Raptors sign Jackson to contract - TSN

The Toronto Raptors added some depth to their lineup on Wednesday, signing forward Josh Jackson to a contract.

Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed by the Raptors.

Jackson, 25, averaged 6.4 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 51 games split between the Detroit Pistons and Sacramento Kings last season. He shot 40 per cent from the field and 25.4 per cent from three.

The Kansas product was selected fourth overall in the 2017 NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns, spending two seasons in the desert before being dealt to the Memphis Grizzlies in July of 2019.

For his career, Jackson is averaging 11.3 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.8 assists over 291 games in five total seasons with the Suns, Grizzlies, Pistons and Kings.

Hernandez lifts Blue Jays over Cubs - TSN

TORONTO — Teoscar Hernandez says his foot hurts all the time, especially when running, but that didn't stop him from going all out on Tuesday night.

Hernandez made a highlight-reel sliding catch in right field and then hit a three-run homer to give Toronto its first lead of the game as the Blue Jays beat the Chicago Cubs 5-3.

"I've been battling for the last couple of weeks with injuries and all that stuff," said Hernandez, who did not play in Monday's 5-4 win over Chicago. "Not having a good time at the plate or on defence.

"I try to do the best that I can and I did it today and it feels great."

The homer was Hernandez's 100th hit of the season, the eighth Blue Jay to reach the century mark in 2022. The Los Angeles Dodgers and Colorado Rockies have six each for second most in Major League Baseball behind Toronto.

It's the first time in franchise history that eight players have 100-plus hits before September.

"At this point, it feels great because it helps the team win," said Hernandez. "That's the only thing that matters for me right now."

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had a solo home run and batted in a run with a single to back Kevin Gausman's superb start for Toronto (70-58).

Gausman (10-9) struck out nine and allowed five hits, including two home runs. David Phelps, Anthony Bass, Trevor Richards and closer Jordan Romano came out of the bullpen.

Romano earned a four-out save, his 28th of the season.

"(Gausman) was awesome. Tons of swing-and-miss, lots of punch outs, obviously just a couple of mistakes that were hit hard for home runs, but he was awesome," said interim Toronto manager John Schneider. "You always want to try to reward that with a good bullpen effort and they stepped up."

Christopher Morel had a solo shot and an RBI double for Chicago (55-75). Wilson Contreras opened the scoring with a home run in the fourth.

Marcus Stroman earned a no decision, even as he held the Blue Jays to three hits, a walk and a run with one strikeout. Brendon Little (0-1), Michael Rucker and Jeremiah Estrada came on in relief.

Gausman was especially sharp in the second and third, striking out five consecutive batters between the two innings. He ended the second by fanning Franmil Reyes and Nico Hoerner, then got Nelson Velazquez, P.J. Higgins and Morel swinging in the third.

"A lot of them are heaters up and that's a big pitch for me," said Gausman on his early efficiency. "When I'm able to do that I'm tough on hitters."

Contreras got to Gausman with one out in the fourth. He took the first pitch he saw, an 85 m.p.h. slider, to deep left field for a 1-0 Chicago lead.

Reyes came to the plate three batters later and sent a looping hit to deep right field for what would likely be a double. Hernandez sprinted full out and slid low under the ball, making the catch to end the inning.

"I didn't think he had a chance to get to it," said Gausman. "Any time you're looking at a play like that, you're looking at the guy, you're looking at the ball and you kind of keep looking at both of them, y'know? Which one's going to get there quicker.

"I didn't think he had any chance but was a helluva play."

Guerrero tied it in the fifth when his single drove home Danny Jansen and advanced George Springer to third.

Morel re-established the Cubs' lead in the next inning. He hit his 13th home run of the season to deep left field, making no mistake on Gausman's 92.9 m.p.h four-seam fastball.

After Little hit Bo Bichette with a pitch and Matt Chapman beat the throw to first for a base hit, Hernandez came to the plate. He sailed a sinker 382 feet to deep right for a 4-2 Toronto lead.

Morel chipped away at Toronto's lead in the seventh, stroking a double to left field to cash in Velazquez and make it 4-3.

Chants of "Vladdy! Vladdy! Vladdy!" rained down from the 33,759 in attendance at Rogers Centre after Guerrero led off the seventh inning with a solo home run to right field. His 27th of the season came off of a four-seam fastball from Rucker.

UP NEXT — Mitch White (1-4) gets the start for Toronto as the Blue Jays close out their interleague series against the Cubs. Chicago has yet to name its starter for the evening game.

Hockey Canada board backs president Scott Smith amid calls for change - CBC Sports

Hockey Canada's board of directors says it is supporting president and chief executive officer Scott Smith and his executive team amid calls for leadership change at the organization.

Interim board chair Andrea Skinner announced the backing of the organization's executive in a statement posted Monday on its website.

The statement did not detail a reason for the show of support, but said the board is is undertaking "ongoing efforts to restore the trust of Canadians in hockey and Hockey Canada," which include a governance review.

Canada's governing body of hockey is under intense scrutiny for its handling of sexual assault allegations against members of previous men's junior teams.

Fierce advocate for sexual abuse survivors and retired NHL player Sheldon Kennedy repeated his calls Tuesday for Hockey Canada's leadership to resign.

"For the betterment of the game and kids, the leadership group at Hockey Canada must resign as they have lost the trust of Canadians in their ability to lead. That is crystal clear," he told The Canadian Press.

The federal government froze Hockey Canada's funding after it was revealed the organization had quietly settled a lawsuit with a woman who alleged she was sexually assaulted by members of the 2018 men's junior team at Hockey Canada gala in London, Ont., that year.

Several of Hockey Canada's corporate partners suspended their support of Hockey Canada after executives were grilled by MPs during a Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage meeting about the organization's response to the alleged assault. The results were evident at the world junior championship earlier this month in Edmonton, where the ice and boards at Rogers Place were almost completely free of advertising.

Hockey Canada later said members of the 2003 junior team are under investigation for alleged sexual assault in Nova Scotia.

Man speaks out about alleged sexual assault involving members of 2003 World Juniors hockey team

Warning: This story contains sexually graphic details that may be disturbing to readers Disturbing details have emerged about an alleged group sexual assault by some members of Canada's 2003 World Juniors hockey team. A man who recently gave Halifax police the names of two players who may have been involved says he saw a recording nearly 20 years ago of the alleged incident.

Sheldon Kennedy, an advocate for sexual abuse survivors and one of the victims of serial abuser Graham James, has called on Hockey Canada's leadership to resign. There has been cross-partisan support for that sentiment from MPs on the heritage committee, which has twice heard testimony from Smith and other executives on their handling of the allegations.

So far, the only change at the top has been the resignation of previous board chair Michael Brind'Amour, who stepped down Aug. 6 before his term was set to end in November.

'Sport cannot self-regulate'

Rob Koehler, the director general of Global Athlete, an international athlete-led movement founded to address the balance of power between athletes and administrators, said he wasn't surprised the board is publicly supporting Smith.

