Shapovalov defeats Coric in straight sets to move on to Vienna Open final - TSN
The Canadian Press
VIENNA — Canada's Denis Shapovalov will be moving on to the Vienna Open final after topping Borna Coric 7-6 (4), 6-0 on Saturday.
The Richmond Hill, Ont., native won a blistering 95 per cent of his first-serve points in addition to hitting seven aces.
Shapovalov also broke on three of his four opportunities.
"Definitely another great match for me," Shapovalov said. "Obviously Borna’s played some long difficult matches, so I think the first set was very important.
"I was really happy, I played a great tiebreak. I thought it was very close from both of us. Just one point I think made the difference. … Getting the break early on in the second set kind of just gave me a bit more energy and, you know, kind of made him lose, I think, a little bit of belief, but a great match for me."
Shapovalov sent the first set to a tiebreak after matching Coric with every game he won. The Canadian won the first three points in the final set before Coric came back to win four of the next seven. The 23-year-old Shapovalov won the set with an ace.
In a dominant second set, Shapovalov broke Coric's serve in the second game before saving a break point chance from Coric in the third. Shapovalov broke again in the fourth game as he held the Croatian scoreless en route to victory.
Shapovalov is now 2-2 in career matchups against Coric, having now won two straight over him.
World No. 4 Daniil Medvedev will be Shapovalov's next opponent Sunday as he looks to win his second career title and first this year. Medvedev is 3-2 in his career against Shapovalov.
"It's a good opportunity for me playing against a guy like Daniil," Shapovalov said. "(I) beat him a couple times before — he's a great player though.
"I mean, he's playing tremendously. The last couple times he got me and he's very tricky. He's having a great week. He's been playing well the whole time here, so it's going to be a difficult battle, but looking forward to it."

Nathan Rourke BC Lions Winnipeg blue Bombers halftime - TSN
TSN.ca Staff
BC Lions quarterback Nathan Rourke made his much-anticipated return in Friday's regular season finale against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, completing 7-of-11 passes for 68 yards before leaving the game before the end of the first half.
The Lions went into the break trailing the Bombers 17-6.
Rourke was not scheduled to finish the game and TSN's Farhan Lalji reports that the abbreviated outing was 'mission accomplished' for Rourke and the Lions as he attempts to get back into form before the Lions playoff game next week against the Calgary Stampeders.
Rourke done for the night. 7 of 11 for 68 yds. Took some hits. Wanted that last throw to Rhymes & the deep ball to Whitehead back, but overall mission accomplished. Took 3-4 hits & knocked the rust off ahead of next Sundays @CFL west final. @CFLonTSN @BCLions pic.twitter.com/80lS5oHOc9

Retooling on the fly has led to endless mediocrity for the Canucks - Vancouver Is Awesome
Fan frustration with the Vancouver Canucks came to a head on Saturday night at their home opener.
After losing five-straight games on the road to start the season, the Canucks crashed and burned on home ice, falling 5-1 to the red-hot Buffalo Sabres. Fans responded with a chorus of boos, while some went as far as throwing jerseys on the ice in protest. That may seem extreme so early in the season, but it wasn’t just about the first six games — this has been building for years.
After the game, Canucks president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford was asked about the possibility of a rebuild and his answer seemed all too familiar.
“Well, I think people have to realize how long rebuilds are,” said Rutherford. “You look at some of the teams that went through it and we look at them now how good they are, but there were a lot of tough years.
“I mean, we may very well be in a rebuild in the direction we’re going but ideally, we’d like to transition this team on the fly.”
Canucks fans have been hearing about retooling “on the fly” for years. The Canucks never once committed to a true rebuild in the last decade under former general manager Jim Benning, who traded away more draft picks than he acquired, including two first-round picks in back-to-back years to close out his tenure.
Frankly, fans don’t want to hear about how rebuilds are hard or take a long time — retooling on the fly has led to just as many “tough years” as a rebuild, with the Canucks missing the playoffs in six of the last seven seasons. The difference is, a team that has properly rebuilt will have a strong prospect pool and hope for the future after those tough years, while the Canucks seem stuck in the same pit of mediocrity in which they begun, with no prospect help on the horizon.
The other issue with Rutherford’s comments is that he’s wrong. Rebuilds don’t have to take a long time.
Just look at the team that ruined the Canucks’ home opener. After years of muddled efforts at rebuilding, the Sabres hired new management in 2020, then signalled a full-scale rebuild by trading Jack Eichel last November. Less than a year later, they have a young, exciting team that could make it to the playoffs this season.
