Hot putter gives Henderson lead at LPGA major - TSN

Columnist image

Brooke Henderson is playing crêpes golf at the Amundi Evian Championship in France this week.

Through two rounds, the Canadian golfer leads the LPGA Tour’s fourth major of the season by three shots after a second consecutive round of 64 on Friday.

The reason for her fast start?

"I've been having a lot of crêpes in France," she said, a smirk punctuating her comment. "To keep the momentum going, I'd better have some more.”

As she did in the opening round, Henderson got off to a fast start, making birdies on her first two holes. She bookended the day well, closing out her round with birdies on the last three holes as well. Overall, she had eight birdies against just a single bogey on her card.

“It feels really nice to get off to a fast start in a major championship. Feels like it's been a while. To get it this far under par is really awesome,” said Henderson. “And I feel like I'm hitting the ball really well, which is nice. Making some putts. So, two solid days, and I'm just really looking forward to the weekend.”

Henderson leads Nelly Korda by three shots. Sei Young Kim and So Yeon Ryu are five shots off the pace in a tie for third.

This marks the second time in Henderson’s career that she’s fired back-to-back 64s. The last time was at the 2019 Meijer LPGA Classic, which she went on to win. While she’s giving lots of credit to the French delicacy for her play, it’s more likely her putting that is the reason for her 14-under-par score.

Over 36 holes, she’s averaged just 27 putts per round. Normally the putter is the weak link in Henderson’s otherwise stellar game. Two months ago, looking for some help on the greens, she elected to change her grip, reversing the position of her hands so her left hand is lower. That’s proved successful as she earned a win at the Shoprite LPGA Classic in June and has been inside the top 16 in her last four starts.

When the 24-year-old putts well, she is usually in the hunt for a win. In her 11 victories on tour, Henderson has averaged 28 putts per round. So far this week, she used her putter 26 times on Thursday and 28 on Friday.

“The putter has been hot for me the last couple months,” said the 24-year-old, “and it's a really great feeling. It's nice to have a little bit of momentum. I won a couple months ago, had some nice top finishes in majors again a few months ago. Had nice time off. I'm ready, back here, and looking forward to the rest of this week and the following two weeks. First time at the Scottish and then the British.”

Henderson has made it clear that she has targeted the majors on her calendar. Despite being one of the game’s top players, she’s only managed a single major title in her list of accomplishments. She’s hoping she can change that this week.

“It would be amazing to get my second major championship, and hopefully I get a few more before my career is over,” she stated. “I feel like this is a great position after two days, and it's only half over, so see what happens.”

Poll: Who Does Matthew Tkachuk Get Traded To? - prohockeyrumors.com

Calgary Flames forward Matthew Tkachuk’s arbitration date on August 11 looms, but we know now that it’s only a matter of time before he suits up for another NHL team. Tkachuk told the Flames this week that he won’t re-sign long-term, either forcing a trade now or letting him walk for nothing as an unrestricted free agent next summer. With teams having spent a lot already during the free agency period, though, does a good Tkachuk trade exist with a team that he’s willing to stay with?

It’s a rarity that a restricted free agent is able to force a change of scenery like this, especially one of Tkachuk’s caliber. Easily one of the top wingers in the league (and top forwards in general), his unique fiery brand and 100+ point scoring potential is an incredibly valuable package. He finished the 2021-22 campaign with 42 goals, 62 points, and 104 points, all career highs, and received votes for the Hart and Selke Trophies.

He’ll be on his way out of Calgary, though, joining ex-teammate Johnny Gaudreau as marquee players to leave the team this summer. Having grown up in St. Louis, and with his father Keith still working for the team, a potential union between the Blues and Tkachuk has been a long-standing open secret. The Blues have been reported to be in talks with Calgary about Tkachuk, and it was also reported that St. Louis was on the small list of teams Tkachuk would accept a trade to.

While the report was contested and isn’t verified, Vegas, Florida, Nashville, and Dallas were also all teams that Tkachuk would sign a long-term deal with. While the cap situation for most of those teams isn’t favorable, Nashville and Dallas do have some more wiggle room than the rest in terms of tradeable assets that would head the other way.

So, PHR readers — where does Tkachuk end up to begin the 2021-22 season? Does he finally head home to St. Louis, does a dark horse team sweep him up, or is the relationship between him and Calgary somehow salvaged?

Why the Blue Jays should trade for Soto - TSN

Columnist image

Last weekend, big news broke out of Washington that the Nationals had a massive 15-year $440 million contract offer rejected by young superstar outfielder Juan Soto.

