French Open 2022 - Menstrual cramps thwart Zheng Qinwen Roland Garros dream in Iga Swiatek fightback - Eurosport COM

Chinese teenage Zheng Qinwen's suffered menstrual cramps in her fourth-round match against Iga Swiatek as the Polish world number one fought back for a place in the quarter-finals.

19-year-old Zheng stunned fans as she won a first-set tie-break to claim the opening set in her match against world number one Swiatek.

Swiatek had looked unbeatable in the tournament until that moment and the teenager looked like she might spring an unlikely upset.

But after dropping serve twice in the opening three games of the second set, Zheng took a medical time out to have her back massaged on court before returning from the locker room with her thigh strapped.

Swiatek then took the second set 6-0, before taking the decider 6-2.

And Zheng admitted that 'girl things' had caused her the most trouble on court and derailed her challenge.

"Yeah, the leg was also tough. That compared to the stomach was easy...I cannot play my tennis, (my) stomach was too painful," Zheng, ranked 74 in the world, told reporters.

"It's just girls' things, you know. The first day is always so tough and then I have to do sport and I always have so much pain in the first day. And I couldn't go against my nature.

"I wish I can be a man on court, but I cannot in that moment...I really wish I can be (a) man (so) that I don't have to suffer from this."

But despite defeat, Zheng insisted she was happy with her performance and relished the challenge against Swiatek who has now won her last 31 matches.

"If I don't talk about today, I'm happy with my performance (on) this run," she added.

"And to play against the number one in the world, I felt I really enjoyed (it) on the court.

"If I don't have my stomach (pain) I think I could enjoy more, like to run better and to hit harder, to give more effort on court. It's a pity that I couldn't give what I want to give today.

"I just want (it so that) next time I play against her, I (am in) perfect shape."

French Open 2022: Tsitsipas tearfully fronts media after loss - Yahoo Sport Australia

Stefanos Tsitsipas was close to tears after being knocked out of the French Open.

A tearful Stefanos Tsitsipas says he has little option but to simply get better after his shock ousting at the French Open.

The fourth seed was bundled out of Roland Garros in four sets by Danish rising star Holger Rune in the fourth round 5-7 6-3 3-6 4-6, just a year after making the final.

WOW: French Open's shock move against Rafa Nadal for Novak Djokovic clash

'SHOULD BE ASHAMED': Fury over Toni Nadal act at French Open

It was a bitter blow for the Greek world No.4, with a drop in the rankings likely to be on the horizon as a result.

Emotions were clearly running high for the 23-year-old after the match.

Tsitsipas said he had simply not adapted quickly enough to the pressure Rune had been able to place on him, and failed to place the Dane under any pressure himself.

Admitting he was feeling frustrated on court amid the stiff opposition from Rune, Tsitsipas said he had been unable to overcome the mental hurdles required for victory.

"I was struggling a lot the last couple of days in terms of finding my rhythm," he said.

"I was very nervous on the court, being frustrated a lot, and I knew I was this way, but I couldn't stop being like this.

"Of course, I knew I'm going to have to play difficult opponents that know how to play on this surface, but mentally, physically, tennis-wise, I felt good.

"It's just that I had a few troubles in practice. Again, back to frustration, back to not understanding certain things and certain patterns that I was trying to impose.

"You know, you do have this in the back of your head, having kind of changed a little bit of that equipment, playing with something that has helped you a lot last year get to a pretty good result, finals for the first time, it kind of stays back in your head that maybe I shouldn't have done that.

"But no blame there, I think it actually helps me and I just hope it serves its purpose and the way I want it to be in the next couple of weeks because I want to get as many points as possible."

Tsitsipas ousted from French Open in fourth round boilover

Tsitsipas found himself on the back foot early, giving away the first set, but he rallied well in the second and looked to have wrested control of the match.

But Rune fought back with a high energy display in the remaining two sets to run over Tsitsipas and set up a quarter-final clash against Norway's Casper Ruud.

The world No.40 outplayed his rank, and Tsitsipas said he was frustrated with himself for not adapting to Rune's tactics early enough.

"It's kind of strange, I don't get to face that very often from someone," Tsitsipas said.

"But then suddenly [he] seems to be playing amazing, which is a good thing, of course.

"He is a very emotional player, he can play great, he absolutely deserves this victory, played better, faced crucial tough moments better.

"But I can see something different next time with this opponent. I'm pretty convinced I can do way better.

"This is not where I've maxed out, let's say. I didn't give myself the opportunity to max out. It's not that he didn't give me... I didn't give myself the opportunity to go all the way, and that is a shame."

Tsitsipas was still chastising himself even in the post-game press conference for not being quicker to adjust.

“I wasn't really applying a lot of pressure, it was ridiculous at a point, and again I was stubborn, I was stubborn to change it, I didn't want to change because it has helped me before, it has brought good results," he said.

"But again, like I need to adjust way quicker, it's too late for this stuff."

Canada's Leylah Fernandez advances to French Open quarter-finals for 1st time - CBC Sports

There will be one Canadian in the Roland Garros singles quarter-finals this year, after Leylah Fernandez edged out American Amanda Anisimova 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in their fourth-round match Sunday in Paris, France.

Fellow Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime came oh, so close to joining her in the men's final eight, only to fall just short.

In an epic against 13-time champion Rafael Nadal that was arguably the best match of the 2022 tournament so far and the finest match of the 21-year-old Auger-Aliassime's career — even in defeat — Nadal showed his champion's mettle at the very end of the four-hour, 20-minute epic to squeeze through 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

For Fernandez, the opportunities abound in a decimated women's singles draw that lost nine of its top 10 seeds in the first week.

Only world No. 1 Iga Swiatek remains. She's in the other half, and the two could only meet in the final.