The Los Angeles Kings started a rebuild in early 2019 when they traded Jake Muzzin to the Toronto Maple Leafs, then traded more veterans in 2020. They kept core veterans like Anze Kopitar, Drew Doughty, and Jonathan Quick, but supplemented them with arguably the best prospect pool in the NHL, built with the draft picks they acquired in trades. Last season, just three years after starting their rebuild, the Kings were back in the playoffs.
Then there’s the New York Rangers, who formally announced their rebuild with a letter to their fans in early 2018. There were some rough patches along the way, but they went to the Eastern Conference Final last season, just four years after their rebuild began. Now they’re a legitimate Stanley Cup contender.
That’s what fans want from the Canucks: true Stanley Cup contention. But the plan from Rutherford and general manager Patrik Allvin seems exactly the same as the previous management group: sneak into the playoffs and hope for the best. Instead of a new direction, they continued on the same tack and have quickly run aground.
A full tear-down rebuild may not be necessary at this point but the Canucks definitely need some course correction. Continuing down this path will lead to a lot more tough years than any rebuild.

Maria Sakkari shares strong message to her critics - Tennis World USA
World No 6 Maria Sakkari says she doesn't care about the outside talk as she underlined that she is still a top-10 player and also a participant of the upcoming WTA Finals. On Friday, Sakkari defeated Veronika Kudermetova 6-1 5-7 6-4 in the Guadalajara quarterfinal.
Sakkari and Kudermetova were playing directly for the final spot at the WTA Finals. Sakkari, 27, didn't even come near to winning her first Grand Slam title this year, but she did have some other notable results. "I don't care what people say about my season that has been a roller coaster.
All I know is I'm still a Top 10 player. I'm still one of the two players that might get the last spot," Sakkari told WTA Insider.

Sakkari loves Mexico
Last year, the WTA Finals took place in Guadalajara, Mexico.
A year ago, Sakkari debuted at the WTA Finals and reached the semifinal. This year, Sakkari clinched her WTA Finals ticket by making a strong result at this week's WTA 1000 event in Guadalajara. After clinching the last WTA Finals spot, Sakkari opened up about her love for Mexico.
"There is something special about this tournament, about the people, about how I feel about this place. I told my friends here, my Mexican friends, that I'll be supporting Mexico in the World Cup because Greece did not qualify.
I'll support my second favorite country," Sakkari said. Also, Sakkari said that Mexico reminds her of her native country, Greece. "I see all the restaurants being full every day. That reminds me a lot of Greece.
No matter if it's Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, they like to go out. They like their music. You're outgoing. You like good food. You like the good life as we do, in a good way, of course. I mean, everything. You're very passionate like we are," Sakkari added.

Auger-Aliassime wins European Open final for back-to-back ATP Tour titles - CBC Sports
Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime has been on quite a roll of late.
The Montreal native defeated Sebastian Korda of the United States 6-3, 6-4 to claim his second consecutive ATP Tour title win at the European Open on Sunday. Auger-Aliassime entered the tournament having won the Firenze Open last week.
"It's amazing you know, to win again, back-to-back tournaments, and to win for the first time here in Antwerp [Belgium] against a player like Sebi [Korda] who is a fantastic player — one of the greats to come," Auger-Aliassime said in his post-match interview.
"And it was a tough week really. I had to play many tough matches, tough physically. So, to push through and win today, it was amazing. I'm just super thrilled and happy to get another title."
Auger-Aliassime hit seven aces, five of which came in the opening set, and won 85 per cent of his first-serve points in the one hour 25-minute match. The 22-year-old saved two of Korda's four break point chances while converting on both of his own opportunities.

Auger-Aliassime wins European Open for 2nd consecutive ATP Tour title
Duration 3:21
Coming into the match, Auger-Aliassime had only been broken once in three matches.
The Canadian now holds a 2-1 edge over Korda in career matchups. The last time the two met, Korda defeated Auger-Aliassime 6-2, 6-2 at the Estoril Open in April.
"You got me good last time we played, so I'm happy I was able to get a win over you," Auger-Aliassime told Korda after the match. "You're such a great player, so keep going like this and good luck to you and your team for the rest of the year."
Auger-Aliassime, ranked 10th in the world, is now up to three ATP Tour titles for his career, having also won the Rotterdam Open in February. After losing his first eight career ATP Tour finals matches, he has since won three of four finals with all of his victories being in straight sets.
In the opening set, Auger-Aliassime earned his first service break at 3-2 where he was able to strengthen his lead using a drop shot, followed by a forehand winner down the line. After giving up one more game, Auger-Aliassime held to love in the final two to win the set.
Tied 2-2 in the second, Auger-Aliassime broke Korda's serve to take the lead. Having opened the set down 2-1, Auger-Aliassime never surrendered the lead again once up 3-2.

