Toronto Maple Leafs sign Mermis, Myers, Paré to one-year contracts - CP24

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed defencemen Dakota Mermis and Philippe Myers, and forward Cédric Paré, the NHL club announced Tuesday.

All three signed one-year contracts worth US$775,000. Paré's deal is a two-way contract.

The 30-year-old Mermis from Alton, Ill., recorded eight points (three goals, five assists) in 47 games with the Minnesota Wild last season.

Myers, 27, from Moncton, N.B., appeared in five games with the Tampa Bay Lightning last season. He added 23 points (four goals, 19 assists) in 61 games with the American Hockey League's Syracuse Crunch.

Paré, 25, from Levis, Que., posted 35 points (14 goals, 21 assists) in 61 games with the AHL's Colorado Eagles.

Inter worried as Buchanan taken away by ambulance after Canada injury - Football Italia

Inter are on tenterhooks after reports Canada international Tajon Buchanan was taken away by ambulance following a serious injury in training.

The 25-year-old is currently participating in the Copa America with his country and was expected to start the next match.

Instead, he could be out for a significant amount of time, as during training ground drills today he suffered a serious injury to the lower leg following a coming together.

It was so bad that he had to be stretchered off and taken by ambulance to a local hospital in Dallas for an MRI scan.

According to TSN Sports, the mood in the Canada camp was ‘sombre’ following the devastating setback.

Canada defender Alistair Johnston even told TSN the injury could be ‘heard’ as soon as it happened, which might suggest a fracture.

Initial reports suggest if the fracture needs surgery, he’ll be out for four to six months.

Inter experience for Buchanan

Buchanan only joined Inter in January from Club Brugge at a cost of €7m and made history as the first ever Canadian to score in Serie A.

If the right-back is out for a long time, then Inter might have to seek a replacement on the transfer market, which was not part of their budget or strategy.

He was brought in effectively to replace Juan Cuadrado, who has now left as a free agent.

NHL free agency opens with wild day of movement - NHL.com

The Panthers knew this would be a hard day to keep their Stanley Cup-winning team intact, and they couldn't do it. But they kept some important pieces, signing forward Sam Reinhart to an eight-year contract and defenseman Dmitry Kulikov to a four-year deal.

But Florida lost Montour, Ekman-Larsson, Kevin Stenlund (Utah) and Ryan Lomberg (Calgary Flames). The Panthers replaced them by signing forwards Tomas Nosek (one year), A.J. Greer (two years) and Jesper Boqvist (one year), as well as goalie Chris Driedger (one year) .

The Panthers' remaining UFAs are forwards Vladimir Tarasenko, Kyle Okposo, Nick Cousins and Steven Lorentz.

The Boston Bruins made two major moves to keep pace in the Atlantic Division, signing center Elias Lindholm (seven years, $7.75 million AAV) and defenseman Nikita Zadorov (six years, $5 million AAV).

Lindholm's signing ended a two-year pursuit of the center by the Bruins. He's not Patrice Bergeron, but he's Bergeron Lite, and he fills a major need at center for Boston.

Zadorov gives the Bruins more size and experience on the back end, a potential defense partner for Charlie McAvoy. That would be Boston's top pair.

The Chicago Blackhawks continued to build around center Connor Bedard by insulating him with more experienced players, including three players who have won a combined seven Stanley Cup championships in forwards Teuvo Teravainen (three years, $5.4 million AAV) and Pat Maroon (one year, $1.3 million AAV), and defenseman Alec Martinez (one year, $4 million AAV).

Teravainen won the Cup with the Blackhawks in 2015. Maroon won it three times (2019, 2020, 2021) and Martinez also won it three times (2012, 2014, 2023).

In addition, Chicago signed forwards Tyler Bertuzzi (four years, $5.5 million AAV), Craig Smith (one year, $1 million AAV) and Joey Anderson (two years, $800,000 AAV), defenseman T.J. Brodie (two years, $3.75 million AAV), and goalie Laurent Brossoit (two years, $3.3 million AAV).