There were also reports that Soto and his agent, Scott Boras, believed Washington’s offer to be about $100 million short of the appropriate value. It has become clear to the Nationals ownership and front office that they aren’t going to be able to sign their young slugger. So, they made the contract offer public via the media and then made it clear they would likely trade the 23-year-old.

This was the second major Soto negotiation the Nationals have had with Boras. Previously, Washington offered $350 million over 13 years. The only difference is that Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said the team had no intention of trading Soto after the first round of failed negotiations. At that point, they figured they would likely make another offer and just wanted to regroup. They may have even believed that they knew what it would take ultimately to make a deal.

The other thing to keep in mind is that the club is up for sale, so the Nationals brass may have wanted to discuss whether the team would be more valuable with Soto signed to an extraordinary deal or whether trading him for multiple impact prospects was the better way to go.

The direction is now clear. The Nationals aren’t going to sign Soto and he will be traded, most likely before the deadline on Aug. 2.

Soto will not be a free agent until after the 2024 season, so if the Nats don’t hear the offer they were hoping for at the trade deadline, they could pull back and wait until the off-season to trade him. Any team acquiring the right fielder now would potentially have him for three playoff runs before he hits free agency. His value will never be higher than it is right now. It is going to take a significant package of talent to make the deal.

There are going to be more than a handful of teams with interest. Because Soto won’t be a free agent for two and a half more years, any team that truly believes they are playoff worthy this year or next will likely make an offer. It doesn’t matter whether they think they can sign him for the long term. He isn’t going to sign before becoming a free agent anyway. So, if he can help a team get to the playoffs, he is worth acquiring now.

This includes the Toronto Blue Jays. My initial thought was that he didn’t make sense for Toronto, but I have changed my mind. Soto in the same batting order as George Springer, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette and Teoscar Hernandez would create a fearsome lineup. Soto’s extraordinary patience and plate discipline would be extremely helpful for Guerrero, Bichette and Hernandez. His approach could rub off on the rest of the lineup, which is a perfect fit for a player of Soto’s age and experience.

My initial hesitancy for the Jays stemmed from the reality that they likely couldn’t sign Soto and still sign Guerrero and Bichette and Hernandez for the long term. But so what? Having Soto may provide the Jays options on how to spend their money.

And even if Soto goes to free agency, the two-plus years he will have played in Toronto could provide the incentive for him to want to re-sign there as a free agent. If the Jays realize they can’t sign Guerrero to a long-term deal, they could sign Soto and let Guerrero walk away. Toronto likely can’t afford both, but it is good to have options.

The other thing to remember is that two-plus years is a long time. If the Jays were to acquire  Soto in the next 10 days, there is nothing that says they couldn’t trade him down the road. Of course, the hope would be that they would get him for three playoff runs on the way to three World Series championships. But if things don’t go the way the Jays hope, they could always trade him at the deadline next year, or the year after, or anytime in between.

So, what are we really talking about?

Make the trade to acquire him and let him lead you to compete for three straight championships or cut your losses at any time and recoup some or all of the prospects it took to acquire him in the first place. The difference between the acquisition cost and what they could get back later if they decide to trade him is well worth the opportunity to chase a World Series or two.

What would it take to get Soto from the Nationals? I have seen so many different opinions. Some of the speculative trade offers I have seen from media members have been outrageous. Soto is very good, but this is not a Herschel Walker situation. Walker was a former Dallas Cowboy running back who was traded to the Minnesota Vikings in 1989 in a deal that ultimately included 18 players and draft picks.

Last year at the trade deadline, the Nationals traded veteran ace pitcher Max Scherzer, who was a free agent at the end of the season, and All-Star infielder Trea Turner, who had one more season of control, to the Dodgers for two blue-chip prospects (starting pitcher Josiah Gray and catcher Keibert Ruiz).  Soto may cost more than two blue-chip prospects, but not that much more.

The Jays would likely have to include infielder Orelvis Martinez (currently in Double-A New Hampshire), plus catcher Gabriel Moreno and pitcher Nate Pearson (both currently in Triple-A Buffalo) and possibly Cavan Biggio. Yes, it’s a significant package that would hurt some, but you don’t get a superstar for nothing.

After making the Soto deal, I would trade a package built around outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr., who has two years of control left after this season, to acquire pitching.