"Anyone in Canadian sport knows that the well-paid national sport organization CEOs wield the majority of the power over volunteer boards. Ms. Skinner's statement is akin to the fox guarding the henhouse," Koehler said.

"Sport cannot self-regulate. Sport, like every industry, needs oversight, accountability and transparency. Sport has none of these. Until the Canadian government demands these principles, sports will continue to be a breeding ground for abuse."

The scrutiny on Hockey Canada tightened when it was revealed that the organization used its multimillion-dollar National Equity Fund, which comes from player fees, for uninsured payments including the settlement of sexual abuse claims.

Hockey Canada said at a heritage committee hearing on July 27 that it has paid out $7.6 million in nine settlements concerning sexual assault and sexual abuse claims since 1989, with $6.8 million of that related to serial abuser Graham James.

Sports Minister Pascale St-Onge talks to guest host Ashley Burke about her reaction to the latest allegations of sexual assault by junior hockey players and the mounting calls for Hockey Canada’s leadership to resign.

The organization has said since that the fund will no longer be used to settle sexual assault settlements.

Conservative John Nater, Liberal Anthony Housefather and New Democrat Peter Julian have been among the MPs calling for a change in leadership at Hockey Canada.

"I think it's fair to say that Hockey Canada simply has not stepped up. … Canadians have been let down," Julian said at the July 27 committee hearing.

"There needs to be a bigger cultural change in Hockey Canada than you're currently promising," Housefather said.

Smith has said he believes he is "the right person" to lead Hockey Canada but said he would respect the findings of the governance review.

The review, led by former Supreme Court judge Thomas Cromwell, is expected to provide interim recommendations before Hockey Canada's annual general meeting in November.

Danny Jansen's RBI single gives Blue Jays walk-off win - MLB.com

TORONTO -- Watching the Blue Jays’ offense can feel like following along as someone tries to open a pickle jar: Long periods of struggle and frustration, with little visible progress, until it just … pops open.

The catcher hit a walk-off single in the 11th inning to give the Blue Jays a 5-4 win over the Cubs at Rogers Centre. He was also responsible for Toronto’s first three RBIs, with a three-run shot in the seventh that gave his team its first extra-base hit of the game.

“Sometimes it takes one inning, or one at-bat, or one game to get rolling,” said Blue Jays interim manager John Schneider. “And I think that’s kind of what we saw again tonight.”

For most of the night, Monday’s game looked like a continuation of the Blue Jays’ weekend. The bats stayed quiet while starter José Berríos surrendered four unanswered runs in 5 2/3 innings of work.

The rally started with a 10-pitch walk to Matt Chapman, who also hit the game-tying RBI single later on. Raimel Tapia followed that up with a single to put men on first and third, and that’s when the players in the Blue Jays' dugout took off their hats and waved them in the air, in the hopes of helping along with the momentum shift.

Jansen took a 2-2 slider from Erich Uelmen to straightaway center field, putting the game back within reach as his teammates erupted with joy. They did so again, tenfold, after Jansen singled off Mark Leiter Jr. and Chapman bolted from second to home for the winning run.

“They were pumped up,” said Schneider.

The euphoria was understandable.

After a disheartening sweep by the Angels in which Toronto was shut out twice in three games over the weekend, Monday’s contest had the potential to turn into a season-defining moment. And though the home team put up quality at-bats against Cubs rookie Javier Assad, it took a while for the knocks to roll in.

“The hits didn’t really come when we needed them to come,” said Schneider. “But if we can stay consistent, from 1 through 9, to continue to have a consistent approach would be good. Because, obviously, this team is really, really talented.”

A word that has bounced around the Blue Jays’ clubhouse a lot these days is “confidence.” In the midst of a streaky season and a whole lot of expectations, the team kept its focus on Monday night, turning up crucial defensive plays to keep the game within reach while working toward the big offensive moment.

Jansen shined on that side of the ball, too.

With the Cubs sporting a 2-0 lead and runners on second and third in the fifth, Berríos struck out Ian Happ on a ball in the dirt for the second out. Jansen completed the out with a throw to first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who quickly fired the ball back to home plate as Nick Madrigal tried to advance from third. The exchange was seamless, the transfer was elite and Madrigal was tagged for the final out of the frame.

“That was an incredible play,” said Jansen. “That was a wild one, too. You don’t draw it up much, right? You don’t see it often. It was great on Vladdy, getting rid of it right away and getting the putout.”

That was far from the night’s only defensive highlight, which was a welcome change after a weekend that can only be described as sloppy for Blue Jays fielders. Bo Bichette was at the center of more than one game-saving moment, including an unassisted double play in the 10th inning that allowed Yimi Garcia to quickly retire the side and come back out for the 11th.

“I can’t say enough about the defense,” said Jansen. “Berríos battling, the bullpen coming in and keeping the score where it was, in those extra innings, especially. That’s the reason why we had the position to win.”

Berríos didn’t have as dominant an outing as his previous couple of starts, striking out four Cubs batters while allowing 10 hits, one walk and four earned runs. But the Blue Jays' bullpen came up big, as has become a theme in the latter part of this season, keeping Chicago off the board from the seventh inning onward.

It was the type of win to build on. The Blue Jays have a two-game lead over the Orioles for the final Wild Card spot in the American League and find themselves just one game off of the top spot in a race with the potential to come down to the wire.

Raptors waiving forward Svi Mykhailiuk to free up roster spot - Sportsnet.ca

The Toronto Raptors are reportedly waiving forward Svi Mykhailiuk, the team announced Monday.

The move makes room for guard Jalen Harris, who was recently reinstated by the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association after serving a one-year suspension for a positive drug test.

The Raptors hold Harris's rights as a restricted free agent, but the team had previously been at the maximum 20 players allowed heading into training camp.

Mykhailiuk, a native of Ukraine, averaged 4.6 points and 1.6 rebounds in 56 appearances for the Raptors.

He had exercised his US$1.9-million player option for the upcoming season.

Harris, meanwhile, was suspended on July 1, 2021, after testing positive for a prohibited substance under the NBA/NBPA anti-drug program.

The 24-year-old Dallas native spent the past few months playing for the expansion Scarborough Shooting Stars of the Canadian Elite Basketball League.

Training camp opens Sept. 27 in Victoria.

Paula Reto wins CP Women’s Open for first career victory on LPGA Tour - Sportsnet.ca

Judged purely on number of fans and the volume of their cheers, Brooke Henderson appeared to be the runaway winner of the CP Women's Open.

But the all-time winningest professional golfer in Canadian history finished 14 shots back of South Africa's Paula Reto to tie for 49th at the national championship on Sunday. Reto shot a final round of 4-under 67 to win her first-ever LPGA Tour title by one stroke at 19-under overall.

"It was amazing," said Henderson of the hundreds of fans that followed her around Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club. "I didn't necessarily expect that because I was thinking, you know, they should go and see some really good golf happening.