The signings push the Blackhawks in the right direction. It's a stretch to say it will push them to the Stanley Cup Playoffs this season.

The Edmonton Oilers did some work even without a general manager, signing forwards Viktor Arvidsson (two years, $4 million AAV) and Jeff Skinner (one year, $3 million AAV), and defenseman Josh Brown (three years, $1 million AAV), while also re-signing Adam Henrique (two years, $3 million AAV), Mattias Janmark (three years, $1.45 million AAV) Corey Perry (one year, $1.4 million AAV) and Connor Brown (one year, $1 million).

Staying in the Pacific Division, the San Jose Sharks got two veteran players to buy into their rebuild, signing forwards Tyler Toffoli (four years, $6 million AAV) and Alexander Wennberg (two years, $5 million AAV).

Toffoli and Wennberg, along with center Barclay Goodrow, who was claimed off waivers from the New York Rangers last month, will help the Sharks insulate and develop top-pick Macklin Celebrini and rookie Will Smith.

There were some other big moves on this big Monday in the NHL, including Sean Monahan to the Columbus Blue Jackets (five years, $5.5 million AAV), Anthony Duclair to the New York Islanders (four years, financial terms undisclosed) and Jake DeBrusk to the Vancouver Canucks (seven years, $5.5 million AAV).

And this was just Day 1 of the offseason.

What a day, indeed.

Jets buy goalie battle, depth defenceman as free agency opens - Winnipeg Sun

Monday’s opening to NHL free agency was merely another in a long line of days that won’t require much ink in the annals of Winnipeg Jets lore.

Winnipeg’s contributions to a burgeoning pot that ballooned to more than $1.15 billion in total spending was a paltry $6 million rounded up.

That kind of money doesn’t buy you much these days, but the Jets wrung two goalies and a defenceman out of it.

One of the goalies Winnipeg signed was a familiar face in Eric Comrie. Winnipeg’s 2013 third-round pick signed a two-year, $1.65 million after two seasons in Buffalo.

They then signed 27-year-old Finnish netminder Kaapo Kahkonen on a one-year, $1 million deal. He split time with New Jersey and San Jose last season.

“We thought that having a competition for the backup is a healthy thing for the organization,” general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff said.

The team also re-signed defenceman Colin Miller, a trade deadline pickup they barely played down the stretch or in the playoffs.

He’s a right shot who could get a better opportunity without Nate Schmidt after the latter was bought out on Monday.

The rest of the work this offseason will come at a later date.

Winnipeg spent just 0.52 per cent of what was shelled out on Monday, accurate to the early evening as deals kept trickling in, including Miller’s, who signed after Cheveldayoff spoke.

Compare that to Central Division rivals Nashville, who blitzed the market early, handing out $108.5 million to three impact players—Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault and Brady Skjei.

Or Chicago, who attacked it early, dishing out $52.7 million for seven players as their rebuild continues around Connor Bedard.

“Free agency is an interesting time, that’s for sure,” Cheveldayoff said. “I can guarantee you, because I’ve been on the other side, as exhilarating as it can be to make some of those deals, sometimes you wake up the next morning and kind of wonder what did I just do.”

July 1 has rarely been a day where the Jets have made hay on their roster. Monday didn’t buck that trend.

They lost a bidding war with Columbus on Sean Monahan, who signed a five-year, $27.5 million pact with the Blue Jackets. This left the Jets with a sizeable hole at their second-line centre position that Monahan had plugged since February when a first-round pick was spent acquiring him.

Monahan chose to take his family east, closer to his native Ontario, he said in a Zoom call with reporters.

Defenceman Brenden Dillon also walked, taking his size and grit further east to New Jersey and a four-year, $16 million deal with the Devils.

Cheveldayoff said they were in the mix on Dillon, but sources close to the situation said Dillon never received an offer from the Jets, even after the team bought out fellow blue-liner Schmidt on Monday.

