Three Thoughts From the Celtics' Game 1 Win Over the Raptors - Sports Illustrated

The Celtics jumped out to a 19-point lead by halftime in their blow out win over the Raptors in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.

• As anticipated series openers go, this one was a dud: The Raptors and Celtics entered the Eastern Conference semifinals white hot. Boston was the only one that stayed that way, beating Toronto 112-94 in Sunday's Game 1. The Celtics led wire-to-wire, building a 19-point first half lead that Toronto couldn’t recover from. Jayson Tatum (21 points) and Marcus Smart (21) led the way, two of six Boston players in double-figures. On August 7, the Celtics shellacked the Raptors by 22. They nearly matched that on Sunday

What happened to Toronto? The Raps have a history of playing poorly in Game 1’s, but this was ugly. The vaunted Toronto defense was shredded in this one. Boston shot 47% from the floor and 43.6% from three. Corner threes were a huge problem for the Raptors. Boston’s drive-and-kick offense found wide open shooters in the corners, with Tatum, Smart, Jaylen Brown and Brad Wanamaker knocking them. Toronto couldn’t get anything of their own going from behind the arc, finishing shooting 25%. The smaller Celtics out-rebounded the Raptors (50-40) and matched them in points in the paint (38). Boston’s center rotation of Daniel Theis and Robert Williams: 23 points, 20 rebounds.

• Paging, Pascal Siakam: How worried should the Raptors be about Siakam? The All-Star forward submitted another clunker, a foul filled 13-point (on 5-16 shooting) effort. Nick Nurse has pushed back on the concern about Siakam, but after an uneven stretch of seeding games and a first round with only one game shooting above 43%, there has to be some concern. The Raptors played through Siakam in the post, but Boston’s string of sturdy wing defenders—Smart, Brown and Semi Ojeleye—forced Siakam into tough shots. Nurse has said it: Toronto needs Siakam to be a shot maker. He’ll have to do it against a Celtics team that plays excellent perimeter defense.

• Kemba Watch: The Boston bench collectively gasped when Kemba Walker came up favoring his left leg after twisting it defending a drive by Siakam. Walker’s knee problems date back to February, when he missed time after the All-Star break. They lingered throughout the hiatus, with the Celtics keeping Walker on a minutes restriction during the seeding games. Walker shook off the injury, started the second half and finished with 18 points. But that knee has been troublesome. It’s worth watching how Walker responds before Tuesday’s Game 2.

Raptors vs. Celtics score: Boston makes easy work of Toronto in Game 1 of second-round series - CBSSports.com

After first-round sweeps, both the Raptors and Celtics were looking to carry their momentum into Game 1 of their semifinal series on Sunday afternoon. Ultimately, though, it was Boston that got the best of Toronto Sunday in their opener. Propelled by 21 points apiece from Jayson Tatum and Marcus Smart, the Celtics pulled out a 112-94 victory over the Raptors to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Kemba Walker recorded his first career postseason double-double with 18 points and 10 assists, and Jaylen Brown also added 17 points and five rebounds for Boston. In all, the Celtics had six players score in double figures, including all five starters.

Kyle Lowry led the way for Toronto with 17 points, but made just 5 of his 12 attempts from the floor, in what was a disturbing trend for the entire Raptors team. Boston held Toronto to 36 percent shooting from the field and 25 percent from long range and they limited All-Star Pascal Siakam to just 13 points on 5-for-16 shooting. It was certainly a rough start for the Raptors, but they have experience falling behind early in a series. In the Eastern Conference finals last season, Toronto fell behind 2-0 to Milwaukee. It then went on to win four straight games to secure a spot in the Finals. Toronto will now look to regroup and bounce back for Game 2 on Tuesday night.

Raptors' Kyle Lowry to return from ankle injury in Game 1 against Celtics - CBC.ca

The Toronto Raptors say all-star guard Kyle Lowry is cleared to play in Sunday's Round 2 series opener at 1 p.m. ET against Boston after spraining his ankle while stepping on the foot of Brooklyn's Chris Chiozza early in the team's series-clinching win a week ago.

The Celtics are the only team to beat Toronto in the club's 12 games during the NBA restart.

Lowry practised Saturday for the first time in three days.

Toronto, which sports a 12-2 record without the six-time all-star in the lineup, rallied to complete its four-game sweep of Brooklyn with the bench scoring an NBA-record 100 points in a 150-122 rout of the Nets on Aug. 23. The Raptors' 150 points marked a franchise best.

Lowry appeared to roll his left ankle when he stepped on the foot of Chiozza, briefly attempted to keep playing but then hopped to the locker room with 2:48 left in the first quarter at Walt Disney World near Orlando, Fla. He had two points and three assists in nine minutes.

"It would hurt us a lot," Raptors head coach Nick Nurse said at the time on the prospect of playing without Lowry. "You guys know how big a cog he is to this whole thing. He's our most experienced, toughest leader we got."

Celtics took season series

Nurse noted Lowry played the remainder of the team's historic championship run last season after damaging ligaments in his left thumb in Game 7 of the conference semifinals.

"It's gonna take something pretty serious to keep him out," the coach said recently.

Toronto faces the Celtics for the first time in post-season history after Boston eliminated the Philadelphia 76ers in four games.

