Toronto Blue Jays show off plans for next big Rogers Centre renovation - Toronto Sun

While many are expecting some big changes on the field at Rogers Centre for the Toronto Blue Jays with the MLB trade deadline looming, the team on Thursday announced changes off the field.

Rogers Centre will be getting yet another facelift in its never-ending quest to give fans a great ballpark experience. This time, the team has announced changes for the 100 level as part of the next phase of renovations.

At the end of the 2023 season, the entire 100 level seating bowl will be demolished and then “rebuilt to introduce a modern ballpark experience designed specifically for baseball viewing, bringing Blue Jays fans even closer to the action,” according to a release from the team.

The team previously had announced in April the coming addition of three new premium clubs and seating sections.

According to the release, new key features for the 100 level include:

— A more comfortable experience with additional legroom, modern-shaped seats with slats on the back that provide more airflow, wider seats between the dugouts, cupholders throughout, adaptable raisable armrest options, and handrails in every aisle.

— Greater variety of seating options, including different vantage points from new sections, accessible field level seats, plus the previously announced premium seating experiences.

— A design specifically for baseball viewing with seats oriented towards the infield, improved sightlines with less obstruction and new seats closer to the action as a result of the remodelled bowl structure.

“Our goal from the onset of renovations was to transform Rogers Centre from a stadium to a ballpark, and we are excited to build off the enthusiasm and popularity of the new Outfield District in this next phase of projects,” team president and CEO Mark Shapiro said in the release.

“By completely rebuilding the 100 level seating bowl, we are introducing an authentic ballpark viewing experience, with sightlines designed specifically for fans to enjoy Blue Jays baseball.”

During the previous off-season, Rogers Centre underwent several big renovations in the outfield areas of the stands, including massive improvements in the 500 level and around the bullpens areas, also changing the outfield fence.

Summer McIntosh wins gold, repeats as world champ in 200m butterfly - CBC Sports

Canada's Summer McIntosh retained her world title in the women's 200-metre butterfly final on Thursday at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.

The 16-year-old swimmer from Toronto finished in two minutes, 4.06 seconds — a new Canadian and world junior record.

Australia's Elizabeth Dekkers took silver in 2:05.46, while American Regan Smith claimed bronze in 2:06.58.

After the medal ceremony, McIntosh told CBC Sports reporter Devin Heroux that her game plan was to keep things light.

"Going into this race I knew I'd [won] world champion last year, and that was kind of unexpected for me," she said. "I was just trying to have as much fun as possible and race as hard as I could – and just try to hold on in that second half, [which] is so hard in the 200 fly.

"Overall I'm happy with what I accomplished tonight."

Summer McIntosh of Toronto captured the gold medal in the 200m Butterfly final setting a new Junior World Record with the time of 2:04.06.

Thursday's win also continued McIntosh's "bounceback" from a disappointing fourth-place finish in the women's 400m freestyle final earlier in the week.

"After that [400m freestyle final], I knew I had to turn things around quickly as I had so many other events I was looking forward to, and I wasn't going to let it get me down," she said. "I was just really excited because 200 fly is one of my favourite events.

"It's all about mindset, especially at these long meets."

McIntosh later joined the Canadian 4x200m freestyle relay team of Mary-Sophie Harvey, Emma O'Croinin, Brooklyn Douthwright as they finished in fifth place with a time of 7:49.98.

Australia took the gold in a world-record time of 7:37.50, while the U.S. (7:41.38) and China (7:44.40) took silver and bronze, respectively.

Kylie Masse finished fourth in the women's 50m backstroke final, while Canadian teammate Ingrid Wilm finished sixth.

Masse, of LaSalle, Ont., finished in a personal best of 27.28 seconds, just behind bronze-medal winner Lauren Cox (27.20).

Nigeria's win sets stage for massive Canada-Australia matchup on Monday - TSN

Group B was labelled the "group of death" heading into the 2023 Women's World Cup and it's living up to the name heading into the final games.

With all four teams in the group having played two games, Canada and Nigeria sit at four points, while Australia has three as they all fight for the two spots in the Round of 16.

Following a 3-2 win over Australia on Thursday, Nigeria appears to have the best look at the knockout round, with their final game coming against already-eliminated Ireland on Monday morning.

Nigeria and Canada are tied on goal differential at plus-1, while Australia is even entering their final game. Australia scored their second goal Thursday at 90'+10, stopping Nigeria from taking the goal differential advantage into the final matchday.

Canada and Australia will go head-to-head Monday, in a game that could see one of the two sides eliminated from the tournament. A draw or win would see Canada advance, will Australia would need three points to ensure their place in the knockout rounds.

Should two teams be tied on points and goal differential, the third tiebreaker is goals scored at the tournament. Nigeria has the advantage there with three goals, while Canada has two and Australia, still a point back, has three. 

Canada entered the tournament as the highest-ranked team in Group B at No. 7. Australia is ranked No. 10, with Ireland at No. 22. The Super Falcons appear likely to see their ranking rise after the World Cup, having come in ranked 40th in the world. 
 

Canada's win proves key in standings

Canada rallied from an Ireland goal just four minutes in on Wednesday to pick up a crucial 2-1 victory entering their final game.

"I said to (the players) at the end it could be the making of us," Canada coach Bev Priestman said of the comeback. "We wobbled in the first half. Our bravery wasn't there. I felt we played a little bit scared.

"I reminded them at halftime that we're Olympic champions and that we've got to take a step forward and be brave and get after this. It's not going to be easy. I think the quality, the experience that came about in the second half, that's the type of performance that we need moving forward. These moments build character and experience that you can build upon now."

Australia defeated Ireland 1-0 in their opening game at Women's World Cup before being upset on Thursday.