"It's amazing that they were out there the whole time, just so many people. I felt the love all week."

Reto's 4-under round was enough to lift her over third round co-leaders Narin An (72) and Hye-Jin Choi (69) of South Korea. It was also just enough to fend off a late charge from Nelly Korda (67) of the United States.

"I was trying not to watch the leaderboard," said Reto, who played in the day's final group with An and Choi. "I sort of knew where the girls in my group were, so I was just trying to make sure I stayed with them or maybe one or two ahead.

"That was the only thing I could control. You can't do too much."

A win would have lifted Korda back into the top spot on the women's world golf rankings. She dropped down the standings after having to take time off due to a blood clot in her arm.

"I think I had a decent shot at it," said Korda. "I played good golf, and honestly, I'm just grateful that I am playing golf and I'm out here, and I'm enjoying every second of it."

Reto fired a course-record 9-under 62 at Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club in Thursday's first round, besting Henderson's former mark of 63 set at the 2017 CP Women's Open. American Lindy Duncan matched Reto's record in the second round, split over Friday and Saturday due to a rain delay.

Despite Reto's consistently strong performance, Henderson remained the star of the show.

Growing up in nearby Smiths Falls, Ont., the 24-year-old Henderson's image was used extensively in promotional materials, from decals on hotel windows, to wraps on the grandstands, and even hand-held signs of her face for children to hold.

Even as Henderson made par on her final hole of the day fans chanted her name, whistled, and cheered.

"It's hard to put into words how much that means to me," said Henderson. "I'm a Canadian and everyone out here is proud to be Canadian too, so it was just a great week."

Hamilton's Alena Sharp (67) finished tied for 17th at 10 under. It's the third time that Sharp has earned the Sandra Post Award given to the low Canadian at the tournament.

Maddie Szeryk (71) of London, Ont., tied for 26th at 9 under for her best-ever finish on the LPGA Tour.

Amateur Lauren Zaretsky (73) of Thornhill, Ont., was 75th at 1 over and Toronto's Rebecca Lee-Bentham (72) tied for 76th at 2 over.

Golf Canada said that more than 75,000 fans attended Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club over the week, an all-time record for the women's championship and an impressive rebound after it had to be cancelled in 2020 and 2021. Those ticket sales are a 55-per-cent increase over 2017 when the tournament was last at Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club, which was the previous benchmark for the event.

"From fans, from commercials, from amateurs, from our field, it has just been a dream scenario being here for the 2022 CP Women's Open," said Golf Canada CEO Laurence Applebaum, who added that the only way it could have been better was if a Canadian had won the national open.

It was also a boon for Ottawa's beleaguered tourism industry that has not yet recovered from the damage done by the COVID-19 pandemic or the anti-government convoy that occupied Canada's capital in February and March. Tourism Ottawa projected that the golf tournament would have an economic impact of $13.4 million in the region.

Tournament director Ryan Paul said that Ottawa's unique geographic position on the border between two of Canada's most populous provinces was also a benefit.

"Anywhere we can host and bring in from multiple markets is big for us," said Paul. "Bringing this event across the country and bringing it to new markets, whether they be Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa, even Montréal, Regina, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, everywhere we've been has their benefits."

Vancouver's Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club is set to host the CP Women's Open in 2023 after it was set to host cancelled events in 2020 and 2021. No host venue has been named for 2024.

Springer returns to centre field, Hernandez out of Blue Jays’ lineup vs. Angels - Sportsnet.ca

George Springer will return to centre field while Jackie Bradley Jr. will take Teoscar Hernandez's spot in right field when the Toronto Blue Jays take on the Los Angeles Angels Saturday afternoon.

Springer has not started in centre field since July 28 as he has spent time battling elbow and knee injuries. The 32-year-old has been an impact bat when healthy, hitting .276/.352/.484 with 18 home runs in 98 games.

Hernandez fouled a ball off his foot in the first inning before striking out. He then left the game with a left foot contusion and is day-to-day until he gets the injury reassessed.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was also not in the starting lineup while Bo Bichette will be moved up to the cleanup spot in the batting order.

Canada wins but Marti makes "Swisstory" - IIHF

Canada came out firing on all cylinders, providing immediate notice to the Swiss that this would be another grind. Canada’s tenacity in the offensive zone and aggressive puck pursuit between the blue lines all but prevented the Swiss from generating any decent scoring chances. The only exceptions came during two Swiss power plays, but even then they managed only a couple of decent chances, only to be met by the letter perfect goaltending of Desbiens, who was making her second straight start.

Canada got the only goal of the period after several waves of pressure which stifled the Swiss every time they so much as tried to get the puck out over their own blue line. In the end, the puck came onto Filler’s stick in the high slot, and her shot hit something in front and dropped into the net behind Braendli, also making her second straight start.

"I just made a play to Ella and she was wide open up top," Filler described. "She hit me back, and I got a lucky bounce off a couple of shin pads and in. It's nice to get some puck luck early in the game."

The Canadians nearly got another later in the period when Erin Ambrose hit Sarah Potomak with a brilliant stretch pass, setting Potomak in the clear. But Braendli stood her ground and made the save on the deke.

The second featured even greater domination by Canada, to the tune of a 19-1 shots discrepancy. They doubled their lead at 9:40 off more pressure that forced Lisa Ruedi into a turnover in the corner. The puck rolled onto the stick of Fillier, and she beat Braendli with a hard shot to the short side.

A minute and a half later, Canada struck again off another turnover, this one just inside the Swiss blue line. Blayre Turnbull then fed Emily Clark with a nice pass, and her quick shot also eluded Braendli. The Swiss got their best chance late in the period off a Canadian turnover. The dangerous trio of Alina Muller-Lara Stalder-Noemi Ryhner was on, and Muller dropped the puck to Stalder while Ryhner went to the net. The connecting pass was perfect, but Desbiens was rock solid in making her toughest save of the night (and only one of the period).

Marti's historic marker got the Swiss back into the game, and they thought they had scored soon after on a power play, but the whistle had gone before the puck went in because the referee behind the goal had lost sight of the puck. Turnbull salted the win at 18:46 when her shot on a partial break trickled through Braendli's pads and over the goal line.

Alouettes suspend Christophe Normand in response to child luring allegation - CTV News Montreal

The Montreal Alouettes say fullback Christophe Normand has been suspended pending the outcome of a luring investigation.

Normand, a former teacher, faces two charges of luring a child under 18, including one count of luring a child under 16, or who the accused believed was under 16 at the time of the offence.

The offences are alleged to have occurred Aug. 9, 2022.

Provincial police Sgt. Audrey-Anne Bilodeau said both offences involve a single victim.

"To respect all parties involved, we will wait for the end of the investigation," Alouettes president Mario Cecchini said in a release. "As of now, Christophe is suspended until further notice."

Patricia Johnson, a spokeswoman for Quebec's prosecution service, said the 30-year-old Normand was arrested Thursday by Quebec provincial police.