NHL Buzz: Slafkovsky out for Canadiens against Stars - NHL.com
Montreal Canadiens
Juraj Slafkovsky has an upper-body injury and will not be in the lineup against the Dallas Stars on Saturday (7 p.m. ET; NHLN, CITY, SNE, TVAS, BSSWX).
The forward, who was the No. 1 pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, scored his first NHL goal -- his first point in five games -- in a 6-2 win against the Arizona Coyotes on Thursday. He is day to day.
Forward Rem Pitlick returns after being a healthy scratch for three games. He took Slafkovsky's place on the fourth line with Jake Evans and Mike Hoffman in the morning skate at Bell Centre.
"(Evans) came up to me and said, 'Let's go tonight,'" Pitlick said. "There's a comfort level there and I think we know each other's game to a degree, and I'm excited to be back with him."
Injured defenseman Joel Edmundson (lower-body) and forward Joel Armia (upper body) took part in the morning skate, though both remain out.
"It's a soft entrance because it's not intense," coach Martin St. Louis said. "There's not much body contact or touches with reads that they're going to make in a practice environment. So I think it's a good way to reintroduce them." -- Sean Farrell
Winnipeg Jets
Nikolaj Ehlers was placed on injured reserve Friday, retroactive to Oct. 18, because of an undisclosed injury. The forward is expected to miss 7-10 days.
Ehlers has not played the past two games since a 4-1 loss to the Dallas Stars on Oct. 17.
"It's not as bad as it could have been," coach Rick Bowness said Saturday. "Not as bad as the worst fears. He's going to be OK. We're hoping a week to 10 days. It shouldn't be any longer than the projected [timeline]. There's nothing underlying there that it's going to make this go a lot longer. At this stage, we're still thinking the original time frame."
Ehlers joined the Jets for the morning skate at Ball Arena in Denver prior to a 4-3 overtime win Wednesday, leaving early. He also missed a 5-2 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday.
Ehlers has three assists this season. He had 55 points (28 goals, 27 assists) in 62 games last season.
Winnipeg recalled forward Dominic Toninato from Manitoba of the American Hockey League on Friday.
Bowness will coach his first game with the Jets when they host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday (7 p.m. ET; CBC, CITY, SNO, SNW, SNP, ESPN+, SN NOW). He has not been with the team since testing positive for COVID-19 on Oct. 14. -- Darrin Bauming
Minnesota Wild
Jordan Greenway was placed on injured reserve with an upper-body injury Saturday.
The forward left in the first period of a 4-3 win against the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday. It was his season debut after offseason shoulder surgery.
The Wild recalled forward Mason Shaw from Iowa of the American Hockey League on Friday.
Jon Merrill was activated off IR and made his season debut against the Boston Bruins. The defenseman was injured playing at the 2022 IIHF World Championship in May.
Defenseman Andrej Sustr was placed on waivers Friday for purposes of sending him to Iowa.
Chicago Blackhawks
Petr Mrazek did not practice Saturday and is day to day after sustaining a groin strain in Chicago's 4-3 overtime win against the Detroit Red Wings on Friday.
"Fortunately, they didn't think it was as bad as they thought last night," Blackhawks coach Luke Richardson said. "For a goaltender, a groin strain, it's still serious but they thought it was encouraging how he reacted today, especially with his past. He's had injuries before. So that was good news, and even though he's day to day he'll be out for a bit."
Mrazek was limited to 20 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs last season because of a groin injury.
Mrazek saved 15 of 18 shots through two periods, then did not return Friday. Alex Stalock played the third period and he saved all 10 shots. Stalock will start in goal when the Blackhawks host the Seattle Kraken on Sunday (2 p.m. ET; NBCSCH, ROOT-NW, ESPN+, SN NOW). Arvid Soderblom, recalled from Rockford of the American Hockey League on Friday, will back up Stalock. -- Tracey Myers
Pittsburgh Penguins
Jake Guentzel will travel with the Penguins for a five-game road trip while being evaluated for an upper-body injury, coach Mike Sullivan said.
The forward, who did not practice Friday, left a 6-1 win against the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday after being hit in the ear by a shot from Pittsburgh defenseman Kris Letang at 6:51 of the third period. That came after Guentzel took a high shoulder hit from Los Angeles forward Brendan Lemieux at 4:20.
Guentzel, left wing on the first line, has five points (three goals, two assists) in four games. He led the Penguins with 40 goals in 76 games last season.
"[Guentzel] is a great player, does a lot of stuff for us," captain Sidney Crosby said. "Not an easy guy to replace. So when you get injuries, you have to find ways to make up for the guys that you lose and what they bring. I think we'll try to do that collectively."