The Celtics won three of the four regular-season meetings with the Raptors, including a 22-point victory on Aug. 7 inside the NBA bubble.

Boston is also banged up, with forward Gordon Hayward potentially sidelined a month with a sprained right ankle. Shooting guard Javonte Green and point guard Tremont Waters also won't play Sunday, according to reports.

However, both teams have the ability to spread their scoring around. Toronto is the first team with five players averaging 15 points per game since the 1973-74 Buffalo Braves. Boston has three players averaging more than 20 points per game in Jayson Tatum, Kemba Walker and Jaylen Brown.

Canucks being tested by Golden Knights’ defence, special teams - Sportsnet.ca

EDMONTON – The Vegas Golden Knights are so deep and strong, with size, speed and firepower throughout their lineup, it’s easy to overlook how well they defend.

The Vancouver Canucks got a reminder on Saturday when they fell behind by a couple of goals early and rarely threatened before losing 3-0 to the Knights, who shut down the neutral zone while opening a 2-1 lead in their Stanley Cup Playoffs series.

It was the second time in three games that goalie Robin Lehner has shut out the Canucks, who had one of the National Hockey League’s top-10 offences during the regular season. Vancouver managed only 14 five-on-five shots Saturday and trying to chase down a two-goal deficit against Vegas felt a little like trying to chase down a freight train.

The Canucks’ best chances were all early, when the team’s three power plays in the first 11 minutes included a 78-second five-on-three.

There is so little margin for error for the Canucks in this series that getting out-goaltended and out-special-teamed creates a gulf between the teams. Vancouver’s marvellous and unexpected playoff run will be a game away from ending if the Canucks don’t execute and finish better on Sunday when the teams play for the second time in 25 hours.

Livestream the Canucks in the Stanley Cup Qualifiers, plus every game of the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs on Sportsnet NOW.

“I thought we were unlucky to be down 2-0,” Canucks coach Travis Green said. “That happens in playoff hockey. I think our team, sometimes when we get down we tend to overpass the puck a little bit. I thought we had a few too many east-west plays in the offensive zone, especially in the second period. I really liked our first period. Skated well, drew some penalties. Give their goalie credit.

“I think we easily could have been up after the first period, but that’s all part of playoff hockey. Sometimes you have a good period but you don’t win it. Sometimes you’re going to play well and it doesn’t go in the net.”

At one stage in the opening 20 minutes, shots were 15-5 for the Canucks while the score was 2-0 for the Knights.

Between those early power plays, when the Canucks tested Lehner nine times but couldn’t get a puck past him, the Knights managed to build its two-goal lead as Alex Tuch and Zach Whitecloud scored on top-corner shots 83 seconds apart, starting at 4:05.

Tuch blew past flat-footed Canucks defenceman Jordie Benn to skate on to Nicolas Roy’s bounce pass, then deftly controlled the puck before burying a rolling forehand over goalie Jacob Markstrom’s left shoulder.

Two shifts later, struggling Vancouver defenceman Quinn Hughes had the puck bounce away from him along the boards for a defensive-zone turnover. Hughes recovered to prevent an initial scoring chance, but Whitecloud swooped in from the blue line to collect the loose puck and shoot far side as Markstrom was being screened by Chris Tanev, Hughes’ partner.

It looked more like bad luck than a bad play by Hughes, but the 20-year-old struggled again to find or create any room at even-strength against the physical Knights.

When the Canucks eliminated the Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues last series, Hughes looked like the best defenceman in the NHL. He hasn’t been the best in any of the games against the Knights, who have stapled the five-foot-10 defenceman more in three games than the Blues managed to tag him in six.

The Knights aren’t letting Hughes skate the puck up ice and at times the rookie looks less confident than he did last week when trying to beat a defender one-on-one.

“He’s a young guy finding his way through another round of the playoffs,” Green said of his franchise player. “I think he’s fine; I’m not worried about him at all. That (Vegas) team can chew up ice and take away time and space. They’ve got a lot of speed on their team. He’s adapting to it. He’s still doing a lot of good things on the power play. I’m not worried about him one bit. He’ll be fine.”

Hughes had two shots on goal in 26:22 of ice time and Vancouver was outshot 8-3 when he was on the ice at five-on-five. It was his best game of the series, but the Canucks need something special from their special player to be able to take down the Knights over seven games.

Also disconcerting for Vancouver was the lack of shots, hits and faceoffs for power forward J.T. Miller, who had only one shot in 23:30 of ice time — second only to Hughes’ time on ice. One of the best faceoff men in the NHL this season, Miller took only three draws, possibly indicating the hand or thumb he hurt blocking a shot early in the playoffs is becoming a bigger hindrance.

He’ll have little time to heal or rest in a playoff schedule further compressed by the two-day, player-driven shutdown this week to focus attention on racism and social justice.

Vegas coach Peter DeBoer said Saturday morning that he believes the hectic schedule favours the Knights.

“I’ve said from Day 1, I think that’s advantage to us,” DeBoer said. “The tighter the schedule, the more back-to-backs, the more your depth comes into play. And that’s at all positions. I think we welcome that. It tests your depth, it tests your character and we like where we are on those things.”

The Canucks are being tested now.