The arrest occurred after police searched his home on Aug. 19.

Normand appeared in court in Granby, Que. on Thursday afternoon and was released with conditions.

There's no evidence that Normand met the alleged victim after he attempted to lure her, Bilodeau said, adding that investigators "confirmed that there would have been no other events where the victim and the accused would have been together except at school last year."

Normand has worked in the off-season as a school teacher since 2015.

Two years ago, according the Montreal Alouettes' website, he started teaching social studies at Monseigneur-Euclide-Theberge High School, his alma mater, in Marieville, Que.

Bilodeau said the investigation has only identified one victim, but police are asking members of the public who have information about the alleged events, or other possible victims, to come forward.

A seven-year veteran in the CFL, Normand is currently in his third season with Montreal.

Blue Jays vs. Angels series preview: Saturday showdown pits Manoah against Ohtani - Sportsnet.ca

The red-hot Toronto Blue Jays are coming home to face two weaker teams after an excellent 6-1 road trip against the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox.

Fresh off their second sweep in a row at Fenway Park, the Blue Jays welcome the Los Angeles Angels to Rogers Centre for a three-game series.

The weekend set features one of the best pitching matchups of the season on Saturday, the same day the Blue Jays will hold a 30th anniversary celebration for their 1992 World Series win.

Here’s a look at the two teams:

Probable pitchers

Friday, 7:07 p.m. ET / 4:07 p.m. PT: Toronto RHP Mitch White (1-3, 3.61 ERA) vs. Los Angeles RHP Reid Detmers (4-4, 3.66 ERA)

Saturday, 3:07 p.m. ET / 12:07 p.m. PT: Toronto RHP Alek Manoah (12-6, 2.66 ERA) vs. Los Angeles RHP Shohei Ohtani 10-8, 2.83 ERA)

Sunday, 1:37 p.m. ET / 10:37 a.m. PT: Toronto RHP Ross Stripling (6-4, 2.84 ERA) vs. Los Angeles LHP Tucker Davidson (2-4, 6.23 ERA)

Latest on the Blue Jays

The Blue Jays (68-55) are a season-high 13 games over .500 after continuing their dominance of the Red Sox this season — Toronto is now 13-3 versus its AL East rival.

The final two wins in the series both came in extra innings.

Thursday’s was a thriller with closer Jordan Romano escaping a bases-loaded jam with no out in the ninth to force a 10th inning.

Cavan Biggio then scored on a great slide to the plate on a grounder to short before Romano returned to lock it down.

The Blue Jays are second in the wild-card race, a half game behind the Tampa Bay Rays and a game ahead of the Seattle Mariners.

Latest on the Angels

It has been a terrible season for the Angels (52-73), who have lost six in a row after getting swept in a four-game series by the Rays.

The Angels, who fired manager Joe Maddon earlier this year after the team lost 12 in a row, fell 8-3 in Thursday’s series finale.

Angels star Mike Trout had a scheduled day off while Ohtani went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts.

It also was a dramatic week off the field for the Angels. Owner Arte Moreno announced he is considering selling the team.

Hot ticket

The Ohtani vs. Manoah matchup Saturday should be plenty of fun — the game is a sellout.

Ohtani, the reigning AL MVP because of his dual-threat pitching and hitting, came out of his last start after four innings with a stomach virus last weekend in Detroit.

Ohtani had a rough outing against the Blue Jays in May, giving up five runs on six hits over six innings.

Manoah, who was sensational in the first half of the season en route to an all-star appearance, hasn’t been quite the same in recent outings, but is still giving his team a chance to win.

Of course, Manoah made headlines in his last start when he hit Yankees slugger Aaron Judge with a pitch, causing tempers to flare. Afterward, he had memorable fighting words for New York pitcher Gerrit Cole.

Bullpen watch

The Blue Jays bullpen is almost certain to be short-handed Friday night.

Toronto used five relievers in each of its past two wins over Boston, including two innings from closer Jordan Romano on Thursday following one inning on Wednesday.

High-leverage guys Tim Mayza and Anthony Bass also pitched each of the past two nights.

It could lead to some interesting decisions for manager John Schneider -- considering Friday's starter, White, is more of a swing guy and hasn't pitched into the sixth inning in any of his three starts for Toronto.

Trout’s back

Trout has now been back in the lineup for a week after missing a month with a back/rib cage injury.

The three-time AL MVP is 7-for-23 (.304) with two homers and three RBI in six games since his return.

Staying away

Angels relievers and former Blue Jays Ryan Tepera and Aaron Loup and outfielder Taylor Ward are on the restricted list (unvaccinated against COVID-19) and not able to cross the border to play this weekend.

Season series

The Blue Jays swept a four-game series in Los Angeles in June, part of the Angels’ losing streak before the firing of Maddon.

The final game was especially memorable with the Blue Jays scoring three in the seventh and two in the eighth to win 11-10. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. drove in five runs that afternoon.

Up next

The Chicago Cubs are in town for three games — and former Blue Jay Marcus Stroman appears in line to make his first appearance in Toronto as a visiting starter on Tuesday.

Blue Bombers use balanced attack to knock off Stampeders - TSN

WINNIPEG — Mike O’Shea was glad the Blue Bombers provided fans with an exciting see-saw battle against the Calgary Stampeders on Thursday, especially when it was Winnipeg who came away with a historic 31-29 victory.

The Bombers (10-1) became the first team in CFL history to record 400 home victories (Calgary sits at 399). They did it in front of 30,062 fans at IG Field, who were also treated to some highlights by the Stampeders.

“I would say it's probably not a classic in terms of when the coaches watch it, but for the CFL fans, I don't think they care about that,” the Bombers head coach said. “That was one hell of a game for the audience.”

Calgary (6-4) receiver Malik Henry caught a trio of touchdowns from second-year quarterback Jake Maier, who was starting for the first time in place of healthy veteran Bo Levi Mitchell.

Henry, who missed the previous two games with an injury, finished with seven catches for 122 yards.

Maier threw an incomplete pass on his first possession in the game, but then completed 15 straight passes. He was 15-of-16 for 194 yards and two touchdowns in the first half, and finished 23-of-28 for 294 yards with no interceptions.

Maier said the offence played well through three quarters but didn’t do enough in the fourth quarter when Winnipeg’s defence turned up its pushback.

“I feel like we didn’t finish well enough, and it starts with me,” he said. “The second or third last drive of the game, took a bad sack, missed a throw, had a couple balls batted down.

“I need to be better in those moments, and we will.”

Winnipeg won all three games versus Calgary this season, giving them a season-series sweep for the first time since 1987. The other victories were also close scores of 26-19 and 35-28.

Bombers quarterback Zach Collaros, who was intercepted twice in the end zone by Stampeders defensive back Brad Muhammad, was 19-of-26 passing for 294 yards and two touchdowns.

“Two great organizations. Two great teams,” Collaros said. “I thought we showed a lot of resiliency.

