Canada reaches semifinals at world juniors with win over Czech Republic - Sportsnet.ca

EDMONTON — Canada advanced to the semifinals of the world junior men’s hockey championship with a 3-0 win over the Czech Republic on Saturday.

Goaltender Devon Levi posted a 29-save shutout and Dylan Cozens had a goal and an assist for the host country.

Connor McMichael scored into an empty net and defenceman Bowen Byram also scored for Canada at Rogers Place.

The Canadians awaited the outcome of a later quarterfinal between the United States and Slovakia to know their semifinal opponent Monday.

An American win would have Canada facing Russia on Monday, but the Canadians would draw the Slovaks in the event of them upsetting the U.S.

Russia reached the semifinals with a 2-1 quarterfinal win over Germany, while Finland downed Sweden 3-2 to advance.

Canada was the only team to go undefeated in the preliminary round at 4-0 to top Pool A. The Czech Republic (2-2) ranked fourth in Pool B.

Nick Malik, who spend part of last season with the Ontario Hockey League’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, stopped 22 shots in the loss.

Canada led 2-0 after the opening period on goals from co-captains Cozens and Byram.

The host country didn’t dominate puck possession as it did in a 4-1 win over Finland to cap the round-robin, however.

The Czechs battled hard for the puck to make Canada chase them, and often clogged the neutral zone to force the Canadians to jump and chase.

But Canada’s grinding forecheck in the third period shrunk the Czech Republic’s chances of a comeback.

Czech coach Karel Mlejnek pulled Malik for an extra attacker with five and a half minutes to play in regulation, but McMichael scored an empty-netter at 17:11.

The Czech couldn’t produce a power-play goal with less than two minutes to play when Quinton Byfield was penalized for hooking.

Canada outshot the Czechs 11-6 in a scoreless, penalty-free second period.

With a hard-working backcheck, Canadian forward Peyton Krebs prevented an odd-man Czech chance off a turnover late in the period.

Levi played his busiest period of the tournament stopping all 12 shots he faced in the first.

With eight attempts on Malik in the opening frame, Canada was outshot in a period for the first time in the tournament.

But seconds after Adam Raska’s interference penalty expired, Byram scored his first of the tournament squeezing a shot under Malik’s right armpit at 11:39.

Cozens scored Canada’s first goal for the second time in as many games.

Connor McMichael flipped the puck up ice to Cozens on a breakaway. The Buffalo Sabres prospect shovelled the puck between Malik’s pads at 8:22.

Byram and Cozens are alternating the captaincy in the absence of injured Kirby Dach.

Canada was minus forward Alex Newhook, who injured his shoulder in the Finland game.

Connor Zary centred a line with wingers Krebs and Cole Perfetti in Newhook’s absence, and defenceman Jordan Spence also drew into the lineup.

Cozens has a team-leading seven goals and six assists in five games.

With 22 combined points from both the 2020 and 2021 world junior tournaments, Cozens ranks sixth all-time for Canada ahead of John Tavares (20) and behind Jason Allison (24).

Newhook Questionable for Tonight's Hockey Quarterfinal - VOCM

A key cog in Canada’s junior hockey team is a 50/50 for tonight’s quarterfinal matchup against the Czech Republic. Centre Alex Newhook of St. John’s suffered an upper-body injury in the Finland game and will be a game time decision.

That game starts at 8:30 NST.

Before that, Russia plays Germany and, at 5p.m., Finland plays Sweden. The last game of the night has the United States facing the Slovaks.

2021 World Junior Hockey Championship schedule: January 2, 2021 - Habs Eyes on the Prize

Quarter-finals

12 PM ET: Russia (2-1-0-1, 8 pts, 2nd Group B) vs Germany (1-1-0-2, 5 pts, 3rd Group A)

Russia’s chance to win their group was taken away when the United States dominated Sweden on New Year’s Eve. In the end, their regulation loss to the Czech Republic meant they would finish second despite beating the United States and Sweden. Once Germany got their full lineup, they won both of their games in order to make it this far. Tim Stützle and his teammates have their work cut out for them, but the Czechs provided a blue print of how to upset the Russians. The game will be on TSN 1/4/5 and RDS in Canada and NHL Network in the US.