"It was a very hard match, an incredible match for the both of us. I think we brought a high level," Fernandez said of the win over Anisimova.

Canadian Leylah Fernandez defeated American Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals in Paris for the first time in her career.

The American was a women's singles semifinalist at age 17, in 2019, the year 16-year-old Fernandez won the junior girls' title.

Since then, their careers have gone in somewhat opposite directions.

"I'm just glad that today I was able to fight through some difficult moments and just enjoy the game as much as possible," Fernandez added.

For the Laval, Que., native based in Florida, the next challenge will be No. 59 ranked Martina Trevisan.

Trevisan, a 28-year-old from Italy, was an improbable quarterfinalist in the 2020 edition of Roland Garros held before few fans, at the peak of the pandemic and in chilly October Paris weather.

"We don't have many lefthanders on tour, so I think it will be a tricky match, like every single match is going to be tricky," Fernandez said. "We are just going to have to find solutions, just find a way to play against a left-hander."

Fernandez is the first Canadian woman to make the Roland Garros quarter-finals since Eugenie Bouchard in 2014.

Auger-Aliassime pushes Nadal to 5th set

Auger-Aliassime was looking to be the first men's quarter-finalist in Paris since Milos Raonic, also in 2014.

He threw the kitchen sink at Nadal tactically in that endeavour.

The Canadian served well — very well, for most of the match. He was aggressive with his forehand, used the drop shot and came into the net a lot.

On a number of occasions, his brilliance even was rewarded by a racquet clap of appreciation by Nadal.

Nadal battles past Auger-Aliassime at French Open

Rafael Nadal had to fight for a five-set victory over Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime and will now face Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals.

And that level of play forced Nadal to raise his own. And there's no doubt the 35-year-old will struggle to rev his aging, legendary machine back up when he faces world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.

"He was serving well in the fifth set, playing well behind the serve, being very aggressive. And I think he took it even higher, one step further, from 4-3," Auger-Aliassime said. "Honestly, I didn't play a bad game. I did what I had to do. He was dictating, aggressive when he needed to and also defending really well on two points where I came to the net.

"Just a great game from him and then, again, he showed great composure at the end to serve for the match. I was still there trying to win, but he played really well."

Auger-Aliassime kept his head up all the way — always believing, at least from the start of the fourth set after Nadal played a nearly untouchable level in the second and third sets, that he had a chance.

"He's a great player, without a doubt — one of the best players of the world. Very young with a lot of power, great mobility. I think he did a lot of things well. He has been improving every year," Nadal said. "He has a huge serve, puts a lot of pressure, and I was not able to push him back. So I'm very happy about [my] attitude at the end; I was able to play more aggressive, was able to go more often [to] the net."

Afterwards, a subdued Auger-Aliassime felt as you would expect someone to feel who just went 12 rounds with Nadal on Court Philippe Chatrier to feel: pretty stiff.

"A lot of effort, a lot of concentration. At one point — even though he raised the level of his game — there were a few dips. Physically, mentally, and I lost my intentions at one point," Auger-Aliassime said. "But despite everything, I managed to come back when necessary, to serve well again."

A week ago, Auger-Aliassime's big accomplishment at Roland Garros was to win a main-draw match for the first time in his career.

Reaching the fourth round and giving the 13-time champion everything he could handle for more than four hours was beyond most expectations.

Next for him is the grass, a surface on which — unlike the clay at Roland Garros — he has had a lot of success.

Auger-Aliassime's first grass-court tournament is scheduled in Hertogenbosch, Netherlands in a week's time. And if he recovers well, he intends to play it.

As for Fernandez, she still has work to do in Paris.

Finland defeats Canada in overtime to win IIHF World Championship - Sportsnet.ca

Sakari Manninen scored in overtime to lift host Finland to a 4-3 win over Canada in a wild gold-medal game at the men’s world hockey championships on Sunday.

Finland also received two goals from Mikael Granlund and another from Joel Armia. Dylan Cozens, Zach Whitecloud and Max Comtois scored for Canada, while Matt Barzal chipped in with three assists.

The host Finns held a 3-1 lead late in the third before the Canadians struck for two goals with their goaltender pulled.

Whitecloud scored with 2:12 remaining to put Canada to within one goal before Comtois forced three-on-three overtime with the tying goal with 84 seconds remaining in regulation.

Manninen's winner was scored on the power play six minutes into the extra frame after Thomas Chabot was whistled for a hooking minor.

It's the fourth time that Finland has won the world championship.

Canada led 1-0 entering the third period after Cozens opened the scoring on a Canadian power play four minutes into the second period.

Granlund, who plays for the NHL’s Nashville Predators, evened the score early in the third on a five-on-three advantage with Canada’s Noah Gregor (tripping) and Cole Sillinger (high-sticking) both sitting in the box.

Canadian goaltender Chris Driedger suffered an injury on the play and was replaced by backup Matt Tomkins, who quickly surrendered a second power-play goal to Backlund.

Earlier on Sunday, Czechia hammered the United States 8-4 to win the bronze medal as David Pastrnak scored a hat trick, all in the third period.

Real Madrid claims 14th Champions League title with win over Liverpool - Sportsnet.ca

PARIS (AP) -- Real Madrid became European champion for a record-extending 14th time after beating Liverpool 1-0 in a Champions League final that started 37 minutes late because of disturbing crowd issues outside the Stade de France on Saturday.

Brazil winger Vinicius Junior applied a close-range finish in the 59th minute from Federico Valverde's drive across the face of goal, securing a win that gave Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti a record fourth European Cup title.

While Madrid completed a Champions League-La Liga double, Liverpool finished a season that promised so much -- a week ago, it was in contention for an unprecedented quadruple of major trophies -- with the two domestic cups in England.

The English team couldn't find a way past Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who tipped Sadio Mane's first-half shot onto the post and produced an even better save to turn away Mohamed Salah's effort in the 81st.