“I put us in a couple of bad spots and the entire team picked me up, picked the offence up.“

Winnipeg got touchdown catches from receivers Greg McCrae, Nic Demski and Rasheed Bailey. Backup quarterback Dakota Prukop recorded another TD with a two-yard sneak and threw the 10-yard TD strike to Bailey. Marc Liegghio booted a 32-yard field goal and was good on four converts.

Calgary kicker Rene Paredes connected on field goals from 47 and 31 yards and made three converts. The Stampeders also picked up two singles when Winnipeg conceded on punts.

The Bombers led 14-8 after the first quarter. Calgary had an 18-17 edge at halftime and 25-24 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Stampeders head coach Dave Dickenson acknowledged Maier faced a lot of pressure.

“I thought we did a fairly good job staying balanced, working things back and forth,” Dickenson said. “Right (after halftime), we had two plays we could have made big plays on and we didn’t.”

He also agreed with O’Shea that the game was a treat for fans.

“Battle again, back-and-forth, good entertainment but not on our end,” Dickenson said. “We still come out with a loss and that hurts.”

Winnipeg had a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter, but also two injuries to defensive backs.

After Collaros threw a 41-yard TD pass to McCrae at 12:17 on Winnipeg’s opening possession, Calgary responded with Henry’s 61-yard TD catch at the 8:30 mark.

Henry’s run to the end zone was aided by an injury to Bombers cornerback Demerio Houston. As Houston was running to cover Henry, he pulled up and fell to the turf. He limped off the field and didn’t return.

Bombers backup cornerback Patrice Rene was then hurt during coverage of Calgary’s kickoff. He was taken off the field on a cart.

Starting running back Brady Oliveira was on the sidelines with his helmet off in the second half, but O’Shea didn’t have updates on the injured trio.

Oliveira was replaced by Johnny Augustine, who had four key carries for 20 yards on Winnipeg’s last drive of the game that ate up more than two minutes and sealed the victory.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 25, 2022.

Why Blue Jays’ Kevin Gausman may be the unluckiest pitcher in baseball - Sportsnet.ca

BOSTON — Kevin Gausman finished Thursday’s start, his 24th of the waning season in what was eventually a 6-5 Toronto Blue Jays win over the Boston Red Sox in 10 innings, with a perfectly solid 3.15 ERA.

That’s a top-25 mark among qualified MLB starters. He also carries a 23.8 per cent strikeout-minus-walk rate — a statistic Gausman’s Blue Jays value highly — which ranks sixth behind a row of absolute studs in Shane McClanahan, Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, Aaron Nola and Corbin Burnes.

But where Gausman has all those guys beat — every guy in baseball, for that matter — is FIP. As in fielding independent pitching, a stat that measures a pitcher’s performance using outcomes detached from the defence played behind them. Think strikeouts, walks, hit batters, home runs. Gausman’s FIP is 2.01, nearly a quarter run lower than Rodon’s second-place mark. And they’re the only two qualified pitchers below 2.54.

So, a 3.15 ERA vs. a 2.01 FIP — a difference of over a run. Only two other pitchers who’ve thrown at least 100 innings this season — a sample of 94 — have a larger discrepancy. Patrick Corbin, whose ERA is 6.81 and FIP is 5.01. And Lucas Giolito, who’s rocking a 5.14 and a 4.08. Neither of them even close to Gausman’s league.

How does this happen? Well, you strike out a ton of batters (Gausman has a top-10 strikeout rate at 27.7 per cent). You don’t walk many (Gausman’s 3.9 per cent walk rate ranks within MLB’s 96th percentile). You minimize home runs (Gausman’s coughed up only 7 over his 134.1 innings pitched). And you get absurdly unlucky on balls in play (Gausman’s .373 batting average on balls in play is tops among qualified MLB starters, nearly 40 points clear of JT Brubaker in second place, and soaring above the MLB average of .289).

It’s the story of Gausman’s season. Stretches of brilliance interspersed by stretches of unbelievably poor fortune.

“Yeah, pretty much. Unfortunately,” Gausman said when asked if his season had been defined by bad luck. “It sucks to say that. But a lot of groundballs have got through and been hits. A lot of weak contact has led to guys reaching base. I always base my outings off the contact that I get. So, it's tough on nights like tonight.”

It’s tough watching Xander Bogaerts beat a full-count heater straight into the dirt in front of home plate at 78.7-m.p.h. and getting a single off of it. A groundball hit with a -50 degree launch angle is a pretty good indication of a hitter missing badly against a nasty, diving pitch. But that extreme angle also robbed the ball of any speed behind it as it rolled slowly towards Blue Jays third baseman Matt Chapman, who had no hope of an out at first.

It’s tough when, four pitches later, Gausman threw a brilliantly located splitter down-and-away that came off the end of Christian Arroyo’s bat at 65.2-m.p.h. and floated into centre field. The ball was hit so softly that it rolled to a near dead stop 119 feet from home as Bogaerts scampered to third. Two pitches after that, Arroyo was sliding into second with only the sixth stolen base of his six-season career as Danny Jansen bobbled his transfer behind the plate.

It's tough seeing a Reese McGuire flare — exit velocity: 86.9-m.p.h. — fall just out of Teoscar Hernandez’s reach in right, plating Bogaerts. It’s tough that a Bobby Dalbec groundball single against the shift scored Arroyo. Two runs in and the hardest-hit ball in the inning was Dalbec’s at 91.2-m.p.h. Stuff like this doesn’t only happen to Gausman. But it happens to Gausman an awful lot.

“I try to focus on the contact I’m getting. But obviously you want the results and the soft contact. You just feel like you're not getting beat. They're not necessarily earning it. And they are, it's still a hit. But there’s been a lot of ground balls that seem to be finding their way into the outfield,” Gausman said. “All I can really focus on is making better pitches before that happens, you know? Strike a guy out. That’s kind of where I'm at. A lot of the bad stuff that happened tonight, I could've done things earlier in the AB to maybe keep that from happening.”

That’s fair — Gausman wasn’t undone purely by poor luck. His fastball velocity was down 1.5-m.p.h. from his season norm; his splitter was coming in a tick slower than average, too. The Red Sox stole a pair of bases off his high leg-kick delivery. He got beat on some fastballs up, like the full-count one Tommy Pham singled off of in the third. And he didn’t finish a few splitters, like the one Rafael Devers laced to right to plate Pham four pitches later.

But a .529 BABIP on the evening certainly contributed, just as it has all season. Rob Refsnyder began the fourth with a groundball single off the pitcher’s mound, then took off for second in an 0-2 count. Shortening up at the plate, McGuire chopped a changeup on the ground the opposite way, bouncing a dribbler into left field through the spot where a shifted Chapman, who raced to cover Refsnyder’s steal attempt at second, was standing a split-second prior.