The trip begins against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday (7 p.m. ET; BSOH, ATTSN-PT, ESPN+, SN NOW).
Danton Heinen replaced Guentzel on a line with Crosby at center and right wing Rickard Rakell in practice Friday. Rakell took Guentzel's spot on the top power-play unit.

Ronaldo refused to come on as a substitute during Manchester United's game against Tottenham, ten Hag says - The Globe and Mail
Cristiano Ronaldo refused to come on as a substitute for Manchester United in its 2-0 win over Tottenham in the Premier League, United manager Erik ten Hag said Friday.
Ronaldo headed to the locker room before the final whistle of Wednesday’s game at Old Trafford in a show of dissent and has since been omitted from United’s squad for the trip to play Chelsea on Saturday.
Ten Hag held talks with Ronaldo on Friday and said the Portugal striker “remains an important part of the squad.”
However, Ten Hag said Ronaldo had to be disciplined for the sake of the culture within the team, having already been critical of the player and some of his teammates for leaving a preseason friendly against Rayo Vallecano early in July.
“I have to set standards and values, and control them,” Ten Hag said.
“I set a warning at the start of the season, and the next time there has to be consequences. Otherwise when you are living together, when you are playing together – and football is a team sport – you have to fulfill certain standards and I have to control it.”
The 37-year-old Ronaldo took to social media late Thursday to explain his behavior in the Tottenham game.
“I’ve always tried to set the example myself for the youngsters that grew in all the teams that I’ve represented,” Ronaldo wrote on Instagram. “Unfortunately that’s not always possible and sometimes the heat of the moment (gets) the best of us.”
Ronaldo trained away from the first team on Friday.

Robertson steals the show as Maple Leafs grab overtime win over Stars - TSN
TORONTO — Nick Robertson capped an emotional stretch with a moment he's dreamed of for a long time.
The 21-year-old scored his second goal of the night in his season debut at 3:46 of overtime Thursday as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Dallas Stars 3-2.
After breaking up a play at the other end of the rink, Robertson took a pass from Auston Matthews on a 3-on-1 rush and fired past Scott Wedgewood to cap the winger's best performance as a pro.
"It was exciting," Robertson said. "But now for me, it's just to keep going and keep fighting and earning every day."
The 53rd pick at the 2019 draft suited up for the first time in 2022-23 after getting sent to the minors despite a strong training camp because of salary cap concerns.
But after goaltender Matt Murray was placed on long-tern injured reserve, the door swung open for the Leafs to recall Robertson.
"It's been ups and down,” he said of the last few weeks. "To get sent down given cap space was definitely tough to grasp ... that was tough.
"But now to get a night like this, it kind of makes up for it."
Apart from singing Robertson's praise, Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe credited Matthews on the winner. No one inside Scotiabank Arena would have batted an eye if last season's 60-goal man had shot it himself.
"You've got the Rocket Richard Trophy winner down the pipe, and he makes the right play,” Keefe said. "He gets all the attention of the goalie and moves it over for Nick to finish it.
"A terrific moment."
Alexander Kerfoot had the other goal for Toronto (3-2-0), while Ilya Samsonov stopped 26 shots.
"Unbelievable ... first game in a season and two terrific goal," the Leafs netminder, who improved to 3-0-0, said of Robertson.
"He's a good shooter. Sometimes it hurts."
Michael Bunting added two assists for the Leafs, who got the win despite going 1-for-8 on the power play.
"That team doesn't give up much," Kerfoot said. "Our special teams weren't great. But we found a way."
Tyler Seguin and Luke Glendening replied for Dallas (3-0-1), which got 40 saves from Wedgewood in his first action of the season.
“They’ve got some skill guys," Stars head coach Peter DeBoer said. "When they’ve got the puck they're hard to defend.
"A good road point."
The Leafs were coming off a dismal 4-2 loss to Arizona — the NHL's 31st-ranked team last season — on Monday that resulted in Keefe delivering a strong public message for the second time in four games to start the schedule after also blasting Toronto on the heels of a 4-3 loss to Montreal, which finished 32nd overall in 2021-22.
The Stars, meanwhile, entered having outscored their opponents 13-3 through their first three contests.
Tied 1-1 through two periods, Toronto nudged in front 1:59 into the third period when Robertson made a nice play along the boards before eventually beating Wedgewood.
"He's dynamic offensively," Kerfoot said. "He showed that tonight."
Dallas got back even at 7:21 on a power play when Seguin fired from in close after Kerfoot went to the box for delay of game.