Gurriel may get the Jays a package that includes starting pitcher Martin Perez and reliever Joe Barlow or Brock Burke from the Texas Rangers. Or maybe he could help the Jays get starting pitcher Noah Syndergaard and relievers Aaron Loup and Ryan Tepera from the Los Angeles Angels. Or lefty relievers Gregory Soto and Andrew Chafin and righty Michael Fulmer from the Detroit Tigers, who need offence. Or starting pitcher Pablo Lopez from the Miami Marlins.

This has a chance to be a remarkable trade deadline. The Soto sweepstakes have everyone drooling because he is such a difference maker. The Jays can be in the mix, but they will have to beat out the Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, Dodgers, Giants, and Mariners, among others, to get him.

Police in London, Ont., reviewing investigation of sexual assault claims after 2018 Hockey Canada event - CBC.ca

The London Police Service in Ontario says it's re-examining allegations of sexual assault involving some members of the 2018 world junior hockey team who attended a Hockey Canada gala, a case it initially closed without pressing charges.

Police Chief Steve Williams said Wednesday that due to significant public interest, he is directing an internal review to determine whether anything was missed.

The announcement comes about a week after Hockey Canada offered an apology and a series of announcements in an open letter. The organization said it's reopening its own investigation, through a third party, into the allegations by a woman who claimed she was sexually assaulted in a room at the Delta Armouries hotel in London by some members of the gold-medal-winning team.

Williams said the police investigation lasted eight months, wrapping up in February 2019.

"To ensure due diligence, given the serious nature of this allegation, I have directed that an internal review of the investigation be conducted to determine what, if any, additional investigative avenues may exist," the chief said in a statement.

The woman who made the assault allegations is now 24 years old. She was seeking $3.55 million in damages from Hockey Canada, the Canadian Hockey League and the unnamed players.

The complainant, now 24, claims she was sexually assault in a room at the Delta Armouries hotel in London in June 2018. (Wikipedia Commons)

Hockey Canada quietly settled the case out of court in June and details of the settlement have not been made public.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.

Since the revelation of the settlement, Hockey Canada has lost its major sponsors and has had its government funding frozen

At the time, Hockey Canada had hired Toronto law firm Henein Hutchison LLP to conduct its investigation. During a parliamentary standing committee meeting, Hockey Canada president Scott Smith said players were "strongly encouraged" to participate in the investigation, but it was not mandated.

Earlier this week, it was uncovered in court documents that the sport's governing body had a legal fund set aside for uninsured liabilities, including cases of sexual assault. That's resulted in further criticism, including from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who called the fund "unacceptable." Since then, Hockey Canada has said it will no longer use the fund, which is maintained by membership fees, to settle sexual assault claims.

In its announcements this week about reopening the third-party investigation, Hockey Canada said it will make it mandatory for players to participate in it.

Williams said London police will start their review immediately, adding there is no timeline for its completion.

Johnny Gaudreau writes letter to Calgary after leaving Flames in free agency - CBC.ca

Johnny Gaudreau says he was always open to staying with the Calgary Flames.

The draw of being closer to family, however, became too strong.

The star winger penned a piece in The Players' Tribune published Wednesday where he tried to explain his decision to leave the only NHL team he'd ever known for the Columbus Blue Jackets in free agency.

Gaudreau said his mind wasn't made up that he would be leaving Calgary, even after rejecting an eight-year contract extension before hitting the open market.

"I still thought about going back and trying to work on a seven-year deal to stay," he wrote. "It was all on the table for the entire process.

"Maybe that seems messy but life is messy, you know?"

In laying out what contributed to his decision to bolt southern Alberta for Ohio, the 28-year-old, who grew up in New Jersey, said the notion of "just hopping on a plane" to see loved ones isn't as easy as people think for an NHL player.

Gaudreau signed a seven-year, $68.25 million US contract with Columbus last Wednesday after positing 40 goals and 115 points in 82 games with Calgary in 2021-22.

"I'm incredibly grateful to be an NHL player, and to be making the salary that I make," Gaudreau wrote. "I don't take it for granted for a second. Which contributes to why money was not the main deciding factor for me. But the idea that Meredith (his wife who's expecting the couple's first child) and I can just fly to and from home, or have our loved ones visit no problem, because we have money?

"It's not that simple. Our families still work full-time. Our siblings have their own lives. Our nieces and nephews are in school. It's a tough trip for folks to make, and it's only gotten tougher with the pandemic."

Drafted by Calgary in the fourth round of the 2011 draft, Gaudreau called leaving "the toughest decision I've ever had to make."

He departed Calgary having scored 210 goals and 609 points in 602 regular-season games. Gaudreau added 33 points in 42 playoff appearances.