3:30 PM ET: Sweden (2-0-1-1, 6 pts, 3rd Group B) vs Finland (3-0-0-1, 9 pts, 2nd Group A)

Two of the biggest hockey rivals get a chance to play in the most anticipated of the quarter-final matchups. Both teams will undoubtedly be disappointed to be in this game and both teams played their worst game of the tournament on New Year’s Eve. Sweden will have a decision to make on who will start the game in net after Hugo Alnefelt got the pull against the Americans. Finland will look to recover from their loss to Canada. No matter what happens in this game, one team will be bitterly disappointed to not fight for a medal. The game will be on TSN 1/4/5 and RDS in Canada and NHL Network in the US. TSN 3 will join the game in progress.

7 PM ET: Czech Republic (2-0-0-2, 6 pts, 4th Group B) vs Canada (4-0-0-0, 12 pts, 1st Group A)

Canada was dominant throughout the round robin, saving their best performance for last in a huge win over Finland. After leaving the Finland game early, Alex Newhook missed Canada’s practice on Friday and his status is up in the air for this game. For the Czech Republic, they know the task ahead of them. They showed what they were capable of against Russia in their 2-0 win, but have been unable to match that performance in their other games. The game will be on TSN 1/3/4/5 and RDS in Canada, NHL Network in the US.

10:30 PM ET: United States (3-0-0-1, 9 pts, 1st Group B) vs Slovakia (1-0-1-2, 4 pts, 4th Group A)

After losing to Russia in their opening game, the United States ran the table in their following three games, outscoring Austria, the Czech Republic, and Sweden 22-0 on their way to the group win. Spencer Knight rebounded after getting the pull in the Russia game and hasn’t allowed a goal in his two starts since. Slovakia played Canada tough, but their loss to Germany puts them in this game. They have a very young, but talented team with several key players eligible to return next year. Slovakia captain Samuel Knazko missed the game against Finland and it will be interesting to see whether he is able to return to the lineup. The game will be on TSN 1/3/4/5 and RDS in Canada, NHL Network in the US.

All games shown on TSN will be streamed on TSN Live in Canada, but it requires a subscription.

Fields out duels Lawrence, leads Ohio State past Clemson in Sugar Bowl - Sportsnet.ca

NEW ORLEANS — Justin Fields threw six touchdown passes to outshine Trevor Lawrence and No. 3 Ohio State avenged last season’s painful College Football Playoff loss to Clemson with a 49-28 victory in the Sugar Bowl semifinal Saturday night.

The Buckeyes (7-0) head to the CFP title game for the first time since the inaugural playoff to face No. 1 Alabama on Jan. 11 at Hard Rock Stadium in South Florida. Ohio State beat the Crimson Tide in the semifinals on the way to the 2014 national championship.

In a matchup of quarterback prodigies from Georgia, Fields might have given the Jacksonville Jaguars something to think about what do to with that first pick in the NFL draft. Lawrence is the presumptive No. 1, but Fields outplayed him on this night, going 22 for 28 for 385 yards. He set a Sugar Bowl record for TD passes and did it playing more than half the game after taking a vicious shot the side that forced him to miss a play and spend time in the medical tent.

Lawrence was 33 for 48 for 400 yards and three total touchdowns in what is expected to be the junior’s final college game. His final pass was intercepted, but Clemson (10-2) went 34-2 in his starts and won a national title when he was a freshman.

The third meeting between Clemson and Ohio State in the playoff, and fourth bowl matchup since the 2013 season, was a game the Buckeyes had been pointing toward ever since a 29-23 loss to Tigers in the Fiesta Bowl last year.