Madrid cemented its status as the king of European soccer, given the Spanish giant owns double the number of European Cups as the No. 2 on the list, AC Milan. Liverpool stayed on six.

Pre-match crowd issues marred this final, though, and are sure to be the focus of an investigation by UEFA and authorities in the coming days.

With 45 minutes remaining before kickoff, there were still long lines of Liverpool fans waiting to be allowed into the stadium, and there were sporadic instances of fans breaking through security and sprinting onto the concourse.

The Associated Press saw two fans _ one was wearing Liverpool attire -- wrestled to the ground by stewards and bundled out of the gates, while others managed to get all the way into the arena.

The situation started to get out of hand as riot police deployed tear gas on Liverpool supporters in the lines, while some fans were seen climbing the fences. Officers with batons and riot shields ran from gate to gate to prevent pockets of fans forcing their way into the stadium without showing tickets.

About 15 minutes before the scheduled kickoff of 9 p.m. local time (1900 GMT), an announcement was made that there would be a delay, blaming the late arrival of fans to the stadium. It was greeted by jeers inside the stadium, given those fans had already endured long queues.

The scenes were reminiscent of the chaos outside Wembley Stadium before the European Championship final last year between England and Italy.

Kickoff delayed in Champions League final; fan violence outside stadium - Sportsnet.ca

PARIS (AP) — Kickoff in the Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid was delayed by 15 minutes on Saturday amid fan violence outside the Stade de France in Paris.

There have been sporadic instances of soccer fans, apparently without tickets, breaking through security and attempting to get into the stadium. The Associated Press saw two fans — one was wearing Liverpool attire — wrestled to the ground by stewards and bundled out of the gates.

Another fan evaded stewards and was seen sprinting through the concourse and into the bottom level of the stadium.

Footage on social media showed fans climbing over fences.

There were long lines of Liverpool fans still outside the stadium when there was 40 minutes to kickoff.

About 15 minutes before the scheduled kickoff of 1900 GMT (9 p.m. local time), an announcement was made that there would be a delay because of the late arrival of fans to the stadium.

Never mind the disallowed goal, Flames couldn’t keep up with the Oilers’ track meet - Sportsnet.ca

The Calgary Flames built their reputation on Darryl Sutter Hockey – that heavy-forechecking, quality-defending style that smothers opponents and wins back pucks, which makes the burden of creating offence a struggle for their opposition. On the backs of that plan, the Flames allowed the third-fewest goals during the regular season. They were a force.

The Edmonton Oilers can be given no greater compliment than the way the Flames were reduced to playing in the Battle of Alberta, chasing more and more offence to try to keep up with an Oilers top-six that simply could not be stopped. There was a desperation there that we hadn’t seen from the Flames, and by Game 5 I kept thinking, “Just catch the pass and shoot it” rather than trying to rush a one-timer on a hot pass or on one that was in a bad spot. Their usual poise disappeared.

A look at a few of those fanned one-timers in Game 5:

By the end, little of the Flames' identity was left, not the physical play, not the elite goaltending, or the line of Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk, which was arguably the best in the league in 2021-22.

The Flames played with offensive impatience, which left room for the Oilers to fly back the other way. Too often it became a track meet, and with that style imposed on the series, the Flames, ironically, were cooked. Rush chances were 11-3 for the Oilers in Game 5.

Apparently, there was also a goal disallowed, but the things below are about how the Oilers got the Flames in a position where one play not going their way could mean the end of the series, and their season.

How did the Oilers do it?

McDavid-Draisaitl

I was tempted to skip over this obvious point because you, the reader, are well aware of what Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl do. But I just couldn’t. How could I? Everything about the Oilers hinged on this, with two players combining for **checks stats** – no, that can’t be right – **checks again** 29 points in five games. They set all kinds of records.

The Flames got much better at slowing down McDavid in Games 4 and 5, but it took all their focus and attention, which opened them up everywhere else.

Depth contributions from Kane, Hyman, RNH

In Game 5, Zach Hyman had one goal and two assists for three points, he was plus-4, he had seven shots, he played nearly 24 minutes, he led the team in hits, he had a big blocked shot, there’s just not much more I can say about this guy.

In the summer, I use a plastic oar to stir my kids’ kiddie pool and get the water going in a “whirlpool,” and that’s what happens when Hyman is on the ice. He’s an oar, and he gets the play going in the direction he’s skating whenever he’s out there.

With McDavid and Draisaitl sucking up all the attention – as they have in years past – the question was asked of the Oilers depth: when those guys see all the best defending, can you capitalize on your extra space or weaker opposition?

Hyman said yes. Evander Kane said yes; he’s on pace to threaten the all-time playoff goals record of 19 (he has 12, so if they Oilers play two more rounds ... ?). Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had six points in five games; the Nuge said yes too.

McDavid and Draisaitl were like a collective boxer doing so much damage to the body in the early rounds that their opposition starts to drop their hands, while these guys were suddenly free to take shots at the head.

Good coaching

I thought Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft showed a willingness to be flexible and go away from what’s worked if it wasn’t working on a given night. Case in point: Kane had been on an unbelievable run alongside McDavid, as mentioned above. It would’ve been easy to leave him in that role, no matter what. This is speculation on my part, but I don’t think the Oil loved how Kane defended a Flames set breakout early in the game, followed by his positioning on the Andrew Mangiapane goal. Whether it was that or something else, Woodcroft bumped Kane off that line for Hyman, who did … all the things I mentioned in the section above. It was the perfect change in a game McDavid didn’t have an inch of room and couldn’t create much or drive play. Hyman did it for that line at times.