The GM, meanwhile, saluted Schmidt for his service.

“He had the opportunity to have a no-trade in his contract, and he waived it to come here and help us push some things forward,” Cheveldayoff said. “It was a tough decision, but we wanted to open up some opportunities within the organization for some of the players that have been here more.”

The Jets saved $3.2 million with the buyout and still have $8.66 million to work with. Five restricted free agents, including Cole Perfetti, need contracts after receiving their qualifying offers on Sunday.

“We felt it was just as important to have that cap space available whether it’s for now, whether it’s for later, whatever that situation might be,” Cheveldayoff said.

One lever the Jets could pull is targeting teams that have bought themselves into cap troubles, needing to shed some space to become cap-compliant over time.

Cheveldayoff said prospects like Brad Lambert and Ville Heinola will have opportunities to win jobs in camp.

The team has also been linked to veteran centre Adam Henrique, with the 34-year-old yet to decide on his options.

Comrie, meanwhile, was happy to be back.

“I love everything about Winnipeg,” he said. “I love the guys, and it always feels special back there because I’ve had such great fond memories of being there for a long time.”

And he welcomed the competition for the backup job.

“You’ve got to go to camp and earn a job, and that’s my main thing,” Comrie said. “To go there and earn a job, just work as hard as I can and try to secure that position,” Comrie said.

Injuries hampered him in both seasons with the Sabres, including a lengthy spell on the sidelines with an MCL sprain in his first year and a groin injury that threw him off-kilter last year.

“My body feels as good as it ever has,” he said Monday. “My training has gone unbelievable to start off the summer so far.”

Comrie’s first stint as an NHL backup was solid, going 10-5-1 in 19 appearances during the 2021-22 season. He had a 2.58 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage.

Kahkonen, meanwhile, was a fourth-round pick by the Minnesota Wild in 2014.

He’s played 139 NHL games, with a 49-67-15 record, a 3.33 goals-against average and a .899 save percentage.

Last season, Kahkonen faced the Jets once, stopping 38 shots in a 1-0 loss to the Jets on Valentine’s Day. His only other start against Winnipeg came on Feb. 8, 2002, when he stopped 27 shots in a 2-0 loss.

Other former Jets on the move

Laurent Brossoit signed a two-year, $6.6 million deal with the Chicago Blackhawks after earning himself a solid raise with his stellar play behind Hellebuyck this past season.

Forward Tyler Toffoli, meanwhile, signed a four-year, $24 million deal with the San Jose Sharks.

Toffoli arrived at the trade deadline for a 2024 third-round and a 2025 second-round pick.

Jets open 2024-25 season in Edmonton

The 2024-25 season begins on the road this fall.

The Jets open the year against the Stanley Cup finalist Edmonton Oilers on Oct. 9.

Winnipeg’s home opener comes on Oct. 11 vs. the Chicago Blackhawks at Canada Life Centre.

Walk-off field goal gives REDBLACKS narrow victory over Ticats - CFL.ca

OTTAWA — The Ottawa REDBLACKS were due for a win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and they got just that on Sunday night at TD Place Stadium. The REDBLACKS came out on top 24-22 in a hard-fought battle to keep the Ticats winless in 2024, and snap a 10-game losing streak against the Tabbies.

Lewis Ward‘s walk-off field goal was the difference as Ottawa ended the drought against their East Division counterpart, not having defeated Hamilton since the 2018 postseason.

Ottawa’s Dru Brown compiled 265 yards through the air and a touchdown pass to Justin Hardy. Jaelon Acklin led the way for the receiving group with seven catches for 90 yards.

On the other end, Bo Levi Mitchell had 322 passing yards and two touchdown passes. Tim White finished the game with a touchdown catch, eight receptions, and 118 receiving yards.