That set up a Dalbec sacrifice fly that scored Refsnyder from third. And although Gausman grinded into his third trip through Boston’s order, getting the Blue Jays past the fifth in a tied game, it wasn’t a particularly difficult choice for interim manager John Schneider to lift him at 88 pitches. Gausman knew it, too. He emptied the tank in that fifth, throwing three of his four hardest pitches on the night.

“You know, batting average on balls in play is tough. He’s been unlucky,” Schneider said. “He was grinding a little bit today, I think. And a couple of soft hits and things like that, Reese putting the ball in play with the runner moving there, it kind of sums up his year a little bit.”

Gausman’s diminished velocity, meanwhile, needn’t be a concern unless it becomes a trend over multiple outings. He’s 24 starts into his season now. He’s battling through some things physically, as anyone in his position would be. But he’s given the Blue Jays 30.2 innings of 2.64-ERA ball this month and he’s still got another start to go. With or without his best fastball, Gausman’s found a way through it.

“Some days the velo just comes naturally for me. But it wasn’t as easy today. When I needed it, it was there. But it took a little extra to actually get there, for sure,” Gausman said. “I've definitely felt better than I do right now. But that's part of it. I’ll take my time between outings, maybe tweak some things, give my body a little break. And hopefully five days from now I feel a lot better.”

Meanwhile, the Blue Jays teed off on Kutter Crawford to the tune of four runs on 10 hits, which was just good enough to keep pace with what the Red Sox got off Gausman. And the clubs traded runs in the sixth thanks to a Danny Jansen solo shot and a Jarren Duran double that plated Dalbec, who reached on a two-out Bo Bichette throwing error.

The fabric of space and time came to an abrupt halt right about there, as the Blue Jays and Red Sox took turns burning scoring opportunities in a seventh inning that began on your sixth birthday and an eighth that finished during your college graduation.

Bo Bichette reached second with one out in the top of the ninth but was stranded. The Red Sox loaded the bases with none out in the bottom of the ninth against Jordan Romano but Franchy Cordero struck out and Kike Hernandez grounded into a double-play against a drawn-in, five-man infield.

But the Blue Jays were able to scratch zombie runner Cavan Biggio across in the top of the 10th with a couple groundballs off John Schreiber. Schreiber put a contact play on for the second one with George Springer at the plate and Biggio executed a perfect slide just under the tag of Red Sox catcher Kevin Plawecki. That set up Romano, back out for a second inning and pushing his pitch count up to 28, to retire the side in order in the bottom half and finish things off.

The Blue Jays certainly had their chances to end the game much earlier than that, putting runners on in every inning but the second. And yet, they went 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position and left 13 on base. One of those nights. Not often you come away from them with a win. And not often you come away from a seven-game road trip through Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park with a 6-1 record.

“It was an unbelievable job by the bullpen. Offence came through. Cavan with the contact play at third, doing it correctly and having a fantastic slide at home. Everyone literally contributing today. That was a really good game,” Schneider said. “It’s awesome. There's not a whole lot of runway left in the season. So, to go into New York and [Boston] and win both series and sweep [the Red Sox] in a tough environment, it says a lot about our guys.”

And Gausman’s night said a lot about his year. These things are tricky to measure, but there can’t be a pitcher who’s been as unlucky as him, can there? Sure, his strange season hasn’t all been factors out of his control. His velocity’s fluctuated. He appeared to be tipping at one point. But when he’s been on, he’s really been on. His peripherals are spectacular; the nastiness of his stuff’s apparent. A 3.15 ERA doesn’t happen by accident.

Neither does a 2.01 FIP. And how good does Gausman’s season look if there isn’t that run-wide gap between them? What if some of those shift-beaters he’s fallen victim to aren’t hit the opposite way? What if the Blue Jays play sounder defence behind him? What if a double play is completed here and a ball doesn’t skip off the bag there? What if some of those flares fell grass-blades foul rather than centimetres fair?

Who’s to say. It’s a well-worn baseball saw that a pitcher has no control over what happens once the ball leaves their hand. At least that’s what pitchers tell themselves to blunt the dreadful and persistent adversity the game so often throws at them. And at this point, Gausman’s probably tired of hearing it.

Jays Score 8 in the 3rd, Beat the Red Sox - Bluebird Banter

Blue Jays 9 Red Sox 3

Ross Stripling and 8-run third inning was all the Jays needed today.

The third inning was fun:

  • Jackie Bradley Jr. started things off with a double.
  • We had groundouts from George Springer and Vladimir Guerrero.
  • Lourdes Gurriel doubled, Bradley scored.
  • Alejandro Kirk walked.
  • George Springer singled to center (Enrique Hernandez misjudged the ball (or something), he should have had a fairly easy catch). Gurriel scored.
  • Bo Bichette singled, loading the bases.
  • Matt Chapman walked, bringing in Kirk.
  • Cavan Biggio singled home Hernandez and Bichette.
  • Bradley walked in his second at-bat of the inning.
  • Springer looped one into right, and Rob Refsnyder dove for it, coming up short, turning a single into a bases-clearing triple.
  • Vlad ground out. He made the second and third out of the inning.

And it was 8-0.

Ross Stripling was great again. Maybe not as great as his last start, but 6 innings, 6 hits, 1 earned, 1 walk and 6 strikeouts. He came out of the game at 86 pitches, looking strong. I thought he could have gone longer, but it is August, saving a few bullets for September is not a bad idea. Especially with the team up by 7.

Yusei Kikuchi had a rough time in his second relief outing, walking 3 and hitting a batter, while getting just two outs. He could have been out of the inning. He got the perfect double play ground ball, but Chapman’s throw to Cavan Biggio was low. Cavan did make the catch and got the force at second, but rushed the throw to first and threw wide of the bag.

At first the run was unearned because the runner scored because of the overthrow, but the hit batter and walk that followed would have scored the run without the overthrow.

Of course, it is one of the dumbest lines in the rule book that cost him the earned run. The line “you can’t assume a double play” is one I don’t like. Once you get that out at second, you are no longer “assuming a double play”. You are assuming the throw from second to first should be easy enough to make. But such is baseball. Some rules are dumb.

Anyway, Kikuchi had a really rough time.

David Phelps got the last out of the seventh and pitched a quick eight. It surprised me that he came out again for the ninth (not that there was any reason he shouldn’t have), and he had some troubles, giving up 3 singles and an earned run, getting two outs.

Trevor Richards got the last out of the game.

We got our 9th run in the seventh inning. Bichette crushed a double down the right-field line (111.6 MPH). Nice to see him pull a fastball. He scored on a Bradley single.

We had 13 hits on the day. 7 extra-base hits, 5 doubles and 2 triples. No home runs today.

Everyone in the lineup had a hit, except for Kirk (who took 2 walks). Springer (triple), Guerrero (two doubles, one that was just a couple of feet short of a home run to dead center, listed at 406 feet and 108.8 MPH), Bichette (double), Chapman (triple) and Bradley (double).