I also given Woodcroft credit for sticking with what would give the team the best chance in the big picture: Mike Smith over Mikko Koskinen. After Game 1, he could’ve bailed on Smith and been justified. Then Game 2 starts with two softies, where you’d think he’d have a hair trigger, but he stuck with Smith yet again. The roller coaster Mike Smith Experience includes the type of highs you need to get by great opponents, and Woodcroft gave their team the chance to see that through.

An exposed weakness, and a surprise goaltending slump

Flames coach Darryl Sutter gave a telling response in a post-game when he talked about their “inexperienced defence.” They don’t have guys who’ve seen deep runs playing D for them, and, in the end, the little defensive gaffes made just enough room for the Oilers (a miscommunication with Noah Hanifin and Elias Lindholm on the OT winner cost them) to expose them. In Game 5, the Oilers had 18 slot shots to the Flames' nine.

The Flames needed goaltending to bail them out, but Edmonton has had Jacob Markstrom’s number all year. He ended up posting just an .852 save percentage in the series, and the crease was supposed to be where the Flames had a clear advantage. I haven’t heard it said much lately, but McDavid is in an awkward body position on that OT winner and doesn’t get a ton on it. They needed a few more saves from Markstrom.

When all is said and done, the Battle of Alberta was decided because the Oilers' best players had their 'A' games, and that dictated everything that came next from the Flames. Calgary was reduced to counterpunching, when it had been used to coming out swinging.

In the NHL, the sport’s all-time greats almost always find their way to a championship, as at some level they become all their opponents can think about and the team around them is free to rise up. That’s what’s been happening for the Oilers, and no matter who their next opponent is, that game plan has every chance of being effective in yet another round.

CFLPA voting on new tentative agreement with CFL on Thursday - TSN

The CFL and CFL Players' Association have reached another tentative seven-year agreement.

According to a league source, the two sides hammered out a second agreement in principle Thursday, two days after CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie unveiled the league's final offer to its players.

The source spoke on the condition of anonymity as neither the CFL nor the CFLPA have confirmed the deal.

The new agreement is pending ratification by both the CFL Players' Association membership and the league's board of governors. According to two sources, the players will vote on the deal Thursday night.

Time is of the essence as the CFL pre-season schedule is slated to kick off Friday night with two games.

On Monday, the players voted against a tentative deal that the union had recommended they accept. The CFLPA is also recommending the ratification of Thursday's tentative agreement.

According to sources, CFL teams will have seven Canadian starters and 21 in total on rosters this year. In 2023, that number increases to eight with one being a nationalized Canadian — an American who has spent either five years in the CFL or at least three with the same team.

Clubs will also be able to rotate two nationalized Canadians for up to 49 per cent of snaps. Teams can move to three nationalized Canadians in 2024 but the two franchises that play the most Canadians at the end of the season will receive additional second-round draft picks.

And the seven pure Canadian starters per game will remain intact throughout the term of deal, which can be reopened after five years when the CFL's broadcast agreement with TSN expires.

The CFL will also provide $1.225 million in a ratification pool for players.

But Canadian Justin Palardy, a former kicker who spent time with five CFL teams from 2010-15, took to social media to voice his displeasure with the deal.

"Like I said on another tweet, what's the point of drafting more (Canadians) if we're getting rid of Canadian starters?" he tweeted. "You may think it's a terrific idea, doesn't mean it makes sense."

The two sides had been at odds regarding the Canadian ratio.

Last Wednesday, the CFL and CFLPA reached a tentative seven-year agreement, ending a four-day strike by seven of the league's nine teams. At first glance, there seemed to be many positives for the players, including a revenue-sharing model, the ability to reopen the pact in five years once the CFL signed a new broadcast deal, and veteran players having the ability to negotiate partially guaranteed contracts.

But the agreement also called for CFL teams to increase the number of Canadian starters from seven to eight. The extra would've also been a nationalized Canadian.

In addition, three other nationalized Canadians could play up to 49 per cent of snaps. And the deal didn't include a ratification bonus.

On Tuesday, Ambrosie unveiled an amended proposal that included a $1-million ratification pool and the abolition of the three nationalized Canadians playing 49 per cent of snaps. However, it also reduced the number of Canadian starters to seven, including one nationalized Canadian.

Not only did Ambrosie say it was the CFL's final offer, but it was good until midnight ET on Thursday, given the league's exhibition schedule was slated to begin Friday night with two games. Ambrosie added if the players rejected the offer and opted to go back on strike, they'd be served notice to vacate their respective training-camp facilities.

It marked the second time Ambrosie had gone public with a final contract offer to the CFLPA. On May 14, he posted a letter to fans on the league's website detailing the league's proposal to players hours before the former CBA was set to expire.

The next day, players on seven CFL teams opted against reporting to training camp and went on strike. The Edmonton Elks and Calgary Stampeders both opened camp as schedule because they weren't in a legal strike position, as per provincial labour laws, at the time.

It marked just the second work stoppage in league history and first since 1974.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published May 26, 2022.

Canada Soccer cancels controversial exhibition game against Iran - CBC News

Canada Soccer says it is cancelling a controversial exhibition game against Iran set for next month in Vancouver.

The international match — scheduled for June 5 as part of preparations for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year — drew the scorn of the families of those who died aboard Flight PS752 when the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) shot down the plane in 2020.

All 176 passengers and crew members on board the aircraft were killed, including 85 Canadians and permanent residents.

The families said the exhibition match was an insult to those still seeking justice for their loved ones — especially given persistent concerns about the IRGC's possible ties to Iran's team.

"We are happy," said Hamed Esmaeilion, spokesperson for the association representing victims' families in Canada. "This is the right thing to do ... We were worried about IRGC officers coming to Canada, normalizing Canada's relationship with Iran ..."

Canada Soccer made the announcement Thursday on Twitter. It promised to provide additional details to all ticket purchasers. The soccer organization has not yet explained why it cancelled the match or responded to victims' relatives who have written letters demanding answers.

