Jays Lose to Orioles, Again - Bluebird Banter

Once again, we couldn’t hit.

Just five hits in the game, so scoring a run is a bit of an overachievement.

Merrifield had two hits, Vlad, Kirk, and Kiermaier had the others. Vlad drove in our run.

Kevin Gausman wasn’t sharp. He gave up 8 hits and 2 walks in 4.1 innings, giving up 3 earned. It wasn’t like he was giving up rockets, mostly seeing-eye hits. But there were a lot of them. Kevin was saved a run by a very nice throw by Daulton Varsho, getting Austin Hays at the plate.

Bowden Francis got four outs without giving up a run.

Génesis Cabrera got three outs, with a strikeout.

Thomas Hatch pitched 2.1 innings. He had some trouble in the ninth. He gave up 5 hits, 2 earned, 1 unearned with a walk and 2 strikeouts. He was hurt by some bad bunt defence. A bunt to Chapman, who expect DeJong to cover third. Matt got the ball, looked to third, no one there, and then threw wide of first.

No Jays of the Day today. Vlad had the high mark at .086.

The Other Award: Chapman (-.180 for an 0 for 4 with 3 strikeouts), Kirk (-.166, 1 for 4, 2 k), and Gausman (-.099).

Tomorrow we start a series in Boston. Some hitting would be nice.

Blue Jays snap three-game losing streak with victory over AL-leading Orioles - TSN

TORONTO (AP) — Brandon Belt reached base three times and scored twice and the Toronto Blue Jays snapped a three-game losing streak by beating the American League-leading Orioles 4-1 on Wednesday night.

Paul DeJong made his Toronto debut at shortstop as the Blue Jays placed All-Star and AL batting leader Bo Bichette on the 10-day injured list because of right patellar tendonitis.

Left-hander Yusei Kikuchi pitched six innings to win back-to-back starts. Kikuchi (9-3) allowed one run and six hits. He hadn’t won consecutive outings since a three-start winning streak in April.

Yimi García pitched the seventh inning and Jordan Hicks worked the eighth for Toronto. Erik Swanson finished for his third save in four chances, picking off rookie Jordan Westburg at first base for the final out.

Toronto’s George Springer spiked his bat after grounding out to the mound in the second, extending his hitless to 35 at-bats.

Springer snapped his slump and drove in the opening run of the game with a bloop single to center in the fourth. The four-time All-Star raised his arms in celebration as he reached first base.

Baltimore tied it on Adley Rutschman’s RBI single in the fifth. Rutschman beat out an infield hit when Kikuchi didn’t cover first base.

The Blue Jays broke a 1-1 tie with a three-run sixth that featured more bruises than base hits.

Grayson Rodriguez (2-3) left after consecutive one-out walks to Belt and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Shintaro Fujinami walked Springer on four pitches to load the bases, then forced home a run when his first pitch to Matt Chapman drilled him.

Fujinami got ahead 0-2 on Danny Jansen before hitting the Blue Jays catcher on the arm to force in another run, and Springer scored when shortstop Jorge Mateo made an error on Daulton Varshi’s grounder.

Rodriguez allowed three runs and two hits in 5 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out six.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Bichette’s IL stint is retroactive to Tuesday. He left Monday in the third when he jammed his knee while running the bases.

Orioles: To make room for Flaherty, Baltimore optioned RHP Bryan Baker to Triple-A Norfolk.

Blue Jays: Toronto recalled RHP Thomas Hatch from Triple-A Buffalo and optioned RHP Nate Pearson to the Bisons.

Baltimore’s Félix Bautista was named AL Reliever of the Month for July, his third monthly award this season. Bautista had eight saves and 25 strikeouts over 14 innings in 11 scoreless appearances last month. Bautista’s only July blemish? He blew the save and took the loss for the AL in the All-Star Game.

UP NEXT

Right-hander Jack Flaherty will make his first start for Baltimore on Thursday in the series finale. Acquired from St. Louis on Tuesday, Flaherty was 7-6 with a 4.43 ERA for the Cardinals, who are in last place in the NL Central. Former Orioles RHP Kevin Gausman (8-5, 3.10 ERA) will start for Toronto.

Santander powers AL-leading Orioles to rout of Blue Jays - TSN

TORONTO (AP) — Anthony Santander hit his second career grand slam, Gunnar Henderson homered for the second straight game and the AL-leading Baltimore Orioles remained unbeaten in Toronto this season, routing the Blue Jays 13-3 Tuesday night.

Santander went 3 for 4 with a walk and four RBIs. He cleared the bases with his 19th home run, a deep drive off Nate Pearson in the eighth.

Henderson went 3 for 5 with two RBIs, and Ryan Mountcastle reached base four times and drove in two runs as the Orioles won for the fourth time in five games and improved their league-best record to 66-41.

Right-hander Kyle Bradish (7-6) allowed three runs and four hits in seven innings, snapping a two-start losing streak. Bradish walked one and struck out seven.

Blue Jays catcher Danny Jansen hit a two-run home run and Brandon Belt added a solo shot, but Toronto fell to 1-7 against the Orioles, including 0-5 north of the border.

Toronto is 7-22 against AL East opponents.

Blue Jays left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu was activated off the injured list to make his season debut. The former All-Star had Tommy John surgery in June 2022.

Adley Rutschman and Mountcastle opened the game with back-to-back doubles and Santander followed with a single. Henderson drove in a run with a two-out fielder’s choice.

