Canada announces 25-man roster for 2021 World Junior Hockey Championships - Sportsnet.ca

Hockey Canada has announced the 25-man roster that will look to defend gold at the 2021 World Junior Hockey Championships.

The roster was selected from an original pool of 46 players who attended a selection camp in Red Deer, Alta., that began in late November. The camp was interrupted for two weeks by a quarantine, after two players tested positive for COVID-19, and resumed earlier this week with two final intrasquad games that helped determine the final cuts.

“This camp has been unconventional from the outset with the number of players invited and the length of camp, along with the schedule adjustment due to our two-week shutdown, but we feel we have selected a group that will give us the best chance to defend our gold medal on home ice,” Alan Millar, the U20 lead for the Program of Excellence management group, said in a statement. “It is never easy making decisions to trim down a roster, especially when every player handled adversity, faced challenges head on and remained committed to the process through our off-ice workouts and Zoom sessions.

“We have a lot of people to thank, including the people of Red Deer, the Red Deer Rebels (WHL) and Alberta Health Services, who worked with us to always ensure the health of safety of our athletes, staff and the community at large, and we look forward to representing Canada in Edmonton.”

The roster features 14 forwards, eight defencemen and three goalies, with six players returning from last year’s gold-medal winning team. All 14 forwards and six of the eight defencemen were first-round picks in the NHL.

Nine players were cut Friday as part of the final roster composition: forwards Seth Jarvis, Mavrik Bourque, Samuel Poulin, Jamieson Rees, Graeme Clarke and Gage Goncalves; and defencemen Donovan Sebrango, Lukas Cormier and Ryan O’Rourke.

All 10 teams competing in the tournament will need to report to Edmonton, where the tournament will be hosted in a bubble similarly to this summer’s NHL playoffs, on Sunday, with pre-tournament play beginning next weekend. Canada opens the tournament on Dec. 26 against Germany.