Esmaeilion said Canada Soccer is not being transparent and that the public deserves to know why this match was booked in the first place, who was behind it and why it's being cancelled now.

According to an Iranian state media outlet, Saeed Khatibzadeh, spokesperson for Iran's foreign ministry, on Tuesday accused Canada of politicizing the upcoming match. Khatibzadeh told Press TV that if the match is cancelled, Canada Soccer would be held responsible for any violations of its agreement with Iran's team.

CBC News reported Tuesday that the head of Iran's team said Canada Soccer would be paying Iran's soccer federation $400,000 for the game.

The team's director, Hamid Estili, told Iranian state-affiliated media that the payment would mark the first time in more than two decades that Iran's soccer federation made a profit off a friendly match.

Canada Soccer did not confirm or deny that quoted amount but said it's standard practice to pay visiting teams appearance fees to cover expenses.

Canada Soccer received more than $3 million in federal funding this fiscal year. The government says none of that money went toward the match.

Minister of Sport Pascale St-Onge said in a statement to CBC News that the government "commends Canada Soccer for making this decision" and is looking forward to cheering on Team Canada during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Ukraine's ambassador-designate to Canada Yulia Kovaliv is now calling on Canada Soccer to have a friendly match with Ukraine's soccer team instead.

"And 400K could go for humanitarian needs of Ukrainians affected by Russia's war," wrote Kovaliv. "I guess it's win-win."

The soccer organization was under mounting political pressure to call off the nearly sold-out match at BC Place.

Ralph Goodale, Canada's high commissioner to the U.K. and Canada's former special adviser on Flight PS752, tweeted Wednesday that Canada Soccer's behaviour is "repugnant" and "calls into question both the competence and values of the organization."

Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart also condemned the game. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said again earlier this week that he thought the game was "a bad idea" and distanced his government from the match and its funding.

Canada Soccer to pay Iran’s team $400K for controversial soccer match

Duration 2:05
There’s growing controversy around a planned exhibition match between the Canadian and Iranian soccer teams set for Vancouver for June. CBC News has reported that Canada Soccer will pay $400,000 to Iran’s soccer federation for the game — and that the head of Iran’s team attended a party with a man wanted by the FBI in relation to an alleged plot to kidnap international targets.

Conservative MPs Matt Jeneroux and Richard Martel called Canada Soccer's decision to invite and pay Iran's team "unacceptable."

"Hosting the Iranian national soccer team as victims of Flight PS752 are still suffering and seeking compensation is reprehensible and will only further serve to legitimize the Iranian regime," the MPs wrote in a media statement.

Victims' families also wrote letters to Public Safety Canada officials Tuesday raising concerns about their own security. The Canadian Security Intelligence Service says victims' families have reported being harassed, threatened and intimidated by proxies of the IRGC.

Experts say politics and sports in Iran are intertwined, with the IRGC either directly or indirectly controlling many sports organizations, including soccer clubs.

As CBC News first reported, photos taken last month show the head of Iran's soccer team, Hamid Estili, attending a party with an alleged Iranian intelligence informant with ties to the IRGC who is wanted by the FBI.

At the time of the party, a warrant had been out in the U.S. for Mahmoud Khazein's arrest for almost a year. He was being sought on charges related to a plot to kidnap international targets, including three people in Canada. The FBI is now looking into the matter, according to a person at the centre of the alleged kidnapping scheme.

Estili has not responded to CBC's request for comment, submitted last week on Instagram.

Longtime sports journalist and CBC News contributor John Molinaro said it appears Canada Soccer only viewed the game as a way for Team Canada to prepare for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and didn't consider the public relations fallout.

Iran is ranked 21st in the FIFA men's world rankings. Canada is ranked 38th.

Esmaeilion said that he now wants the federal government to put the entire IRGC on its list of terrorist organizations, as the U.S. has done. Right now, only a clandestine branch of the IRGC is listed as a terrorist entity in Canada.

Blues' head coach Craig Berube addresses Nazem Kadri threats: 'It's not a good thing' - The Athletic

St. Louis Blues head coach Craig Berube denounced social media threats made toward Colorado Avalanche forward Nazem Kadri Wednesday, days after the coach said he had 'no comment' when he was first asked about them Monday.

"I’m not on social media. I was aware of a threat made to Nazem, not the racist stuff," Berube told the media Wednesday. "In no way is it acceptable by the St. Louis Blues or anybody else for him to have to go through that. Being a Native American myself, I’ve heard it all, I’ve been around it.

"It’s not a good thing. So I just wanted to get that out there that there’s no room for it anywhere."

Kadri was subjected to racist comments and threats on social media following a collision with Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington during Game 3 of the Blues-Avalanche second-round series. Following the game, Binnington threw a water bottle at Kadri as the Avs forward was being interviewed by TNT.

In Game 4, Kadri scored a hat-trick en route to a 6-3 Avalanche win over the Blues. Colorado can eliminate St. Louis Wednesday night in Game 5 with a victory.

Blue Jays’ bats finally come alive vs. Cardinals: ‘Everybody needed this day’ - Sportsnet.ca

ST. LOUIS – On Shakespeare night at Busch Stadium, the Blue Jays enjoyed a game entirely free of drama. They pitched well. They fielded well. They hit well. They won.

It wouldn’t have made for much of a play, but as baseball games go? Tuesday night’s 8-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals was exactly what the Blue Jays needed given their recent struggles at the plate.

“Everybody needed this day,” manager Charlie Montoyo said. “It was great to see the offence come alive.”

“It’s been pretty quiet in there lately,” added starter Kevin Gausman. “For us to get our mojo back, have that high energy, everybody talking in the dugout was nice to see ‘cause that’s what we are normally.”