The Jays have the six hardest hit balls of the game, and nine hit at 105 MPH or harder.

Jays of the Day: Chapman (.123 WPA) was the only one over .1. Let’s give one to Stripling too (.041) because he was great on the WPA was low because of all the runs scored. We’ll give honourable mention to Springer, Gurriel, Hernandez, Biggio and Bradley.

No one gets the Other Award.

Reese McGuire pitched the ninth for the Red Sox, getting a clean inning, only the second clean inning of the game for Red Sox pitching.

Tomorrow Jose Berrios (9-5, 5.39) goes up again TBD for the Red Sox.

Eldridge scores winner, Canada downs U.S. in world women's championship tuneup - TSN

HERNING, Denmark — Jessie Eldridge scored the winning goal on a power play and Canada defeated the United States 3-1 in a pre-tournament game ahead of the women's world hockey championship.

Sarah Fillier, also on a power play, and Blayre Turnbull had the other goals for Canada.

Lee Stecklein had the lone goal for the U.S.

Canadian starting goaltender Ann-Renee Desbiens allowed one goal on eight shots. Kristen Campbell stopped all 12 shots she faced in relief.

American starter Nicole Hensley allowed two goals on nine shots before giving way to Maddie Rooney, who stopped 4-of-5 shots.

Stecklein opened the scoring 5:50 into the first period, but Turnbull evened the score 2:27 into the second.

“It’s something that our team takes a lot of pride in. We understand how big of a challenge it’s going to be when every team we face is trying to take us down. We’re excited and looking forward to getting the games started,” said Turnbull.

Eldridge gave Canada its first lead just after the midway point of the second with Savannah Harmon in the penalty box for tripping.

Fillier scored an insurance goal 8:44 into the third following an interference penalty to Grace Zumwinkle.

Canada is seeking a third straight major title after winning the 2021 world championship and 2022 Olympic gold medal. Canada defeated the U.S. 3-2 in both previous finals.

"It’s something that our team takes a lot of pride in. We understand how big of a challenge it’s going to be when every team we face is trying to take us down. We’re excited and looking forward to getting the games started,” said Turnbull.

The 2022 world championship begins Thursday, with Canada facing Finland on the opening day.

Golf news: Lucy Lin, 12, earns spot in CP Women's Open | CTV News - CTV News Vancouver

OTTAWA -

She's been described as a "virtuoso," and at age 12, Lucy Lin is also the youngest player ever to qualify for the CP Women's Open.

Lin, who earned one of four qualifying spots in the 2022 golf tournament, played her first round of 18 holes when she was nine. Three years later, she's preparing for the LPGA Tour event in Ottawa.

"I'm really excited to meet all these great players from around the world and try to enjoy the experience," Lin said in an interview with CTV News in the capital Tuesday, after she'd qualified.

Lin's was among the four best qualifying scores out of 22 on Monday, meaning she'll be joining event headliner Brooke Henderson on the course when the tournament opens Thursday. The defending champion headed into the event is 13-time LPGA Tour winner Jin Young Ko.

Lin, a Vancouver resident, earned her spot shooting two over par, just two shots behind Michelle Liu – who was previously the youngest qualifier – and Gianna Clemente, and one shot ahead of Vanessa Zhang.

In 2019, Liu earned her spot in the tournament at 12 years, nine months and six days old. Lin was 12 years, seven months and 12 days old on Monday.

Qualifiers Liu, Lin and Zhang, all from Vancouver, are among 18 Canadians who will be playing in the CP Women's Open.

Ahead of teeing off at the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club, Lin said she's trying to stay focused.

"Sometimes I get nervous but I try to stay patient," she said.

Her strategy is to think only about her own game and how she can improve her swing. She tries not to get distracted.

Lin's mother, Amanda, is her caddy, and joked that she's the secret weapon, but she said her goal for her daughter is just to have fun and take in the experience.

They don't play a lot of tournaments, she said, but described her daughter as a "very natural player."

"She's a very sporty girl … she's good at everything. And when she played the first time, 18 holes, with me three years ago I could see she's a good player," Lin's mother said.

Describing themselves as a good team and good friends, she said they practice every day, but Lin balances that with school, which she does online.

With a laugh, Lin said she learned from watching her mother play and trying to "copy her."

She said she was surprised she made the cutoff, but also that she'd tried not to think about it until it was over, focusing only on her game.

What she loves most about the sport, Lin said, is "hitting every shot. The sound of hitting the ball, making contact."

She said she dreams of becoming a professional golfer, something those who've seen her play believe possible.

"I'm in awe of her. She's a virtuoso – not in the music field but certainly in the golf field," said Michael Hurdzan, a U.S. golf course architect who remodeled the decades-old Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club course where Lin will play in the Open.

"The wonderful thing about it is it's going to inspire other young girls like her to give it a shot, so that's the reason I'm following her and that's why I have great hope that she will make the cut."

Coach Tristan Mullally said thinks she may have what it takes as well.

"She's a very grounded young lady. When you speak to her, you don't imagine she's 12, then when you watch her play, she's got skills and speed that's above her years," Mullally told CTV News Tuesday. He's the head of national talent identification for Golf Canada, and also a part of Lin's coaching team.

"She's in kind of a unique place to be as good as she is for her age," he said.

"She's a very smart kid, takes information on very well, and is very diligent in what she does on a daily basis, so you can see that in how fast she's improved."

Mullally said he knows there can be challenges balancing school and sports at this level, but that Lin's mother treats Lin as "a kid first and an athlete second," and dedicates a lot of time to them.

He said he'd hoped Lin would qualify, after being second at a Canadian Junior Golf Association event a couple weeks ago on the same course, but he knew that it would come down to how she played Monday.

"She did that to get in, she's earned her spot, and it should be fun to watch," Mullally said.

As for what's next, he knows about her aspirations to be a professional, and said he'll do what he can to help her get there as quickly and safely as possible.

"I think when you qualify as the youngest person ever to play in the Canadian Open, that probably says a lot about you and your game. I was fortunate enough to work with Brooke (Henderson) and her family for a long time, and she's got a lot of the same traits, so hopefully the same kind of success in the future," he said.

Series preview: Blue Jays hope to maintain success against Red Sox - Sportsnet.ca

The Toronto Blue Jays look to keep rolling on the road when they play a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.

While the Blue Jays are in the thick of the wild-card race, the Red Sox have faded badly and appear destined to miss the playoffs.

Here’s a look at the series between the AL East rivals.

Probable pitchers

Tuesday, 7:10 p.m. ET / 4:10 p.m. PT: Toronto RHP Ross Stripling (5-3, 2.93 ERA) vs. Boston RHP Josh Winckowski (5-6, 5.19 ERA)

Wednesday, 7:10 p.m. ET / 4:10 p.m. PT: Toronto TBD vs. Boston TBD

Thursday, 7:10 p.m. ET / 4:10 p.m. PT: Toronto TBD vs. Boston TBD

(All games on Sportsnet)

Latest on the Blue Jays

The Blue Jays (65-55) have won four of five in the aftermath of a rough spell, including taking three of four last weekend in New York against the AL East-leading Yankees.