The play was initially waved off for goaltender interference, but DeBoer challenged the call. The sequence was eventually overturned after the NHL situation room determined Mitch Marner was responsible for the contact on Samsonov.
It marked the second time in as many outings the Leafs have been on the wrong end of a review. Kerfoot had a potential late tying goal negated Monday against Arizona because of a hand pass by Toronto defenceman Morgan Rielly.
"I don’t know the rules anymore," said Marner, who was also in the middle of the review controversy three nights earlier. "It's complicated."
Dallas opened the scoring at 14:45 of a tentative first when Glendening banged a rebound past Samsonov.
Wedgewood, who got the call with Dallas giving Jake Oettinger the night off, didn't have a ton to do at the other end until Toronto broke through on the power play when Kerfoot scored at 2:31 of the middle period.
Robertson would grab the headlines from there.
"I want to be consistent," he said. "I want to play well and help the team.
“I don't want to just have a night.”
BROTHERLY LOVE
Robertson faced his brother and fellow forward Jason, 23, for the second time in his career Thursday.
The Robertson brothers also shared the same NHL ice last March when Toronto beat Dallas 4-0.

Keefe clears the air with Leafs ‘elite players’ - TSN
TSN SportsCentre Reporter Mark Masters reports on the Toronto Maple Leafs, who practised at Ford Performance Centre on Wednesday ahead of their game against the Dallas Stars on Thursday.
Following Monday's 4-2 loss, Sheldon Keefe didn't hold back in explaining how his talented group came up short against the rebuilding Arizona Coyotes.
"The difference between us and Arizona is that we have elite players," the coach stated bluntly. "Our elite players didn't play like elite players. They couldn't make the difference."
After a day off on Tuesday, Keefe checked in with his top players on Wednesday.
"He explained what he meant to say and how it came out and I'll leave it at that," winger Mitch Marner said. "We have closed doors here for a reason and we have talks without you for a reason. We had that talk today. We understand. We're grown men."
"I used some of the wrong words to try to describe what I was trying to describe," Keefe said, "which is that the difference in the game was just, we weren't able to produce, whether it's power play or 5-on-5. And that's really the difference, with all the puck time we had. But by no means was I meaning anything beyond that."
Auston Matthews broke into a smile when asked about the coach's initial critique.
"This is my seventh year here now and I kind of understand how it works," the 25-year-old centre said. "I think the conversations that go on behind closed doors without media and stuff are more generally discussions rather than just harping on guys."
Added Marner, "I don't think anyone was hurt by the comments or anything like that."
Keefe was asked if the players are so delicate these days that he now has to choose his words carefully.
"I don't think we're at that point," he said. "I think we should always be cognizant of the words we're using and how we're communicating. At times, emotions maybe get the best of us in this game or any competitive environment. You want to communicate well. That's an important piece as a leader."
---
Matthews has produced one goal, which represents his only even-strength point so far this season.
"We're four games in," the reigning Hart Trophy winner said. "Obviously, nothing's going to be perfect ... Still trying to find it a bit offensively. Just kind of working through some stuff and getting in a rhythm. Sometimes things kind of take time."
Matthews, Marner and Michael Bunting were among the most dominant lines in hockey last season. So, what's missing right now?
"They haven't been able to get to the net with the same regularity," Keefe observed. "Auston hasn't had as many clear looks at the net. The message to them is similar to the rest of the team. Don't get frustrated. Look to challenge and attack to the inside. Don't get comfortable with possession and time in the offensive zone. Challenge the net and look to make it difficult on the opposition."
Marner believes he and Bunting can do a better job creating space for Matthews.
"When you have a goal scorer like Auston a lot of people really want to take him away," Marner noted. "When that's happening, we got to take our ice. We got to take it to the net and challenge the opponents one-on-one a little more. We did that better last game. We got to infiltrate the inside a little more. I think that will just come."
"Those guys are going to be fine," stressed Keefe. "Whether it is 5-on-5 or power play, the rhythm is going to start to come. As things fall into place from there, all of a sudden, games aren't as close. You start to play with leads more consistently. The other teams start taking chances. Things start to fall into place. It is early here. We have to make sure to keep all of that in the proper perspective."
Matthews scored just once over his first six games last season. He finished with 60 goals and another Rocket Richard Trophy.
---
The Leafs are averaging 2.75 goals per game, which is tied for 23rd overall entering Wednesday's games. Toronto averaged 3.8 goals per game last season, which was second overall.
"It is fair to say that offensively we haven't found our rhythm yet," Keefe said. "At times, it has looked really good. At other times, not as much. That is probably the one thing I look at."
The team also started slow last season (2-4-1) before getting the offence in gear.