While the return of the offence was easily the biggest development here, the Blue Jays’ starting pitcher was as effective as ever. Gausman continued pitching like an ace, working his way through six scoreless innings with apparent ease, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out eight.

He generated 23 swinging strikes while throwing a season-high 105 pitches. At night’s end, he led the American League in innings pitched (56) and WAR (2.4 and counting).

But by now, we’ve come to expect that from Gausman, whose fastball-splitter combination has eluded opposing hitters all season. More noteworthy was the offensive breakout of a Blue Jays team that began the day hitting an abysmal .209/.286/.318 in May.

“We’ve had to face 100 (m.p.h.) the last four days, so if the guys are kind of hanging a bit, I could understand,” Gausman said. “But as this team gets going, I think you’ll see it’s deep. Any one of these guys could hit a home run at any given moment. It was nice to see a little bit of that tonight.”

Danny Jansen homered twice and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. added a no-doubt, 438-foot homer of his own as the Blue Jays combined for 12 hits on their way to their biggest offensive outburst in weeks. Bo Bichette and Alejandro Kirk each had multi-hit games while George Springer and Matt Chapman each walked twice as the Blue Jays improved to 23-20.

For a team that had been struggling to convert with runners on base, this outburst did more than assure the Blue Jays of a series split. It may also take some pressure off a group of hitters that had been straining for results with little to show for their efforts.

“Everybody’s pressing at the same time,” Montoyo said before the game. “When your team’s pressing, everyone tries harder and even more with men in scoring position. That’s what’s going on right now with us, but it takes one guy to get hot and we’ll go from there.”

Maybe that hitter will be Jansen, who now has five home runs in just 11 games this year thanks in part to his pull-power approach. He pulled both home runs Tuesday, including a three-run shot in the fourth inning that hit the left-field foul pole.

“It’s my strength and it’s always been my strength,” Jansen said. “Now I’m trying to go up there and maximize that and look for pitches to use that. It’s been great for me.”

It was also significant for Guerrero Jr. to add a home run given that he had a .641 OPS in May entering play Tuesday. Right before he went deep, he told Montoyo he was starting to feel locked in.

“I’ve been working really hard and I feel like the more I work, the better I’ve been feeling,” Guerrero Jr. said through interpreter Hector Lebron. “That’s what I meant when I told Charlie that.”

Considering a matchup with Shohei Ohtani awaits in Anaheim on Thursday, this was an ideal time for the team to break out from its slump. But Guerrero Jr. said facing Ohtani, who beat him for last year’s American League MVP award, is nothing new.

“We know Ohtani’s one of the best, but I faced him last year, so it’s kind of normal for me,” he said.

Thanks to the offensive outburst, the Blue Jays were able to get by with just three pitchers Tuesday on a night Adam Cimber and David Phelps were believed to be unavailable. After Gausman’s exit, Ross Stripling pitched two innings and Andrew Vazquez pitched one, saving the rest of the bullpen for the Angels series.

Most important of all, though, the Blue Jays’ struggling offence finally looked like the group that led the American League in home runs and OPS a year ago. The talent’s always been there, and for one night at least, the results started to follow.

“Hitting’s contagious,” Jansen said. “It always is.”

Or, as Shakespeare put it in Hamlet: “A hit, a very palpable hit!”

NHL fines David Perron $5K for cross-checking Nazem Kadri in Game 4 - Sportsnet.ca

The NHL has fined St. Louis Blues forward David Perron $5,000 for cross-checking Colorado Avalanche forward Nazem Kadri, the league said Tuesday.

The incident took place in the second period of Game 4. After Kadri landed a hit on Perron near the Blues bench, Pavel Buchnevich, another St. Louis player, took exception to the exchange and cross-checked Kadri down to the ice. As Kadri attempted to get up, Perron lunged forward, sent another cross-check into Kadri from behind, and proceeded to pile on top of him as the referees attempted to break up the scrum.

Buchnevich was given a two-minute penalty for roughing, while Perron was assessed a minor penalty for cross-checking.

"We were just trying to create a spark," Perron said, when asked about his actions. "We need more fight in our group. We need more guys, I think, just creating a spark or whatever is required during the game."

The Avalanche failed to capitalize on the ensuing 5-on-3 power play, but Kadri notched his second of the game shortly after, making the score an insurmountable 4-1.

As he found the back of the net, Perron took another run at Kadri, this time narrowly missing him with an elbow.

"Lose your cool, and we'll make you pay," the Avalanche star said after the game.

The altercation Perron initiated marked a dangerous moment in a series that has increasingly revolved around Kadri — for his on-ice brilliance, and for what he has endured away from the rink.

In the wake of colliding with Jordan Binnington in Game 3 on Saturday, which injured the Blues goaltender and ruled him out for the series, someone threw a water bottle at Kadri during a TV interview. Kadri has since said he thinks it was Binnington.

Since the collision and subsequent water bottle incident, Kadri has been subjected to numerous threats and callous comments on social media.

The NHL said it was investigating threats made toward Kadri on Monday and the St. Louis Police employed enhanced security procedures at Kadri’s hotel and the Blues’ arena ahead of Game 4.

On Tuesday, Kadri’s wife, Ashley, took to Instagram to share screenshots of racist messages he and his family had received over the past 48 hours, calling the collection of messages “just a small example” of the comments they’ve endured.

“Great game tonight, very proud of Nazem,” she wrote. “But I wanted to shine light on what the last 48 hours has looked like for us as a family.”

“This is just a small example. There are many more. This behaviour doesn’t belong in sports, or anywhere. If you are not condemning racism, then you are tolerating it,” she also pleaded.

Kadri himself has used his own platform to raise awareness.

“People need to be aware that this stuff still happens, and it’s hurtful,” he said following Monday’s game.

The NHLPA also released a statement on Tuesday condemning the hateful comments directed at Kadri and his family.