"I cherished the time I spent in Calgary," Gaudreau wrote in The Players' Tribune. "For a long time, Meredith and I saw our future there. We wanted to re-sign last summer. We were looking at homes to start a family. But it just didn't work out and we thought this summer might be different.

"But that doesn't change the way I feel right now. I'm so proud to have been on this team, and to have represented this city. And these last few weeks I've been struggling every time I think about that. All of the relationships we've built here, all the amazing friendships we have — I could feel those in my chest every time I thought about leaving."

AL beats NL for ninth straight time, Stanton claims MVP at 2022 MLB All-Star Game - Sportsnet.ca

LOS ANGELES -- Giancarlo Stanton homered in his Dodger Stadium homecoming, Byron Buxton followed with another drive and the American League won its ninth straight All-Star Game, beating the National League 3-2 on Tuesday night.

Byron Buxton followed with another drive and the American League won its ninth straight Midsummer Classic, beating the National League 3-2 on Tuesday night.

AL manager Dusty Baker reminded his team of the winning streak before the game.

“We had to hold it down for him and keep it going,” Stanton said.

Fans rooting for a tie score after nine innings so they could see a first-time home run derby decide it instead of extra innings didn't get their wish.

Instead, the back-to-back homers in the fourth inning were the difference as the AL boosted its overall edge to 47-43-2.

Facing 11-game winner Tony Gonsolin of the Dodgers, Stanton's impressive 457-foot, two-run shot landed in the left-field pavilion, not far from where the L.A. native watched games as a youngster.

“He smokes them,” NL manager Brian Snitker said. “Big, strong kid.”

Stanton and his father, Mike, would sit out there after buying tickets off scalpers for whatever price they could afford.

“My Pops took me to my first Dodger game, showed me how to have love for this game and now we’re here,” the New York Yankees slugger said. “Look at us, it’s just incredible.”

Despite his love for the home team, Stanton thrilled at seeing the visiting sluggers.

“It was really the big boppers when they came into town,” he said. “I wanted to see (Mark) McGwire, (Sammy) Sosa and (Barry) Bonds, even if it was two at-bats. All that wraps around full circle.”

Stanton was chosen the game's MVP, receiving a glass bat engraved with his name from two-time MVP Steve Garvey and Billie Jean King, part of the Dodgers ownership.

“It hasn’t fully sank in,” he said. “It’s going to be an amazing memory for all of our lives.”

The homer ended Stanton's career 0 for 7 skid in the game and at 111.2 mph, it was the hardest-hit homer in an All-Star Game tracked by Statcast. Also scoring was José Ramírez, tying the game 2-all.

Four pitches later, Buxton went deep to give the AL a 3-2 lead against a clearly frustrated Gonsolin, who took the loss.

Nine-time All-Star Clayton Kershaw got the first start of his career for the NL in his home ballpark, with the Dodgers hosting for the first time since 1980. Los Angeles Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani got the game's first hit on Kershaw's first pitch.

Framber Valdez of Houston got the win, tossing a scoreless third inning.

AL starter Shane McClanahan of Tampa Bay gave up two runs and four hits. The first-time All-Star, who owns an MLB-leading 1.71 ERA, had allowed four hits or fewer in his last seven starts.

McClanahan combined with 10 other pitchers on the five-hitter. Cleveland closer Emmanuel Clase put on quite a show, striking out the side in the ninth to earn the save.

Austin Riley’s single in the eighth was the NL’s only hit after the first inning.

Ohtani led off for the AL as the designated hitter. Interviewed moments before the start, the Japanese superstar admitted he was going to swing. He cracked a 91-mph fastball into center field on the first pitch.

"I was definitely swinging a hundred percent," Ohtani said through a translator. "Kershaw has really good command."

His hit snapped an 0 for 8 streak as a hitter against Kershaw. Last year, Ohtani was the starting pitcher and led off as the DH in the AL's 5-2 win at Denver. He didn't pitch this year so he can start Friday in the Angels' first game after the break at Atlanta.

"I mean, you can't throw the first pitch of an All-Star Game as a breaking ball," Kershaw said. "You kind of had to give him a heater there, I think just for everything. Had to do it."

But the three-time NL Cy Young Award winner had the last word. Kershaw fired a pickoff throw to first that caught Ohtani off the bag.

"Honestly, I didn't know quite know what to throw yet. Sometimes I throw over there for a second to be convicted with the pitch," Kershaw said. "I wasn't trying to pick him off. I was trying to delay the game for a bit, but it worked out."