Ryu (0-1) allowed four runs and nine hits in five-plus innings, leaving after Henderson’s leadoff homer in the sixth. Ryu walked one and struck out three.

Jansen matched his career best with his 15th home run, connecting off Bradish in the second. Belt tied it at 3 with a one-out drive in the third, his ninth of the season.

Henderson broke the tie in the sixth with his 18th home run. He also hit a solo home run Monday.

Mountcastle’s second double of the game drove in a run in Baltimore’s three-run seventh against left-hander Génesis Cabrera.

After sitting out Monday, Blue Jays outfielder George Springer returned but went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts. Springer is hitless in 34 at-bats.

Blue Jays add depth at MLB trade deadline, making three trades with Cardinals - CP24

Toronto Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins feels that his team kept pace with — or even exceeded — its American League East rivals at the trade deadline.

Shortstop Paul DeJong was added to the Blue Jays in a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals hours before Tuesday's trade deadline. It was the third deal the two teams struck in the past two weeks, with Toronto also adding relievers Jordan Hicks and Genesis Cabrera.

After the deadline had passed Atkins spoke to media and noted that divisional rivals like the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles did not make the big splashes in the trade market that they traditionally have.

"The AL East wasn't quite as busy as it sometimes can be," said Atkins. "I think it also speaks to how strong the teams are if you look at each of them.

"It seems everyone was more focused on acquiring depth, protecting their ability to stay in the shape that they're in."

That was certainly Toronto's plan.

The Blue Jays also got cash considerations with DeJong from the Cardinals, sending pitching prospect Matt Svanson to St. Louis in return.

Cabrera was acquired from St. Louis on July 21 for minor-league catcher Sammy Hernandez. Hicks was then added to Toronto's bullpen Sunday in the second deal with the Cardinals, sending pitching prospects Adam Kloffenstein and Sem Robberse.

"A lot of the teams that speculated on potentially moving players didn't, some of the players that were rumoured to be coming our way or even available, didn't seem to be as available to us," said Atkins on the nature of this year's trade market. "So most of the deals today that were available to us were smaller in nature and more roster management."

Adding DeJong became a pressing issue Tuesday after Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette was hurt running the basepaths in a 4-2 loss to Baltimore the night before.

A two-time all-star, Bichette leads Toronto with a .321 average and 17 home runs this season. It's the highest batting average in the American League and fourth best in MLB.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider confirmed that Bichette was day-to-day after an MRI found no significant structural damage to the 25-year-old shortstop's knee. He said the team would continue to monitor Bichette's progress.

DeJong has 13 home runs, 32 runs-batted-in and a .233 batting average in 81 games this season. In 2019, DeJong hit a career-high 30 home runs and 78 RBIs and was named an all-star.

"(Bichette's injury) is a disappointment, but we are encouraged by the news after the fact," said Atkins. "When you see someone in pain there's obviously concern on many levels and then the more you learn, the more at peace we became.

"But it is a big hit to us hence the acquisition. We're very optimistic that (Bichette) will be helping our team again. "

The 29-year-old De Jong has played his entire seven-year career so far with the Cardinals, who drafted him in the fourth round of the MLB draft in 2015.

"The goal of any team is to make sure all your bases are covered," said Schneider. "So if that means we're without Bo for a little bit, and it may not, I think that past today you kind of lose that option to really protect yourself."

Toronto made a series of transactions within its organization on Tuesday.

Outfielder Jordan Luplow was designated for assignment to make room for DeJong on the 40-man roster.

Left-handed pitcher Hyun Jin Ryu was reinstated from the 60-day injured list to make his first start of the season after recovering from Tommy John surgery. Right-handed reliever Bowden Francis was optioned to the Blue Jays' triple-A affiliate in Buffalo, N.Y., in a corresponding move.

Infielders Ernie Clement and Otto Lopez were also recalled from triple-A Buffalo. Clement was active for the game against Baltimore but Lopez was placed on the 60-day injured list with a left oblique strain.

Atkins said that the Blue Jays learned a lot about the trade market in the 48 hours leading up to the deadline.

"Hence our moving sooner on Hicks and then the opportunity today with the DeJong," said Atkins. "I'm excited about Genesis Cabrera as well.

"Obviously with (injured relief pitcher) Chad Green coming soon, Hyun-Jin Ryu starting today, I feel like our depth is really good."

As the Blue Jays look to add a significant piece or two prior to Tuesday’s MLB trade deadline, the team is hopeful it won’t have to deal with the subtraction of its best hitter.

That was certainly the early concern on Monday night at the Rogers Centre when star shortstop Bo Bichette exited the game in the third inning with what the team later described as right-knee discomfort.

“(We’re) still gathering information to see what we are going to do next,” manager John Schneider said following his team’s 4-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. “In terms of what’s going forward, we’re still figuring that out right now.”

While you can’t read anything into the fact that the Jays aren’t ruling out a serious injury, it was clear there was some concern.

With two out and looking to make something happen by stretching a single into a double, Bichette appeared to take a bad step, then stopped in obvious pain.

Bichette immediately grabbed at his right knee as training staff and Schneider hustled out to the infield to tend to their star player. It was also clear by Bichette’s reaction there was some fear in the moment as to the extent of the injury.

“He’s our best player,” Monday’s starter Chris Bassitt said. “Obviously we’re waiting (to find out his status) a lot more than you guys are.”