“The comments recently direct at Nazem Kadri online have no place in our society. Notwithstanding fans’ rooting interests during the highly competitive playoffs, such racist, hate-filled speech directed at anyone is completely unacceptable. Nazem and his family should never be subjected to the comments they have endured this week,” the association wrote.

Kadri maintains composure to will Avalanche past Blues amid intolerable situation - Sportsnet.ca

Nazem Kadri didn’t appreciate what Craig Berube had to say about his reputation, so he did something to enhance it.

And for good reason, Kadri didn’t appreciate some of the repulsive, hateful and unacceptable racist remarks that came his way in the hours after his collision with Jordan Binnington.

But instead of coming unglued or being distracted by something no person should ever have to go through, the Colorado Avalanche centre came up with a game for the ages and essentially willed his team to victory in a pivotal game in this Central Division final with the St. Louis Blues.

Not only did Kadri notch his first career Stanley Cup playoff hat trick, but he chipped in an assist for good measure and was the best player on the ice as the Avalanche secured a 6-3 victory and took a commanding 3-1 in this best-of-seven series, which shifts back to Denver on Wednesday night.

As much as he impacted the game, that Kadri was able to keep his composure on the ice and afterward when he stepped to the podium to speak with reporters about the incident speaks volumes about his ability to deal with what could have easily been an intolerable situation.

Not many people could be expected to stay calm under these conditions, yet there was Kadri, speaking openly about trying to use the negative energy as fuel.

“I wanted to come out and really put a mark on this game, especially after what happened. I tried to do that as best as possible,” said Kadri. “Sometimes you’ve got to be patient and you’ve got to wait. I was able to strike early in the second period and was able to get the mojo going, in terms of individually and as a team, so it felt amazing. Especially to do it on the road, it was pure.

“I guess I needed some fuel. I was pretty upset for the last couple of days, but it is what it is. We got the win and that’s what we wanted.”

Kadri let it be known how much he appreciated the support of his teammates and others who have reached out, even if they couldn’t possibly have a clue about what it’s like to receive hateful messages and then simply brush them off, play in this pressure cooker and not merely survive but thrive.

He made a point of saying he knew these messages - as extreme as they were - didn’t represent the entire Blues fan base.

“I know that they’re booing me and what-not, but that’s what being a fan is. As a home team and a home player, you want the fans on your side and heckling the other team, as long as it's within the guidelines,” said Kadri. “I’ve got no issues with that and I know what was said isn’t a reflection on every single fan in St. Louis. I understand that and I want to make that clear. But for those that wasted their time sending messages like that, I feel sorry for them.”

On Sunday afternoon, the Avalanche let it be known that the St. Louis police department got involved after Kadri received threats.

“I guess someone had contacted them about some hateful messages and I was able to read those messages and they were very extreme,” said Kadri. “So, you know, I just tried to shake it off. They did a good job of assuring me and making me feel safe. I just had to worry about coming (to the rink) and showing up.”

What about the contents of those messages?

“Racial. Threatening,” said Kadri. “All of that good stuff.”

Kadri also knew that there were probably going to be a few members of the Blues who took a run or a swing at him, perhaps be on the receiving end of a cross-check or two.

All of those things came to fruition, but Kadri didn’t shy away and retreat to the shadows.

He absorbed each and every one of those blows, including a cross-check from Pavel Bucnevich and another cross-check and several punches to the face from David Perron as they fell to the ice together during one heated post-whistle exchange.

Instead of retaliating, Kadri picked himself up off the ice and skated to the bench. When his turn came to jump back over the boards, he delivered his second goal of the game.

While the one-timer came seven seconds after those minor penalties expired, it proved to be the eventual game-winner.

“I mean, I figured someone was going to have something to say, but that’s just stupid penalties that we cashed in on and it hurt them,” said Kadri. “If you lose your cool, we’ll make you pay.”

Amid the celebration, Kadri also had the awareness to avoid a potential elbow from Perron, who appeared to be on the lookout for some revenge.

When Kadri beat Blues goalie Ville Husso with a shot just before the midway point of the third period, he conceded that it felt “amazing” and you could understand why.

For all of the compartmentalizing he had to do, Berube’s comment about his reputation being a factor in the collision with Blues defenceman Calle Rosen and Binnington, who is lost for at least the remainder of the series with a knee injury, bothered and also motivated Kadri.

“I don’t know. You know, starting with their head coach probably. He made some comments that I wasn’t a fan of,” said Kadri. “I guess he’s never heard of bulletin-board material. I don’t know what that was about. But like I said, there were a lot of people saying a lot of things. I’ve got to tune it out. I’ll step up when I have to.”

After the Blues said all of the right things about turning the page and not seeking retribution leading up to Game 4, their actions suggest otherwise and it’s one of the reasons they find themselves on the brink of elimination.

Kadri wasn’t about to be bullied on or off the ice and thanks to his courageous performance, the Avalanche are one win away from advancing to the Western Conference final.

“For humanity, is this a perfect example of good defeating evil in a way,” Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar told reporters. “With what happened, Naz has a job to do and to be able to stay focused and to be able to perform like that under the circumstances, I thought, showed a lot of character and a lot of resolve and he's an awesome guy and tough kid and he elevated his game at the best time to kind of show everyone what he's made of.

“It's not about ego. It's not about settling scores, as tough as that would have been for him. It's about winning. you have to make sacrifices and you have to … in order to win hockey games, you have to do it. And it's no different than any other situation where a guy gets a lick on you. We're not settling scores. It's about winning the hockey game. And I think that's what makes the biggest statement, you go out and you win the game and you suck it up and do what you got to do to help everyone else in the room get what they want, which is a win. And no one wants it more than Naz.”

Kadri is up to five goals and 10 points in eight games and has been a dominant force so far in the series, picking up some of the offensive slack at a time several of his teammates still have another level to each.