"Whether it is our individual players or our team, we had a record-setting regular season last year," Keefe said. "It took some time to get to that point. You do have that, but let's not settle on that. Let's be better than that."
The power play is converting 21.4 per cent of the time so far, which is tied for 15th overall entering Wednesday's games. Toronto scored on 27.3 per cent of its chances last season, which led the league.
The Leafs didn't generate anything on their first four chances against the Coyotes on Monday before finally cashing in on the fifth opportunity. At Wednesday's practice, the coaching staff provided the top unit with what Keefe called "a change of pace."
Matthews, Marner, John Tavares, William Nylander and Morgan Rielly started a drill with a five-on-one advantage. Assistant coach Spencer Carbery had his stop watch out and sent in a second penalty killer after some time had passed. Then a third penalty killer came in and eventually a fourth.
"The reason you do that is you're really trying to create opportunities for the speed of the puck in terms of the shots and passes," Keefe said. "With less disruption you can just get the rhythm and feel of the puck snapping around. So, it's a drill we do from time to time for those reasons and ultimately it settles into a natural five-on-four. Those guys have been practising a lot of five-on-four so we gave them a different look today."
The second unit did traditional five-on-four reps.
---
Jake Muzzin was placed on injured reserve after leaving Monday's game with a neck injury.
"He's doing what he can do," said Marner, who calls Muzzin probably his closest friend on the team. "If he does come back and play this year or whenever or whatever happens, you know, just make sure that he's going to be be able to do whatever he wants to do the rest of his life and enjoy the time with his family. I think that's the most important thing. Obviously, on the ice, for us, it's a big missing piece. He does a lot for us on and off the ice. Just calmness on the ice when he has the puck. Penalty-kill wise. Just the leadership he brings. All that kind of stuff. It's definitely a big piece that we'll be missing, but life off the ice is always more important."
Muzzin missed time with two concussions last season among other ailments.
"I am told it is not a head injury at all," Keefe said.
The team is still awaiting a timeline on this latest injury.
"Jake has had a number of injuries that have been a cause for concern for us," Keefe acknowledged. "Any time a player gets injured and has had as many injuries as Jake has had to deal with, there is concern, of course. How much concern? I don't know. It is probably still too early to say at this point. We had an event he was at last night and he looked like himself in a lot of ways. He is here in the facility today. We will let the process take care of itself with the medical folks and take it from there."
Muzzin missed most of the pre-season due to back discomfort.
---
With Muzzin out, Victor Mete will make his Leafs debut on Thursday night.
"I'm excited to play in my hometown with the Leafs jersey on," the 24-year-old from Woodbridge, Ont., said. "It will be a pretty cool moment for me."
"I expect him to skate and use his legs," said Keefe. "I am looking to see him be involved and increase the pace of play from the back end."
"He's got some great wheels on him," observed Marner, who played with Mete in the Ontario Hockey League. "He can get up and down the ice very well. He works with our system pretty well with how we like to get our D active, like to get them jumping in and joining the rush to make odd numbers."
Mete will start alongside Mark Giordano.
"I got to play with him a little bit in the pre-season so kind of know his game a little bit," Mete noted. "It's good to be playing with a veteran guy who knows the game well."
Rasmus Sandin will take Muzzin's spot alongside Justin Holl. The top pair remains Morgan Rielly with T.J. Brodie.
"It is a chance to move Rasmus back to his natural [left] side," said Keefe. "Mete and Giordano spent time through camp together. It is just a look we wanted to see. For now, we wanted to keep Rielly and Brodie together to have one consistent pair rather than going with three different pairs. I expect the guys will move around when the game actually begins, but it is a good starting point for us."
---
Sandin replaced Giordano as the quarterback on the second power-play unit. With Muzzin out, the team doesn't want to put too much on the 39-year-old's plate.
"Gio's minutes are naturally going to increase in all regards despite the fact that we still have him down on that ... third pair," Keefe said. "We are going to move him up and play him against tougher competition and take on more load on the penalty kill. At the same time, it gives us more opportunities to get more out of Rasmus."
---
Nick Robertson will make his season debut on Thursday. The left winger skated on the second line with Tavares and Nylander and also took reps with the second power-play unit.
"I expect him to play the way that he was," said Keefe, who pulled the 21-year-old aside at the end of practice. "That was my message to him. He has been through some things here in the last 10 days or so, but he was playing really well. He went down and played some games with the Marlies. He did a good job there. He should be confident. Just come in and take advantage of your opportunity. I think he is excited to play, no question."
Denis Malgin will be a healthy scratch.