DeVonte Dedmon fumbled on the game’s opening kickoff, giving the Tiger-Cats strong field positioning to begin the game. On second down, Mitchell found White in the end zone to give the Ticats a very early 7-0 lead just over a minute into the contest.

A 43-yard return for Dedmon on his second return of the evening helped the REDBLACKS on their next drive. Ryquell Armstead’s 25-yard catch-and-run got Ottawa just outside Hamilton’s end zone and then Dustin Crum ran the football in from the one-yard line. Ward missed his attempted kick, leaving the score at 7-6.

Later in the first quarter, a 34-yard pickup by Hardy propelled the REDBLACKS downfield. Ward’s field goal from 34 yards out was good to give the home team their first lead at 9-7.

With time winding down in the first frame, the Ticats looked to answer back. A 16-yard reception from Mitchell to White started the drive, with a 9-yard run from Hamilton’s quarterback giving the visitors a fresh set of downs at Ottawa’s 42-yard line. Switching sides of the field at the onset of the second quarter, the Ticats were forced to settle for a field goal after a couple of incompletions. Marc Liegghio‘s kick put his team back into the lead at 10-9.

A couple of strikes from Brown to Acklin brough the REDBLACKS into scoring range on their final drive of the first half. Brown looked his way once more on second-and-long, Acklin drew a pass interference call against Richard Leonard in the end zone. After a challenge from Tiger-Cats head coach Scott Milanovich, the call was overturned. Instead of setting up from the one-yard line, the REDBLACKS instead had to go for a field goal. Ward’s attempt from 36 was good to put the hosts up 12-10 at the half.

Mitchell came out of the dressing room searching for his favourite target in White. On the first play of the second half, the receiver caught the ball but coughed it up. Tuck was able to recover the football to give the Ticats 20 yards. On the next play, Mitchell connected with Steven Dunbar Jr. for the first time in the game, gaining 39 yards to bring the Tabbies just outside of the red zone. The Ticats offence was stopped there though, as Lorenzo Mauldin IV sacked Mitchell for a seven-yard loss. Liegghio’s field goal from 36 yards out was a hit to give the Ticats a 13-12 advantage.

After the Ticats defence forced Ottawa into punts on three consecutive drives to start the half, Mitchell led his offence to another scoring drive after feeding Kiondre Smith and Dunbar with first-down catches. Mitchell missed the mark when looking White’s way in the end zone, meaning the Ticats had to go for a field goal on third down. Liegghio’s attempt from 28 yards was a success to give the away team a 16-12 lead.

A big 28-yard play to Acklin got Ottawa motoring on the game’s next drive but that possession would be limited to just four plays after Armstead came up short of a first down in Hamilton territory. Ward’s 42-yard field goal made it a one-point game with 10:56 to go in the ballgame.

After three scoreless drives, Dedmon delivered another deadly punt return to bring Brown and the REDBLACKS offence to Hamilton’s 54 just prior to the three-minute warning. Armstead broke free for consecutive 14 and 17-yard rushes up the middle to push the REDBLACKS into the red zone. Brown locked in on Hardy who was free in the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown. Rhymes couldn’t bring down Brown’s throw when Ottawa went for the two-point conversion, leaving the score at 21-16 with two minutes on the clock.

As time winded down, Mitchell had to try and manufacture a game-winning drive. With 57 seconds remaining, Mitchell got the ball to Dunbar for a 22-yard catch to bring the Ticats to Ottawa’s 10. Shemar Bridges got loose on the right side of the end zone to restore his team’s one-point advantage, with the two-point conversion unsuccessful.

Needing to put points on the board with just 18 seconds to go, the REDBLACKS marched down the field courtesy of clutch catches from Acklin and then Addison. On the final play of the game, Ward called game with a successful 46-yard field goal to give Ottawa their first win over Hamilton since 2018.

Next up, the Ottawa REDBLACKS travel to Winnipeg to face the Blue Bombers on Friday, July 5 in Week 5. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats will return home to battle against the BC Lions on Sunday, July 7.