But that’s what good teams do, they pull together and pick each other up, especially when times are tough, either for an individual or the team as a whole.

“I think we always have each other's backs, but when stuff like that happens Naz knew that, you know, we are with him and the organization was with him,” said Avalanche defenceman Erik Johnson, who scored the equalizer after the Blues got on the board first for the fourth time in this series. “It was awesome. I felt so good for him. Imagine being in his situation, it can't be a fun thing. No, no human being should actually receive that type of treatment, especially with a hockey game. It's just insane. And that being said, I think he liked being the villain and he certainly stepped up for us.

“You're not going to be fueled more to try and win a game just because of that, we have enough fuel. But that being said, I think it definitely helped motivate Naz a little bit and I mean, how could you script it any better for him?”

The only way the script could have been better is if Kadri didn’t have to deal with any of the messages and threats at all.

But being a beacon of light under difficult circumstances is part of the example Kadri set by handling the situation with such grace.

“It’s a good message, I think. People need to be aware that this still happens and it’s hurtful. It’s hurtful,” said Kadri. “I know a lot of people don’t have to deal with that and they might not understand what it feels like, but people are trying (to understand). Which I appreciate.

“At the end of the day, I’m a good hockey player and I just try to provide for my team and try to put all of that aside. I just worry about some people - and maybe some kids - that aren’t as mentally tough as I am and have to kind of go through that scrutiny and that criticism. So I want to do the best that I can to help.”

Heat vs Celtics Game 4 picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Spread analysis

Miami’s valiant second-half effort vs. the Celtics in Game 3 held off a surge from the home side, which closed a 26-point gap on the scoreboard to put a scare in the Heat down the stretch Saturday. Boston started the game a dismal 15-for-35 from the field (3 of 12 on 3-pointers) with 11 turnovers in the first half.

While the absence of Butler certainly helped the Celtics’ second-half chances, this team was too good to struggle like it did in the opening 24 minutes. Boston bounced back by shooting better than 54% from the floor in the final two frames along with nine makes on 12 attempts from beyond the arc.

That’s where the C’s pick up in Game 4 — Butler or no Butler.

Due to careless passing and sloppy play, Boston coughed the ball up 24 times in Game 3, and Miami quickly exchanged those mistakes for 33 points. Those errors also prevented the Celtics from finding any flow or rhythm offensively until late in the fourth.

They were averaging only 13.2 turnovers per game in the postseason before Saturday’s slopfest and even if they clean up their play in Game 4 to that average, that’s a little over 18 points off turnovers in the pocket of Miami — an improvement that would have made the difference in Game 3.

The current line seems a little protective of Butler’s health. Game 3 opened with Boston as low as -5.5 at home and jumped to as high as -6.5 before late money on Miami slimmed the closing line back at Celtics -5.5. But it’s not just Butler that Miami backers have to worry about for Game 4.

Super-sub and Sixth Man of the Year Tyler Herro suffered a quad injury on Saturday and was held out of the fourth quarter, leaving his status for Monday up in the air as well.

Purely speculating and not taking anything away from Miami’s efforts, but the Heat likely entered these two games in Boston with the realistic goal of stealing back at least one victory in the Garden, turning this into a best-of-three series with home court in Games 5 and 7. Mission accomplished.

This is a playoff-savvy team and rather than risk losing Butler and potentially Herro for the championship rounds of this series, the Heat could go safe in Game 4 and rest those key talents in order to better position themselves for what really feels like a seven-game slog.

I’m jumping on Boston as low as I can right now, trying to stay ahead of any injury updates that could boost this padded line any further. Keep a close eye on the line movement between now and tipoff, as the market often knows who’s in and out before the media reports on it.

Prediction: Celtics -6.5 (-110 at bet365)

Over/Under analysis

Bookies have been packing on the points since pegging Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals with an ultra-low total of 203.5 — a number the Celtics and Heat blew out of the water by a combined 21.5 points.

The Game 3 total closed at 208 points and Over bettors needed some late buckets — uncontested dunk and a desperation triple — in the final 20 seconds of the fourth quarter to get over the hump, making the Over a perfect 3-0 in this series so far.

The Game 4 number opened 208.5 points and will likely dip significantly if Butler or Herro (or both) sit out Monday. That pair has combined for almost 39% of the Heat’s total offensive output this postseason. Miami has some capable bodies in backup spots, like Victor Oladipo and Gabe Vincent, but Boston doesn't need to take account for those guys like it does when Butler and Herro are on the floor.

As for the Celtics’ attack, it needs to be more protective of the basketball after turnovers turned the tide of this series Saturday. Those errors gift wrapped more than 30 points for Miami, which had picked up an average of 17 points off turnovers in the first two games of the series.

The old philosophy of “fake it before you make it” will apply to all of Boston’s passes Monday night after the Heat recorded an incredible 19 steals in Game 3, so expect the Celtics' offense to use up a little more shot clock and play with better focus.

We'll go Under trying to get out ahead of a total that could shrink quickly. As with the spread, keep a close eye on total movement if you want to wait on more concrete info around Miami's injuries.

Prediction: Under 208.5 (-110 at PointsBet)

Best bet

If the Heat are potentially happy with stealing that road win and escaping Boston with no further damage done to its dinged-up stars, then we’ll likely know by halftime.

Boston will undoubtedly come out swinging on its home court, knowing how close it came to completing the comeback in Game 3. Despite being down 15 points at the halftime break Saturday, the Celtics are still the top first-half team in the postseason with an advanced net rating of +8.9.

The moneyline is a pricy option at -275 and will only get more expensive should Miami rest those injured stars, so we’ll instead look to the double result – 1H/full game line – for added value with minimal risk, considering how the opening 24 minutes could shake out.

Pick: Celtics double result (-135 at bet365)