Iranian athlete Elnaz Rekabi sent home, fate uncertain after competing without hijab - CBC News
An Iranian female competitive climber left South Korea on Tuesday after competing at an event in which she climbed without her nation's mandatory headscarf covering, authorities said. Farsi-language media outside of Iran warned she may have been forced to leave early by Iranian officials and could face arrest back home, which Tehran quickly denied.
The decision by Elnaz Rekabi to forgo the headscarf, or hijab, came as protests sparked by the Sept. 16 death in custody of a 22-year-old woman have entered a fifth week. Mahsa Amini was detained by the country's morality police over her clothing.
The demonstrations, drawing school-age children, oil workers and others to the street in over 100 cities, represent the most-serious challenge to Iran's theocracy since the mass protests surrounding its disputed 2009 presidential election.
A later Instagram post on an account attributed to Rekabi, a multiple medallist in competitions, described her not wearing a hijab as "unintentional," though it wasn't immediately clear whether she wrote the post or what condition she was in at the time.
Rekabi left Seoul on a Tuesday morning flight, the Iranian Embassy in South Korea said.
The BBC's Persian service, which has extensive contacts within Iran despite being banned from operating there, quoted an unnamed "informed source" who described Iranian officials as seizing both Rekabi's mobile phone and passport.

'A revolutionary moment,' says lawyer on Iran's protests
Duration 4:39
BBC Persian also said she initially had been scheduled to return on Wednesday, but her flight apparently had been moved up unexpectedly.
IranWire, another website focusing on the country founded by Iranian-Canadian journalist Maziar Bahari who once was detained by Iran, alleged that Rekabi would be immediately transferred to Tehran's notorious Evin prison after arriving in the country. Evin prison was the site of a massive fire this weekend that killed at least eight prisoners.
Later Tuesday, South Korea's Foreign Ministry acknowledged that the Iranian athlete and her team had left the country, without elaborating.
Apology in Instagram post
In a tweet, the Iranian Embassy in Seoul denied "all the fake, false news and disinformation" regarding Rekabi's departure on Tuesday. But instead of posting a photo of her from the Seoul competition, it posted an image of her wearing a headscarf at a previous competition in Moscow, where she took a bronze medal.
Rekabi didn't put on a hijab during Sunday's final at the International Federation of Sport Climbing's Asia Championship, according to the Seoul-based Korea Alpine Federation, the organizers of the event.
Federation officials said Rekabi wore a hijab during her initial appearances at the one-week climbing event. She wore just a black headband when competing Sunday, her dark hair pulled back in a ponytail; she had a white jersey with Iran's flag as a logo on it.
The later Instagram post, written in the first person, offered an apology on Rekabi's behalf. The post blamed a sudden call for her to climb the wall in the competition — although footage of the competition showed Rekabi relaxed as she approached and after she competed. It also sought to describe her travel back to Iran on Tuesday as being "on schedule."
Rekabi was on Iran's 11-member delegation, comprised of eight athletes and three coaches, to the event, according to the federation.
Federation officials said they were not initially aware of Rekabi competing without the hijab but looked into the case after receiving inquires about her. They said the event doesn't have any rules on requiring female athletes wearing or not wearing headscarves. However, Iranian women competing abroad under the Iranian flag always wear the hijab.
"Our understanding is that she is returning to Iran, and we will continue to monitor the situation as it develops on her arrival," the International Federation of Sport Climbing, which oversaw the event, said in a statement. "It is important to stress that athletes' safety is paramount for us and we support any efforts to keep a valued member of our community safe in this situation."
The federation said it had been in touch with both Rekabi and Iranian officials, but declined to elaborate on the substance of those calls when reached by The Associated Press. The federation also declined to discuss the Instagram post attributed to Rekabi and the claims in it.
Hundreds killed in protests
Rekabi, 33, has finished on the podium three times in the Asian Championships, taking one silver and two bronze medals for her efforts.
So far, human rights groups estimate that over 200 people have been killed in the protests and the violent security force crackdown that followed. Iran has not offered a death toll in weeks. Demonstrations have been seen in over 100 cities, according to the group Human Rights Activists in Iran. Thousands are believed to have been arrested.

Gathering information about the demonstrations remains difficult, however. Internet access has been disrupted for weeks by the Iranian government. Meanwhile, authorities have detained at least 40 journalists, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.
Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, have repeatedly alleged the country's foreign enemies are behind the ongoing demonstrations, rather than Iranians angered by Amini's death and the country's other woes.
Iranians have seen their life savings evaporate; the country's currency, the rial, plummet; and Tehran's nuclear deal with world powers has been reduced to tatters.

Habs vs. Penguins Top Six Minutes: Guhle stars in an entertaining game - Habs Eyes on the Prize
It’s Jeff Petry’s return game, and the reaction will probably be mixed to his return. We also have some new lines to watch, and Sean Monahan with Cole Caufield and Nick Suzuki should be interesting.