Then Yankees slugger Aaron Judge went down swinging. After Rafael Devers walked, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. grounded into a fielder's choice, and Kershaw walked off to applause from the appreciative crowd.

"I tried to take a minute at the beginning to take it all in and look around, which I usually never do," Kershaw said. "It kind of calmed everything down for me and then I had a lot of fun."

The NL wasted no time in taking its first 2-0 lead in 10 years. Styling in yellow spikes and alternate yellow and red sleeves, Ronald Acuna Jr. led off the bottom of the first with a ground-rule double to left and scored on Mookie Betts' single. Paul Goldschmidt hit a solo homer with two outs.

In between runs, AL second baseman Andres Gimenez made a defensive stop on Manny Machado and followed with a dazzling behind-the-back toss to shortstop Tim Anderson, who threw to first to complete the double play.

A sellout crowd of 52,518 filled Dodger Stadium two years after the third-oldest ballpark in the majors was supposed to host before the game was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Toronto Blue Jays ace Alek Manoah dominated on the mound -- and on the mic -- while pitching a scoreless second inning for the American League. Manoah provided plenty of entertainment as he struck out three hitters

Mic'd up for FOX's TV broadcast, Manoah provided plenty of entertainment as he struck out three NL hitters -- William Contreras, Joc Pederson and Ronald Acuna Jr. -- and he also hit Jeff McNeil of the New York Mets in-between.

"Three punchies! Let's go!'' Manoah yelled into the mic provided by FOX TV as he ran off the mound after striking out Acuna to end the inning.

Manoah threw to his Toronto teammate, catcher Alejandro Kirk, while Guerrero Jr. played first.

The game also featured Jays' second baseman Santiago Espinal, who went 0-1 at the plate and drew a walk. Reliever Jordan Romano was on deck to pitch had Emmanuel Clase of the Cleveland Guardians faltered in the ninth. He struck out all three batters he faced.

Guerrero went 0-for 2 at the plate, grounding into a fielder's choice in the first inning, and popped out to deep centre in the fourth.

HERE'S TO YOU, MS. ROBINSON

Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts, with all of the other All-Stars bunched behind him, led the crowd in sending out 100th birthday wishes to Rachel Robinson. On his 1-2-3 count, the crowd and players shouted "Happy birthday, Rachel!'' The widow of Jackie Robinson didn't travel from her home in New York. She visited Dodger Stadium in April on Jackie Robinson Day to mark the 75th anniversary of her husband breaking baseball's colour barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Jackie Robinson's achievement was honoured with on-field comments by Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington and a presentation on the video boards.

FIRST PITCH

Backed by a mariachi band, Dodgers great Fernando Valenzuela tossed out the ceremonial first pitch. Fittingly, first-time All-Star Alejandro Kirk of Toronto served as catcher. Kirk and Valenzuela were both born in Mexico. Fernandomania gripped the Dodgers in 1981, when the left-hander won Rookie of the Year and the Cy Young Award in helping LA win the World Series.

FASHION CRITICS

The reviews were mostly negative for the second straight year on the All-Star uniforms. The AL wore dark gray uniforms that blended into plate umpire's black shirt and dark gray pants. The NL wore all-white uniforms. Both had gold lettering. Fans were critical on social media, with "atrocious'' a frequent critique. Last year, MLB went away from wearing traditional jerseys, which met with heavy online criticism.

THE SHIFT IS STILL ON

Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman batted in the third to the now familiar chants of "Freddie! Freddie!'' Even in the exhibition game, an extreme shift was on and he was thrown out from right field. Home Run Derby champion Juan Soto got thrown out by the third baseman playing much closer to second base to end the fifth. Next season, the shift is going away.

TAKING IT EASY

Hall of Fame announcer Vin Scully, the voice of the Dodgers for 67 years before retiring in 2016, watched the game from his Los Angeles home. The Bronx-born 94-year-old began calling games when the franchise was located in Brooklyn and followed the team west ahead of the 1958 season.

UP NEXT

The regular season resumes with six games on Thursday, including Stanton, Judge and the Yankees playing a doubleheader at Houston. The Yankees own the best record in the majors at 64-28. Jose Altuve, Yordan Alvarez and Baker's Astros have the second-best mark in the AL at 59-32.

“I just regret that we have to play him a doubleheader on Thursday,” Baker said. “But for today, we’re on the same side.”

Also, it will be Freeman, Betts, Trea Turner and the Dodgers, topping the NL at 60-30, hosting the Giants.