That score was everywhere the Buckeyes turned in the Woody Hayes Athletic Center in Columbus this year.

A chance for revenge was nearly derailed when the Big Ten cancelled fall football in August because of the pandemic. An abbreviated Big Ten season caused more headaches, with the Buckeyes having three games cancelled because of COVID-19 issues, including their own outbreak.

The playoff committee still liked Ohio State enough to put the Buckeyes in the final four, despite much griping from various parts of the country, including Clemson.

Ohio State coach Ryan Day talked all week about what a great story it would be for the Buckeyes to survive this rollercoaster of a season and still reach their goal.

Clemson took a 7-0 lead on the opening drive and then went up 14-7 with Lawrence and Etienne running for scores.

From there it was all Buckeyes. Fields threw touchdown passes to tight ends Luke Farrell and Jeremy Ruckert on consecutive drives to give Ohio State a 21-14 lead early in the second quarter.

Operating without offensive co-ordinator Tony Elliott, who did not make the trip while in COVID-19 protocols, the Clemson offence couldn’t respond. The Buckeyes kept rolling behind Field, though not without a major scare.

Field scrambled on a third-and-long and took a hard shot to the right side from Clemson linebacker James Skalski that put the Buckeyes star into a fetal position before rolling over onto his back in obvious pain.

The play was reviewed for a targeting foul that resulted in Clemson’s top linebacker being ejected and a first-and-goal for the Buckeyes.

Fields came out for one play and returned to immediately throw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Chris Olave that made it 28-14.

Fields went to the injury tent with Ohio State athletic trainers on Clemson’s next possession, which didn’t last long.

Fields was right back out there on the Buckeyes next drive. He took another hit on a scramble and slowly got up. After each play, he moved gingerly, but with Trey Sermon running hard and the Buckeyes providing good protection, Fields continued to carve up the Tigers.

He hit Ruckert for a 12-yard score with 11 seconds left in the half.

A year after blowing 16-0 first-half lead in last year’s excruciating semifinal loss to Clemson, the Buckeyes handed the Tigers their largest halftime deficit (21) since the 2012 Orange Bowl against West Virginia (29 points).

The second half started with Clemson looking like it might have another comeback in it. Fields was intercepted in the Tigers’ end zone and Lawrence came back with an 80-yard touchdown drive to cut it to 35-21.

Nervous time for the Buckeyes? Not for long. Fields threw a perfectly placed bomb to Olave for a 56-yard touchdown pass that made it 42-21 with 4:55 left in the third quarter.

And if there was any doubt, Fields threw another rain-making TD pass to Jameson Williams that officially went into the books as a 46-yarder, but travelled over 50 in the air.

THE TAKEAWAY

Ohio State: Sermon followed up his school-record 331-yard rushing Big Ten championship game with 193 on the ground and another 61 receiving. The Oklahoma transfer is having a late-season breakout similar to Ezekiel Elliott’s in 2014.

Clemson: Coach Dabo Swinney complained Ohio State’s six-game schedule was too short to warrant a playoff spot and might even give the Buckeyes an unfair advantage. Yes, he said the Buckeyes were good enough to beat the Tigers, but he placed Ohio State 11th on his coaches’ poll ballot just the same. It was nothing personal, Swinney said, but the Buckeyes sure looked as if they took it that way, beating Clemson for the first time in five bowl meetings.

MISSING

The Buckeyes were without second-leading rusher Master Teague, starting guard Harry Miller and two defensive ends in Tyler Friday and Zach Harrison. Ohio State did not give details of their absences but all four had played in the Big Ten championship two weeks ago.

NEXT

Ohio State: The Buckeyes will make their second appearance in the College Football Playoff national championship game. They beat Oregon to win the 2014 title.

Clemson: The Tigers open next season with a doozy of a non-conference game against Georgia in Charlotte.