The surge has pushed Toronto into a tie with the Seattle Mariners for the second wild-card spot, a half game back of the Tampa Bay Rays.

As is often the case, starting pitching has been the key to Toronto’s recent success.

The Blue Jays have given up just nine runs in the past five games.

Latest on the Red Sox

The Red Sox (60-62) are six games back of a wild-card spot and appear to be heading toward missing the playoffs for the third time in four seasons.

Boston is coming off a 2-1 series loss to the Baltimore Orioles, capped by a 5-3 setback in the Little League Classic on Sunday in Williamsport, Pa.

After going 20-6 in June, the Red Sox went 8-19 in July and are now 9-10 in August, dropping them to the fringes of playoff contention.

Pitching plans

The Red Sox had hoped to start right-hander Nathan Eovaldi in Tuesday’s series opener. But he has a sore trap muscle, forcing the Red Sox to call up Winckowski from triple-A to start against Toronto.

Welcome back

Longtime Red Sox outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. makes his return to Fenway with the Blue Jays after getting released by Boston earlier this month.

Bradley Jr. had a big two-run double in Toronto’s win in New York on Saturday.

Season series

The Blue Jays have dominated, winning 10 of 13 to date.

The most recent series was a Blue Jays sweep of a three-gamer last month at Fenway Park, highlighted by a historic 28-5 win in the opener.

The Red Sox are 16-32 against the AL East this year.

Up next

The Blue Jays return home for three games against the Los Angeles Angels and then three versus the Chicago Cubs.

Canada blanked by Mexico for first loss at Little League World Series - Sportsnet.ca

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — A site of many historic battles over the years, Matamoros calls itself the city of the undefeated, loyal and heroic.

The Mexican Little League team from that border community — located just south of Brownsville, Texas — showed Canada’s entry in the 75th Little League World Series on Monday that they take the moniker seriously, crushing the previously undefeated Little Mountain Little Leaguers of Vancouver 10-0 with a no-hitter and walk-off hit to end it in the fifth inning.

In a game that started three hours late due to earlier weather issues, both starting pitchers breezed through the first inning. David Zarate of Mexico only needed nine pitches to retire the first three Canadian batters.

But Canada, which had not surrendered a run in earlier wins over Australia (7-0) and Japan (6-0), uncharacteristically came unglued in the bottom of the second inning as pitcher Benjamin (Dart) Dartnell and his Vancouver teammates allowed six runs, committed three errors, overthrew bases and misjudged routine pop flies.

Mexico added two more runs in the third inning when Miguel Padilla hit a towering home run with a teammate on base.

Mexico loaded the bases in the fourth but didn’t score. However, the squad added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth and won the game on the 10-run mercy rule. Mexico stranded eight runners on base in the five-inning game.

The Mexicans, who are one of the teams favoured to win the 2022 title, got stronger at the plate as the game progressed and also showed their defensive chops chasing down everything Canada hit their way. They also had 11 hits and only committed one error.

Mexico will play Taipei City on Wednesday in a battle of powerful 2-0 teams, while Canada (2-1) will face Caribbean Region entry Willemstad, Curaçao on Tuesday at 5 p.m. ET in the modified double-knockout tournament.

Islanders sign RFAs Romanov, Dobson to three-year deals, re-sign Bellows - TSN

The New York Islanders signed restricted free agent defencemen Alexander Romanov and Noah Dobson to three-year deals on Monday.

The team also signed restricted free agent forward Kieffer Bellows to a one-year contract.

TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston reports Romanov's deal will carry an average annual value of $2.5 million, while Kevin Kurz of The Athletic reports Dobson's deal is worth $4 million annually.

Romanov, 22, is entering his first season with the Islanders after being acquired at the 2022 NHL Draft from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for a first-round pick.

He posted three goals and 13 points in 79 games last season with the Canadiens. A second-round pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, Romanov has four goals and 19 points in 133 career games.

Dobson, 22, led all Islanders defencemen in goals (13), assists (38) and points (51) last season and led the team in power-play points (22).

Selected 12th overall by the Islanders in the 2018 draft, Dobson has 17 goals and 72 points in 160 career games.

Bellows, 24, scored six goals and posted 19 points in 45 games last season. A first-round pick of the Islanders in 2016, Bellows has 11 goals and 25 points in 67 career games.

Conners earns spots in FedEx Cup finale, Presidents Cup - TSN

Columnist image

Just call him Clutch Conners.

When he needed to deliver at the BMW Championship, Corey Conners found another gear with his golf game, making birdies on three of his last four holes to earn his spot in the field at next week’s Tour Championship.

Conners’ roller-coaster round added up to a two-under 69, leaving him in a tie for fifth spot. He’ll head to the season finale ranked 24th out of the 30 entrants.

“It's always a goal at the start of the year,” said Conners, who will make his third appearance at the Tour Championship. “I feel like I've had a solid season. Still trying to get in the winner's circle again, but a lot of really solid play, giving myself some chances, and really excited to be going back to East Lake.”

The Listowel, Ont., native had a bumpy start, making bogeys on the first two holes of his round. He clawed those back with birdies on the fourth and fifth holes before stumbling again at the 13th, when he missed the green on the par 3, and 14th, when he three-putted on the par 5. Those two bogeys had him at 30th on the moving FedEx Cup points list and in danger of missing the final event on the tour’s calendar.

But he rallied with three birdies over the next four holes, draining a 14-foot putt on the 15th and then hitting silky wedge shots on 16 and 18 to less than a foot.

Being among the final 30 comes with some healthy rewards, not the least of which is a big payday. The winner takes home $18 million while finishing in 30th spot is still worth $500,000.

As well, it gets Conners into three of the four majors, World Golf Championship events and invitationals.

There was another reward that came Conners’ way at the end of play – a spot on the International Team for the Presidents Cup. The top eight players on the points list at the conclusion of the BMW Championship were named to the team. Four more will be selected next Monday by captain Trevor Immelman.

Conners will become the fourth Canadian to play in the competition, joining Graham DeLaet, Adam Hadwin and Mike Weir, who will be a captain’s assistant this year.

“Again, another huge goal of mine after missing out last time,” said Conners, who was under consideration for the 2019 team. “Beyond excited. I think Trevor has been great trying to get the guys together, and he's a great captain. Easy guy to get behind and really motivating.”

Immelman has been vocal in his support of Conners and has talked to him regularly throughout the season. He’s also counting on the Canadian to be a presence in the team room despite this being his first time in the event.

“I'm pretty quiet, I guess,” admitted Conners. “I'll be a rookie, but I'll try and be one of the leaders on the team, lead more by example, and hopefully play some good golf and let that take care of things.”

The Presidents Cup will be held Sept. 22-25, at Quail Hollow Golf Course in Charlotte, N.C.
