae, who scored at 14:35 for a 3-0 lead.
Andrae made it 4-0 at 15:30 when he scored a power-play goal.
Lysell scored from a sharp angle on the power play to make it 5-0 at 9:07 of the third period, and Theodor Niederbach (Detroit Red Wings) scored for the 6-0 final with 26 seconds remaining.
Sweden next plays the United States on Sunday. Austria plays the United States on Saturday.
"It was nice to get a controlled win. We played much better today than against Switzerland so nice to get that one," Edvinsson said. "We would like to continue on this good path... if we play this good or even better, we can beat USA as well."
Slovakia 3, Latvia 2 (SO) -- Matej Kaslik scored the deciding goal in the fifth round of the shootout to give Slovakia its first win in Group A.
Adam Sykora (New York Rangers) and Dalibor Dvorsky scored, and Simon Latkoczy made 23 saves for Slovakia (0-1-0-2), which has never lost in seven games against Latvia at the WJC.
"It was a tough game for us," Sykora said. "Yesterday we lost 11-1 against Canada, so it was real hard to prepare for this game against Latvia. But we were able to win it in penalty shots, and that's really going to help our team moving forward."
Dans Locmelis and Niks Fenenko scored for Latvia (0-0-1-2), which was seeking its first win at the WJC since 2012, when it defeated Denmark in the relegation round. Bruno Bruveris made 39 saves.
"It was a tough loss," Locmelis said. "I think we could play much better, but unfortunately we lost it. It was the most important game in the tournament for us, but we have one game left, and we're going to go and do our best."
Locmelis gave Latvia a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 9:44 of the first period. He was first to a loose puck at the side of the net after a point shot from Ralfs Bergmanis hit off traffic in front.
Sykora tied it 1-1 at 17:57, finishing a passing play with Jakub Demek.
"We are really happy that we found a way to win this game," Demek said. "We were a little unlucky not to score on more of our shots, but I think we played like a good team, and you could see our skill in the shootout."
Dvorsky gave Slovakia a 2-1 lead at 9:54 of the second period, gathering a rebound at the side of the net and scoring short side on Bruveris.
Fenenko tied it 2-2 at 12:39 when his shot from a sharp angle was misplayed by Latkoczy and bounced into the net.
"I'm not happy and the team is not happy either, because we needed to win this game," Bergmanis said. "We didn't start well, and in the second half of the game we started to play much better, but that was not enough, unfortunately."
Slovakia will next play Finland on Sunday. Latvia will play Czechia the same day.