1st period
- Garry Galley twice in three days is too much Garry Galley.
- There are the boos for Petry, but he had to know those were coming.
- The game gets off to an inauspicious start as Danton Heinen beats Samuel Montembeault from a sharp angle.
- But it hit the crossbar and then the post, so we’ll just continue on.
- Chris Wideman gets a chance, then Josh Anderson makes a power move to the net with another, but those don’t turn into goals.
- A lesser man probably would have fallen to ice with the contact Anderson took, but the Powerhorse just wanted a goal.
- More sustained pressure from Montreal, getting zone time on every shift now. This time it’s a strong shift from Cole Caufield all over the ice. A good offence really is the best defence.
- Petry gets his video tribute and a cool ovation — quickly followed by more boos.
- Sidney Crosby launches what starts a promising Penguins rush, but Kaiden Guhle’s stick quickly puts an end to that, and it’s another great chance for Caufield at the opposite end. Is he going to make it back-to-back multi-goal games at home this season?
- Nice play by Arber Xhekaj to win the pull along the half-wall and then look cross-ice for a scoring chance. Last season that would have just been fired at Casey DeSmith’s crest by a Habs blue-liner.
- A really impressive start for Montreal. Now they need a goal to show for it.
- Dadonov nearly knocks in his own rebound on yet another rush to the net.
- Caufield is a man possessed in this period, winning pucks along the boards and slinging them out front. He must have read Jura Slafkokvský’s scouting report and decided to try out that style.
- Or he wants to entice Crosby to come join his line in a year or two....
- Great toe save by Montembeault on Pittsburgh’s first real chance since the double doink.
- Caufield may get to 10 shots in this game.
2nd period
- The last time Caufield looked this good he scored 30 seconds after the first intermission. Will he do that again?
- The first chance goes to Brendan Gallagher, who hits the post and sees the puck pushed out by an oblivious DeSmith.
- A lazy cross-ice pass is given a kick in the butt by Evgeni Malkin’s release, and Montembeault is beaten far-side after sliding too far.
- Now the Penguins power play that’s operating at 40% goes to work trying to double the lead.
- Habs are playing keepaway so far. Good plays from Kaiden Guhle and Jordan Harris to keep the opponent at bay.
- Now Malkin scores again as we get back to five-on-five. Too many unchecked Penguins at the top of the crease.
- A nice shift from Kirby Dach, Jonathan Drouin, and Anderson nearly gets Montreal on the board. There’s been a lot of “nearly” the last three games.
- Gallagher gets robbed by DeSmith’s glove. They will score at some point.
- Penguins power play/Montreal’s penalty kill back to work
- Harris just misses Suzuki for a short-handed breakaway chance
- Now Suzuki draws a penalty just as their own comes to an end, as he forces Petry to haul him down after a toe-drag.
- We’ll finish that thought after this 18-minute break
3rd period
- It wasn’t on the power play, but the Habs do get their early goal, thanks in large part to Kaiden Guhle. The rookie’s excellent zone exit directly led to Suzuki’s first chance, then the captain skated around to the opposite side of the net to put it in.
- Arber Xhekaj heads to the box for a high stick.
- More excellent penalty-killing from the Habs. First a chance for Jake Evans, then Sean Monahan. Massive improvement from what it looked like last year. All it needed was a few defencemen who had never played an NHL game before.
- On a third short-handed rush, Petry is forced to take another penalty.
- Maybe Montreal should play the whole 60 minutes down a man?
- Ryan Poehling goes for a short-handed chance, splitting the D, but Montembeault is there.
- The Habs just aren’t as good with more than four players on the ice. Bobbles from Drouin and Hoffman bring the power play to an end.
- Josh Anderson comes close to tying it up with under three minutes to go, but DeSmith saves it with his toe.
- A timeout to get a look with the best offensive players on the ice with an O-zone faceoff.
- And it works! Caufield gets his goal on a perfect cross-crease pass from Drouin.
- And it’s another point for Guhle. He probably should be the first star of the game tonight.
- Habs don’t quit looking for the winner, and come close on a couple of occasions, but can’t find one.
Overtime
- Habs get a well-deserved point for their effort
- Now we get to see Guhle at three-on-three, out there for the first shift.
- I think he skated two full lengths of the rink there, making several critical plays.
- Habs to the power play as Petry gets a hat trick of penalties in his return.
- Caufield gets a perfect pass but hits the left elbow.
- And Kirby Dach wins it! What an overtime performance from Montreal.
- Undefeated at home. Next they host the Coyotes on Thursday.
